If I had to I would put myself right beside you
So let me ask you
Would ya like that? Would ya like that?
And I don't mind If you say this love is the last time
So now I'll ask
Do ya like that? Do ya like that? No

Something's getting in the way
Something's just about to break
I will try to find my place
In the diary of Jane
So, tell me
How it should be

Try to find out
What makes you tick as I lie down
Sore and sick
Do ya like that? Do ya like that?
There's a fine line between love and hate
And I don't mind, just let me say
That I like that, I like that

Something's getting in the way
Something's just about to break
I will try to find my place
In the diary of Jane
As I burn another page
As I look the other way
I still try to find my place
In the diary of Jane
So tell me
How it should be

Desperate, I will crawl
Waiting for so long
No love, there's no love
Die for anyone
What have I become?

Something's getting in the way
Something's just about to break
I will try to find my place
In the diary of Jane
As I burn another page
As I look the other way
I still try to find my place
In the diary of Jane

Alright, well this song to me is talking about this guys past relationship with his girlfriend.

If I had to I would put myself right beside you So let me ask Would you like that? Would you like that?

((He's saying that he is willing to change everything about him and be just like this person and is asking if that would be good enough for this person.))

And I don't mind if you say this love is the last time and now I'll ask Do you like that? Do you like that? No

((He's saying that he doesn't mind if this is his last love or chance. And he's asking if the person likes that. And the answer is no.. so he goes on to the next verse to explain why))

Something's getting in the way Something's just about to break I will try to find my place in the Diary of Jane So tell me how it should be

((Something messed it up and he knows it, yet he's still trying to be everything this person has ever wanted in someone.. Diary of jane refers to this girls "perfect person".. and thats what he strives so hard to be))

Try to find out What makes you tick as I lie down Sore and sick Do you like that? Do you like that?

((He's exhausted from trying so hard to find out what is making her hate him so bad.. and again asking if she likes what he's doing yet..))

There's a fine line Between love and hate And I don't mind So let me say that I like that I like that

((He's slowly realizing that he doesn't have to try soo hard for this person and is more focused on his own happiness))

Something's getting in the way Something's just about to break I will try to find my place In the Diary of Jane

((again, something is always screwing up and he's still trying to be everything that she's ever wanted.))

As I burn another page As I look the other way I still try to find my place In the Diary of Jane So tell me how it should be

((Now this is where it shifts. "as I burn another page, As i look the other way" refers to the fact that he's given up plenty of times.. but when it's continued with "I still try to find my place.." It shows he's still willing to do anything for her.))

Desperate I will crawl Waiting for so long No love, There is no love Die for anyone What have I become? ((He's saying that no matter if he is shoved down, he'll crawl to her. And that he's been waiting so long that he doesn't want to give up. He's also realizing that he's sacrificed everyone for someone who has "killed" him..))

Something's getting in the way Something's just about to break I will try to find my place In the Diary of Jane As I burn another page As I look the other way I still try to find my place In the Diary of Jane

((all in all. Even though this whole experience has killed him.. he's still willing to do whatever and be whatever for this girl.))

    My Opinion

I think this song is about someone who becomes obsessed with another person who is either not aware or not available in any sense. And the obsessed person goes through extraordinary pain and frustration because of this obsession.

It's typical for an obsessed person to rationalize why their dream can't come to fruition, "Something's getting in the way, something's just about to break" are things obsessed people tell themselves to keep the fantasy going. You don't see the obvious red flags telling you things are not as you think they are, instead you "look the other way" and tend to deny any reality that threatens your obsession (burn another page).

Interestingly enough, there is a website janedoe.org that deals with crime of stalking, why it's dangerous behavior and what you can do about it.

Of course they never really do get closer to the object of their desire because subconsciously they can't. The person they think they see isn't real but wears the form of their fantasy. Confronting reality would destroy the fantasy and the obsessed person can't generally handle that. That's why some stalkers end up killing their victims.

I never killed anyone but I know what it's like to be obsessed and how it consumed my life. Whenever you try to find your identity in another human being you run this risk. You think you would do anything or be anything to have that person's affection but you don't know the real person. You are "in love" with someone you made up and gave their face to a very real person who is probably nothing like your dream. One of the hardest things in the world to face is the realization that you spent so much time, energy, tears, agony over someone who was never real in the first place.

I don't think this song is about trying to get closer to the girl. I think he is trying to get away from her. He says, "If I HAD to, I'd put myself right beside you." He doesn't mind if this love is the last time. He's burning the pages in Jane's diary... He's trying to leave her behind.

Just my opinion. I love the song though. I also see how people can take it as him wanting to get closer, but that's not how I see it.

