I'm going to add my thoughts again because I butchered the last one
This song is the person seeing his sinful self. He sees himself as sleeping, like other commenters said, spiritually sleeping, a sinner. But maybe it's not him recognizing that he's sleeping, but God awakening inside of him showing him his sinful self. In other words, he's not seeing himself as sinful by his own ability, but by God beginning to move in his heart.
The chorus: sleep and sleep walking shows he still has a sinful nature and that he sins, but that he can rest in his imperfection because God is moving him toward the light. He is not moving himself by his own consciousness, but rather God, who is awakening within him, is moving him. in other words God's beginning to move his heart, causing the man to turn from the world (sinful lifestyle) to God, in other words repent, and he's walking toward the light by the power and will of God, not by his own efforts, since salvation is 100% God and we give Him no help in our salvation. The light is God, the mans love. The chorus itself may be the word of God telling him to walk away from the world, his sinful ways, to the light. Maybe that's why it sounds hypnotizing
When he says goodbye one last time, I think that means that up until the moment of his death he will still have a sinful nature and look back toward his sinful life, which probably means both the temptation to go back to the old sinful life style or the occasional sin, but at some point, when he he dies and reaches the light, his love, God, Jesus, he will say goodbye to sin forever, forever having something better. As far as the bitter sweet music sound, It's not him who's losing the world, but the world who's losing him to Christ
