Hold it together, birds of a feather
Nothing but lies and crooked wings
I have the answer, spreading the cancer
You are the faith inside me

No, don't
Leave me to die here
Help me survive here
Alone, don't remember, remember

Put me to sleep, evil angel
Open your wings, evil angel

A-ah

I'm a believer
Nothing could be worse
All these imaginary friends
Hiding betrayal
Driving the nail
Hoping to find a savior

No, don't
Leave me to die here
Help me survive here
Alone, don't
Surrender, surrender

Put me to sleep, evil angel
Open your wings, evil angel

Oh
Fly over me, evil angel
Why can't I breathe, evil angel?

Put me to sleep, evil angel
Open your wings, evil angel

Oh
Fly over me, evil angel
Why can't I breathe, evil angel?

I don't think this song has anything to do with religion... I think it's about what most songs these days are about: "love"

I think it's over a girl he can't get for some reason

"Hold it together, birds of a feather Nothing but lies and crooked wings I have the answer, spreading the cancer You are the faith inside me"

-He's gotta keep his cool but he doesn't know for how long because bird feathers stay in but fall out sooner or later. -The lies and crooked wings are either she's telling him "I want to be with you" or his friends or his mind is telling him "You can get her" -He knows he can't get her (that's the answer) and it's spreading like cancer in him. But even though he knows he can't have her, just being with her makes him happy, thus, she is his faith.

"No, don't leave me to die here Help me survive here Alone, don't remember, remember"

-They have to depart and when he's not with her, he likes sad and dead. To help him survive, he needs her. He wants her to remember the happiness they share together.

"Put me to sleep, evil angel Open your wings, evil angel"

-If he can't be with her at the moment, his only escape is sleep so he wants her to put him to sleep. "Open your wings" refers to "open your heart" and let him in.

"I'm a believer, nothing could be worse All these imaginary friends Hiding betrayal, driving the nail Hopeing to find a savior"

-Like I said before, he knows he can't have her but there is always that little part of us that believes and he is a believer he can get her and that hope is the worst. -"All these imaginary friends" has to deal with the voices in him telling him what to do, or say or how to act around her. -"Hiding betrayal, driving the nail" is the way he's betraying himself to think he can have her when he really can't and the nail is the growing pain of his longing. -"Hopeing to find a savior" to help him through this longing.

"Fly over me, evil angel Why can't I breathe, evil angel" -He sees her as an angel (evil because she is a constant reminder of what he doesn't have) and it's a blessing when angels fly over you. -"Why can't I breathe, evil angel" Either she told him "we can't be together" or "I don't like you like that" has caused him to not breathe or have sudden shock.

    My Interpretation

Here is my humble and probably completely incorrect interpretation:

"Hold it together. Birds of a feather. Nothing but lies and crooked wings."

This verse sets the scene. The main character is struggling with the world around them. Through all of the lies and the evil that surrounds them, they find a soul mate or a kindred spirit.

"I have the answer. Spreading the cancer. You are the faith inside me."

The kindred spirit insists that they are not good for the main character. The main character will hear none of it, however, believing that the kindred spirit is a savior, of sorts. They are the main character's tie to sanity.

"No, don't leave me to die here. Help me survive here alone. Don't remember. Remember."

The kindred spirit now must leave. The main character doesn't want them to, thinking they they won't be able to survive without them. The kindred spirit wants the main character to forget all of their shared experiences and move on, and the main character at the same time urges the kindred spirit to remember those experiences in an attempt to make them stay.

"Put me to sleep evil angel. Open your wings evil angel."

The main character wants the kindred spirit to return, to use their influence over them to make their life dreamlike with happiness again.

"I'm a believer, nothing could be worse. All these imaginary friends Hiding betrayal, Driving the nail, Hoping to find a savior."

The main character still believes that the kindred spirit will one day return to them. That belief could not be worse for their mental health. The other friends that the main character thought they had are keeping things from them and doing other things to drive the nail of insanity and/or depression deeper and deeper into their heart. Those other friends ignore the main character's problems and still expect help with their own.

"Put me to sleep, evil angel. Open your wings, evil angel. Fly over me, evil angel. Why can't I breathe, evil angel?"

Again, the main character desperately longs for the return of the kindred spirit. Even a mere glance would suffice. The main character finds the aloneness and misery brought on by the kindred spirit's absence so hard to bear that they can hardly breathe.

I hope I wasn't too far off the mark! This is my first song interpretation on this site, so I won't be overly surprised if I am.

Oh and, "Put me to sleep, evil angel" could be them asking the "Savior" to end their life,

"Open your wings, evil angel Fly over me, evil angel" Could be the "Savior" showing only the Angel part of them then "Flying" right over the other person showing how evil they really are,

"Why can't I breathe, evil angel" Is the person asking why it hurts so much as they watched their "Savior" walk by them in their time of need.

I think this song is about religious people and that the person telling the story is dying and finally realizing that believing in religion was a total waste of time.

Hold it together, birds of a feather ~Those who believe the same flock together

Nothing but lies and crooked wings ~The whole religious experience is nothing but lies and deception

I have the answer, spreading the cancer ~I now know it was all lies and it's spreading through my beliefs like cancer, causing me to lose my faith.

You are the faith inside me ~Evil Angel (Bad religion) you are the faith inside of me.

No, don't leave me to die here ~I'm dying. Why isn't my "god" helping me now?

Help me survive here ~Help me survive, god!

Alone, don't remember, remember ~I'm alone now. I don't remember how to live without faith.

Put me to sleep, evil angel ~Kill me, god.

Open your wings, evil angel ~Take me, god.

I'm a believer, nothing could be worse ~I'm a believer and now I see it was a sham. Nothing could be worse.

