| Devin Townsend – Ih-Ah! Lyrics
|
I feel like it could be about Tracy, but there could be something beyond that. The lyrics kind of make me think of a young romance. Two young lovers who are falling in love and aren't sure if they should be or not.
I feel like "ih-ah" could represent either meditative breathing, sex or a meaningless poppy mantra (but probably one of the first two). Any thoughts? |

| Devin Townsend – Demon League Lyrics

To me, it seems that the whole album is about coming to peace and understanding with yourself, the way things are, and the way you are. The songs are pretty much about everything you could possibly deal with as you get older, and "Quiet Riot" almost brings a close to things. However, thirty seconds later, "Demon League" comes in and we have Devy lying awake at night, staring at his bedroom ceiling, not quite at peace with things yet. Something's still bothering him, like he knows he still has a lot of inner demons to resolve. As human beings, we must develop. And if we choose to develop in a way in which we better ourselves, our work is never done. |

Devin's lyrics are strange. They're just about things he encounters in life, but made cryptic enough that they could really apply to anyone's life. This song sort of consoled me when I was having a tough time in my love life. Basically, I knew I had to break things off, and it felt like I had a mountain to move. The first words, "hey... flow the waterways of letting go" set up the entire song for me. It made me feel like I was drifting through a dark river that was leading me to a place where I could be happier, and all I had to do was not struggle against the currents. Awesome. |

A breakup? Maybe he needs the strength to break off a relationship with someone he really cares about - and who really cares about him - because despite the pain, it's what's best for him. |

The cover of this album and the chorus of this song are both really creepy and dreamlike, so when I listen to this track, it's almost like I can see Warrel and some shadowy woman meeting at this infinite pool of formless waters... it's amazing.

| Slayer – Cult Lyrics

Yeah, the song is nothing deeper than simple anti-organized religion, namely Christianity, and you could fault Slayer for writing a song that seems shallow. But I choose to just look at it as a fun, badass, fast, pissed off, offensive thrash metal song. What more do you want?
As for Tom being Christian or Catholic, I don't think it's true. He said that he has a Catholic "religious background," which doesn't surprise me at all. He's quoted in saying that he believes Jesus Christ wanted to spread a message of love, and that he believes in a loving supreme being, but that doesn't mean he adheres to any organized doctrines. |

So upon first hearing the song, I thought it was about war, from a regretful soldier's point of view, because the chorus was all I could really understand. I suppose it could be, I'd like to think that there's a deeper meaning beyond the song being about a psychopathic murderer. |

The chorus in this song makes me think Christianity. The "Sun in my hands" would be the fact that he has Christ in his life, but he's questioning his faith. "Becomes my despair" could that he thirsts for more wisdom about life and existence, but he's told that all the wisdom in the world is in the Bible, and he feels it isn't enough. His faith becomes his despair because he knows there's wisdom beyond religion, and he has to reject his faith to attain it.
But I could be completely off the mark. |

| Nevermore – Sentient 6 Lyrics

I like the idea that this song could be about the average person being like a machine to serve society's higher-ups, but it seems to me that the song is literally about a machine. In the end, #6 reaches his breaking point and decides to put an end to all.
I have to say, this may very well be one of the saddest songs I've heard in my life. |

| Dimmu Borgir – Antikrist Lyrics

Wouldn't you hate an organization which you believe brainwashes people and stifles their liberty for a fictional cause? Dimmu Borgir sees Christianity in this way - to rebel against a tyrannous enemy in the name of human freedom is a beautiful thing.
Not to say I completely agree with Dimmu Borgir, but it would seem that's how they feel. |

| Wolves In The Throne Room – I Will Lay Down My Bones Among the Rocks and Roots Lyrics

|
This is easily one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Most of the song is obvious: when he dies, he doesn't want to be in a box in the ground. He wants to be laid down in the woods he loves. "When I awake, the world will be born anew" refers to him decomposing and feeding the plants and animals around him, so he becomes a part of them.
The way the song winds down and ends with the birds singing is just amazing. It's almost like the female vocals are him decaying away, and the sounds of the woods are his new form. |

Am I the only one who sees this song as dealing with drug addiction? "Microns from the flamehead" is like he's about to light up his crackpipe, the "souls with blind eyes" are all the other junkies around him who are already completely high and gone. And by "taking the throne in [his] tiny hand," he's trying to feel powerful by weak and earthly means.
Yeah? |

| Protest the Hero – Blindfolds Aside Lyrics

I love the part where he repeats "drop the gun" over and over again. It's like the voice inside of him so desperately trying to convince him to do the right thing.
I think it's really interesting that the female vocalist sings the "sin I didn't care for" part at the end along with Rody. I think that at first, it's just what the executioner is thinking, but then he realizes that Kezia committed a sin SHE didn't care for, either - and for the same reasons. |

| Meshuggah – Organic Shadows Lyrics
|
Put incredibly simply, he's going insane.
At first, he's just starting to lose it. He's managed to hold it together thus far, but his "glued-on sheet of self control" can't last forever. He fights it as hard as he can, but his willpower is being depleted quickly.
At 1:29 (Heartbeats hammering at the sight), things get heavier. Things he didn't want to feel, things he was afraid of, surface completely. He stares at his own likeness in his shadow, like he's terrified by his own self.
Then, at 2:15, things change up again. The drums get all crazy, and our friend has just completely lost his mind. He's trapped in his own mind, unable to even communicate with the rest of the world around him. It's like he only exists in the shadow he sees, which is now taunting him with its silence. |

