Words so secure screaming like an alarm
Are you trying to wake me up
Now what was that you were trying to pull
Is it my arm
I do believe you're trying to wake me up

But could it be maybe
It's not me sleeping
Could it be maybe you awakening

Sleep this time tonight
Sleepwalk in the light
Sleep this time tonight (one day we'll)
Sleepwalk out of sight

Now here I am, but I'm just sleepwalking
Yes here I stand
But I guess I'm just sleep talking for myself

But could it be maybe
It's not me sleeping
Could it be maybe you awakening

Sleep this time tonight
Sleepwalk in the light
Sleep this time tonight (one day we'll)
Sleepwalk out of sight

One day this world will see me at the horizon
One day from a distant light
And just before I stand to face my love
I'll turn around
And with a smile I'll say my goodbyes
Just one last goodbye
Goodbye

This song is INCREDIBLE live! Go see Blindside if you get the chance!

Here's my take on this song: The lyricist asks the question "Are you trying to wake me up?" then questions, "but could it be maybe, it's not me sleeping. Could it be maybe you awakening?"

He continues to speak of himself supposedly sleepwalking, though he questions again, "could it be maybe you awakening?" I think he is talking of being asleep spiritually, and how everyone thinks he is the one sleeping, when really he's the one who's awake.

"(One day we'll) sleepwalk out of sight"

Then the bridge: "One day this world will see me at the horizon." I think this is speaking of death. "One day from a distant light." I think the distant light is heaven. "And just before I stand to face my love," I think his love is God. "I'll turn around and with a smile I'll say my goodbyes, just one last goodbye. Goodbye." He turns and says goodbye to the world.

When he whispers "Goodbye," the music stops, then starts again so hard and beautiful, with crazy intensity. The screams of "goodbye" at the end help to make this one of my favorite songs. A song of people sleeping spiritually, all the while thinking the Christians are the ones sleeping, when really only those who are Christians are awake spiritually. And finally a song that speaks of that glorious day when the Christian finally stands face to face with his love, Christ.

Well, thats my take on it. Maybe I took it too far. What do y'all think?

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
