The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
You stay all in one piece when broken
Kind remarks, and your words soft-spoken
Driving far from the path of destruction
Coming ever so close to throwing it all away again
Is this all some great big lie?
Twisted and working on something deep down
That you should've never kept inside
How much must I live through just to get away?
(All this tension and so alive)
How much must I live through just to get away?
(All this pressure that makes your head feel so tired)
You've been through the worst encounters
Searching out the truth, the light, and way
You have thoughts of peace and silence
Coming ever so close to giving it all away again
Is this all some great big lie?
Sick and disturbing, you want no answers
But you should've never looked inside
How much must I live through just to get away?
(All this tension and so alive)
How much must I live through just to get away?
(All this pressure that makes your head feel so tired)
And sometimes it seems easier to burn it to the ground
Can we get away now?
Can we get away now?
Can we get away now?
please just let this go away
Kind remarks, and your words soft-spoken
Driving far from the path of destruction
Coming ever so close to throwing it all away again
Is this all some great big lie?
Twisted and working on something deep down
That you should've never kept inside
How much must I live through just to get away?
(All this tension and so alive)
How much must I live through just to get away?
(All this pressure that makes your head feel so tired)
You've been through the worst encounters
Searching out the truth, the light, and way
You have thoughts of peace and silence
Coming ever so close to giving it all away again
Is this all some great big lie?
Sick and disturbing, you want no answers
But you should've never looked inside
How much must I live through just to get away?
(All this tension and so alive)
How much must I live through just to get away?
(All this pressure that makes your head feel so tired)
And sometimes it seems easier to burn it to the ground
Can we get away now?
Can we get away now?
Can we get away now?
please just let this go away

In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988.
"'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it."
"There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
Magical
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.
Is it just me, or does Earshot sound heavilly influenced by Tool. I mean, when the singer goes into the chorus of "How much must I live through just to get away?" he sounds VERY similar to Maynard that its just scary. Overall a good song, Earshot has some serious potential.
GREAT SONG!!
this guy is actually pretty sexy.. and cant beat the song its awesome
I don't think that Earshot sounds like Tool, except for the fact that the lead singer may have a voice somewhat like Maynards. Earshot is a great band and has its own sound that is intense and very pleasing to listen to. Earshot is awesome and should not be recognized as the band that is trying to imitate Tool, but known as a band with their own unique sound.
ahh!I love this band!I was lucky enough to see 'em with Glassjaw, Adema, and AAF when they had a concert here. They were the first act and OMG!They're GREAT live!! This band is going to become somethin' great, even more then they are.
I've been obsessed with them since I first heard Get Away by accidentally downloading it quite a while ago. His voice is so.. - err...anyway.. back to the subject! this band kicks A$$.. and they are gonna rule ( no my poor Wil does NOT sound like maynard.. :P )
Avatara is right. The singers voice sounds much like Maynrds. And they do sound heavily influenced by Tool.
Omg! I Love this song so much.. And a agree, too. I'm so glad I asked my friend to give me songs lol.
I would like to say that earshot really kicks a$$, and that you can't deny the fact that the lead singer does sound like maynard from tool, but I really don't think that earshot is influenced by tool. The lyrics of earshot compared to tool are nothing alike. So if earshot was trying to be a tool rip off, than their lyrics would have to be similar to tools. I think that earshot is a great band and will continue to produce good music.
Well, yes, "Get Away" sounds almost exactly like Tool, and Wil does sound like Maynard, but the rest of the album sounds very little like Tool. Some of the songs on the album are a little boring and repetitive, but for a first time effort it is great. I hope they improve so that we can look forward to their next album.
