I don't think this song is about trying to get closer to the girl. I think he is trying to get away from her. He says, "If I HAD to, I'd put myself right beside you." He doesn't mind if this love is the last time. He's burning the pages in Jane's diary... He's trying to leave her behind.
Just my opinion. I love the song though. I also see how people can take it as him wanting to get closer, but that's not how I see it.