All these imaginary friends ~All the things I believed were imaginary.

Hiding betrayal, driving the nail ~Religion hides the betrayal they do to others. They lie, cheat and steal to increase their power which drives finally makes believers snap and give up on religion.

Hoping to find a savior ~Hoping to find the real truth

No, don't, leave me to die here ~Don't leave me when I need you the most.

Help me survive here ~Don't let me die.

Alone, don't surrender, surrender ~I can't give up now that I'm alone.

Put me to sleep, evil angel ~Kill me, god.

Open your wings, evil angel ~Take me, god.

Fly over me, evil angel ~Kill me.

Why can't I breathe, evil angel ~Why are you letting me die? You said you'd save me!

Put me to sleep, evil angel Open your wings, evil angel Fly over me, evil angel Why can't I breathe, evil angel ~(Same as above)

this is one of their best songs... sounds to me like two people one of whom has some creepy holod over the other but they stay together even though they're always hurting eacvh other and being bad for each other cos they keep loving each other no matter what my first explanation is magic demon powers but i realise that breaking benjamin probably didn't write the song about that

This is one of those songs that just, for me, is a mystery. I can't really picture BB doing a religious based song, but I could be wrong. It seems to me that a big majority of their songs tend to be about relationships (mostly bad ones; these guys aren't the band to listen to when you want to be cheered up) I'd say there's a fair shot that this song has something to do with that. Truly though, at least for me, this song is way out in left field as far as a concise meaning.

"Hold it together, birds of a feather" Like many poets, this line is a call to anyone that can relate to what he's saying.

"Nothing but lies and crooked wings I have the answer, spreading the cancer" That sounds like a mistrust in people that claim a "holy" path, but live more evil than non-believers. His answer is something that even he feels will be taken like poison.

"You are the faith inside me" this line is left vague enough for anyone to relate to. It's whatever he has found that gives him will to carry on.

"No, don't leave me to die here Help me survive here" The chorus speaks of putting his trust into that faith. To not do to him what already has been done, to not betray his trust.

"Alone, don't remember, remember" This piece of the chorus is a summary. He feels alone, and wishes to find comfort in that object that has given him faith. The contridiction of "don't remember, remember" must mean forget, but don't forget me. A feeling that many have. It's best that you forget me and go away, but I want you to remember.

"Put me to sleep, evil angel Open your wings, evil angel" This must be the greatest line in the song. The object of his faith, misunderstood, concidered "evil" by some or by him. He wishes for a familar comfort in the soothing he's recieved from, what by the populace would be, an "evil angel". Obviously, he has found "love" in that object and doesn't use the words in mallous.

"I'm a believer, nothing could be worse All these imaginary friends Hiding betrayal, driving the nail Hopeing to find a savior" This whole stanza is what many can relate to as being a "believer". A hopeless romantic, a person that thinks the world should be kinder, any person with a good heart... only to find so many others that are not of good intentions. His is a search for others like himself that can renew his faith in humanity.

"Fly over me, evil angel Why can't I breathe, evil angel" Another call to his faith, asking why things are so hard. With a longing for the comforts missing from his life, and the answers that nobody has been able to give him.

I think its interesting to see what people think of this song, and how for the most part we all think a little differently.

Some people take this song as a boy loves girl situation or a somewhat religious thing. I think people usualy interpret a song to relate to some kind of situation going on in their life at the time or in the past.

to me this song isnt so much of a boy and girl relationship. Though i think it describes a relationship in a sense.

I think the song to me describes a person who is going through a very hard time. Depression, being suicidal. He tries to hold it together, though the lies that surround his life try to bring him down. And he tries to escape from this in any way. "i have the answer, spreading the cancer...you are the faith inside me" This is the voice inside, or a means of escape telling him how to get away from this, and like a disease it spreads. The faith inside him is a voice of reason in a hurtful environment.

"No, dont leave me to die here, help me survive here, alone." He's listening to his voice of reason and asking it not to leave him because its all he has left. He needs it to survive alone.

"Put me to sleep, evil angel Open your wings, evil angel" - This is him telling this part of him to let him rest. Let him escape from his situation and put him to sleep, let this "evil angel" take over him.

The 2nd verse he says "i'm a believer, nothing could be worse, all these imaginary friends." He believes that having all this fake friends and people around him is the worst because they only further drag him down with betrayal and other things. This drives the nail. figuratively speaking, through him. and hes just hoping to find a savior, someone to help him break free. and to him that someone is this "evil angel"

When he says, "Fly over me, evil angel Why can't I breathe, evil angel" ib believe this is when he lets the evil angel take over him, later to find out it only hurts him even more. It, flies over him, covers him and smothers him until he cant breathe.

thats just one of my interpretations of the song though i could just be rambling on, who knows.

    My Interpretation

My interpretation of the song is that he's searching for someone to give him faith in love, but he's fallen for the wrong girl and she wants to leave him/has left him but he feels lost without her even though staying together might hurt him more.

Probably not the intended meaning, but it's how I've always heard it. Beautiful song, though.

Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.

Midnight

“Midnight” is a song about finding a love that is so true that it provides a calming feeling through every storm. Ed Sheeran reflects on his good fortunes in landing someone with such peace and support and speaks of not fearing the dark days because he knows they’ll all end in the safety nets of her arms. “Well, good morning there / What a way to start the day / With everything laid bare,” Ed Sheeran sings in the first verse, enthusiastic to be waking up beside his woman. He apologizes for missing her calls in the second verse and promises to return them because for him, speaking to her is the most important thing. “Well, I get lost inside my head / In this chaos, you’re my calm / And I will find my feet again / ‘Cause еven the worst days of my life will always еnd / At midnight in your arms,” sings Ed Sheeran in the chorus, revelling in his good luck.