    My Interpretation

Without looking at the other comments so they don't influence my opinion (they usually end up doing that in some way or another) I think the dude has a crush on a girl, and he wants to make it into her diary. Basically, he wants to stand out to her so she at least thinks about him. "Something's getting in the way," might be another guy, especially since she says, "this love is the last time."

Awesome single. Anyway, I think it's about him trying to get a girl's attention ("find my place in the diary of Jane") without her noticing he's intentionally doing it ("as I look the other way", to make sure she's not watching). He's constantly trying to figure out what he can do ("find out what makes you tick") and it's constantly dominating his mind (he's "sick") while he does other things ("as I lie down"). He constantly feels that the next time will be the time ("something's just about to break") for better or worse, but it ends up not happening. He wants to remove others from her attention ("burn another page") so he can be there. It keeps going ("waiting for so long") to win someone he really doesn't know much about (who could be "anyone") and he's ashamed of that ("what have I become?"). Great song, even if the meaning is a bit shallow (some pun intended).

    Memory

I was driving to class one night while listening to this song's acoustic version on their CD and it hit me. i burst into tears as I heard the lyrics on a deeper meaning. There's a girl i've been 'in love' with for years and she just doesn't have the feelings for me. If I had to, i would put myself right beside her. but i know she wouldn't like that. "as I lie down, sore and sick" is how i would try so hard just to get her to give me a chance, to see the real me, and knowing i've failed i would lay in my bed sick to my stomach "there's a fine line between love and hate" i would get angry becasue of her unrequited love and hate her for a week or so, then be back to loving her. "I still try to find my place in the diary of jane" i got to the point where I could accept she didn't want me as her lover but I needed to find my place in her life. "something's getting in the way, something's just about to break" i'd always feel like maybe tonight she'd give in and just give me a chance, hopefully let me into her heart, but there was always something in the way. "desperate I will crawl, waiting for so long" i've been 'in love' with her for years, and it seems like the only progress i make is a desperate crawl "die for anyone, what have i become" this is the line thaat hit me like a ton of bricks. i still cry now when I hear these words. for most of my senior year i highschool i would pray something horrible would happen, like a terrorist came into my class with a gun. I wanted to confront the gunman, and either save the day and be a hero so she'd notice me, or die to end the suffering and misery of my life. I would never commit suicide, i feel it is a signof weakness and i'm not weak. I'd wish for a way to die without killing myself because the pain of not being with the only person i wanted was overwelming me. when I heard these lyrics i realized i've become someone i didn't wish to be. i asked myself "Die for anyone, what have i become?" The irony is, this girl's name is jane(elle) :) right now, I've been able to accept not being equally loved and for the first time in a long, long time, i can be her friend and talk to her without getting sick to my stomach, angry, sad, or crying. even as I date other women, i still have feelinga for Janelle, and i try to find my place in the diary of Jane(elle)

It is totally about a condition that a lot of people get when they put too much of themselves into a relationship called Co-Dependency. He just loves her so much that he is willing to put anything and everything into it for her, and yet, something keeps his efforts from making any difference. That something is her because she doesn't love him as much as he loves her. What ends up happening is he gets in a pattern of putting all of himself into a relationship, thus the "die for anyone, what have I become?" line. That's just my interpretation though. and although it is TOTALLY cliche, i really do like the accoustic version better than the full band version. It just caters to the lyrics so much better

    I absolutely love this song.

I believe that the lyrics are about a guy who is in love with a girl who has died. The first line...If I had to, I would put myself right beside you...sounds to me like he is considering killing himself to be with her in the afterlife...put himself right beside her in the graveyard. If you see in the video, he is visiting her grave in the beginning of the song and the end.

I think what is driving him mad is that he knows that Jane didn't love him during her life. He tries to fool himself by 'looking the other way' and burning the pages of the diary that are not about him, but there's a fine line between love & hate, meaning that when he allows himself to see that she didn't love him, he hates her.

When he realizes that he is thinking about killing himself to be with the one he loves (even though she doesn't love him), he starts wondering what he has become, contemplating killing himself for someone who does not think he is special.

"No love, There is no love Die for anyone What have I become?"

That's what the song means to me...very powerful lyrics. Amazing song...Amazing band.

i think its a wonderful song. if youve heard the acoustic version. it gives you chills. its NOT AT ALL what you expect it to be. and its more clear.. he likes the girl. the girl doesnt like him in the same way. and he wants her to feel something. and she doesnt even try to. and he wants to feel like he is wanted.. he wants to be apart of her (in her diary) but she denies him..

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."

I Can't Go To Sleep
Wu-Tang Clan
This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

Magical
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
