Anyway, I think it's about him trying to get a girl's attention ("find my place in the diary of Jane") without her noticing he's intentionally doing it ("as I look the other way", to make sure she's not watching). He's constantly trying to figure out what he can do ("find out what makes you tick") and it's constantly dominating his mind (he's "sick") while he does other things ("as I lie down"). He constantly feels that the next time will be the time ("something's just about to break") for better or worse, but it ends up not happening. He wants to remove others from her attention ("burn another page") so he can be there. It keeps going ("waiting for so long") to win someone he really doesn't know much about (who could be "anyone") and he's ashamed of that ("what have I become?"). Great song, even if the meaning is a bit shallow (some pun intended).