I have to wonder, though, the theme is so depressing, so what's the deal with the song's transformation at the end? Maybe it's death gently embracing us? Or maybe it symbolizes the acceptance and understanding that we, as humans, are completely insignificant, and being okay with it. |

I agree, though when I first heard the song, I assumed it was from the point of view of your average joe - someone who is a follower, and feels betrayed by Bishop. But the idea that he's of equal rank seems to make more sense.
The end of this song is just incredible. It gets me so pumped, and I find myself wanting to scream it at whoever's standing closest to me. |

| Emigrate – You Can't Get Enough Lyrics

This makes me think of an ex, and I think it might be about a similar situation.
I dated a girl who had some issues, and in the end, it became clear to me that she didn't really care for me, but instead, I was like her medication. She didn't have many other friends, so she depended on me. Then, she found new friends, and basically threw me away. She didn't need her "happy pills" anymore, so to speak. She seemed to have a penchant for drama, too. I think this is similar.
The woman he's singing to/about doesn't need him anymore. He's no longer her addiction. Her feelings for him are gone, because they were never real in the first place. And she's just creating drama. He's sick of it, but she can't get enough under her skin. She just needs more fucked up drama and is just ending up hurting him.
I could almost say that the whole album kind of tells a story about two lovers, because in a good deal of the songs, he seems to be speaking to a lover, and they seem to be going in a logical order. |

Huh. I always figured that this song was about letting God do God's work, and not taking it upon yourself. "You can be the god and let the faith become your enemy," "stand with the worthless sign, wave it in the path of every face you cannot tolerate..."
I kind of thought it was like... oi, don't try to play the role of your own god. |

| God Forbid – The Lonely Dead Lyrics

Amazing song, though I'm not completely clear on the meaning... The whole album is a story, so maybe the Lonely Dead are the ones who were rejected by society. They're dead to society, and they have only each other and their own revolutionary thoughts to guide them and keep them company.
I saw God Forbid live, and I got to scream into the mic during this song. Byron switched off with me during the "remember the dead" verse! |

There was one summer I spent painting my dad's girlfriend's house in the dullest, most white-bread suburb imaginable. I adopted Terria as my personal soundtrack for that summer, and this song summed everything up for me.
It was a very depressing summer for me, and I did a lot of growing up during those few months.
So to me, the song is kind of about doing a little bit of growing up and figuring things out for yourself. |

| Our Lady Peace – Waited Lyrics

It sounds like it's about a friend letting someone down, but I prefer to think it's about love rather than friendship, 'cause I can relate to it more that way (though I'm sure it was partially written to allow for that flexibility).
I dated a girl for a while not too long ago, and out of the blue she freaked out and broke up with me. I figured, I'd give her her space, let her figure things out, etc. and she'd eventually come back to me. But I soon came to the crushing realization that she couldn't give two shits about me. That's when my feelings changed: See lyrics for "Breeding Thorns" by Soilwork and "Drenched In Fear" by In Flames. HAH! |

This song is kind of akin to "Breeding Thorns" by Soilwork. When somebody wrongs you, don't cower and lick your wounds - let it toughen you up, and watch how pathetically your enemy struggles when they try that shit again and fail miserably. |

| Devin Townsend – The Greys Lyrics
|
One of my favorite Devy songs! I used to think the Greys referred to the aliens that are most commonly sighted - the ones with the big heads, big black eyes and gray skin, but now I'm thinking it's grays/Greys as opposed to colors, but still a pun on the aliens.
I always thought he was saying "heal your heart; heal your heart for me," which makes sense. After Ziltoid learns how cosmically insignificant he is, he's depressed. He needs to confine himself and stay away from the unknown for a while so he can heal. He needs to learn that even though there's no cosmic meaning to his existence, it doesn't mean his life is meaningless. He needs to heal so his life doesn't waste away. So he can live again and have new, colorful experiences before the grays/Greys wash away all his old memories, and he's left with nothing. |

| Soilwork – Breeding Thorns Lyrics

Hmm...
I think someone's hurt him or wronged him somehow. Possibly someone who used to be a friend, but has taken a path "down below" (forsaken friends and values, become a general asshole) and become an enemy. This person has damaged his pride, and is hiding his/herself from the fact that what they're doing and what they've become is wrong.
Speed says "You have not seen the last of me; I'm breeding thorns," kind of meaning that he's not going to just sit there and take bullshit, and he's not going to go gently - he's going to stand up for himself, and strike back.
The message that will "swallow you whole" is the truth, and he will "bury the damage," heal the wounds in his pride through retaliation and victory.
Whenever I hear him say "WON'T YOU TELL ME THAT IT'S RAW!!" it always sounds like he's saying "wrong" and not "raw," which would make more sense to me.. but either way, that's my piece on this one. |

| Rammstein – Stein um Stein Lyrics

I agree that it's about a man and his lover, sort of. I think she's more of an EX-lover, and he refuses, or is unable to, let go. Each stone is a tear - the more he cries for her, the more he walls her in this little house in his head. Once it's done, that's it for him - he'll never be able to let her go.
Also, I think that "Stein Um Stein" is a great lead-in for "Amour," because once you get to the next song, it's like part two; the guy is now completely destroyed by this beast called love. |

Does anybody else feel like Ziltoid The Omniscient might be somewhat autobiographical? In the audio commentary in "Physicist," he refers to the fact that he had a Christ complex at one point in his life, and his own insecurities tend to be a theme in his music. Perhaps Ziltoid finding out that he's really not all that Omniscient is sort of a metaphor for reaching a (certain) state of mental maturity.
Or it might just be about a fourth-dimensional alien who wants to control the Earth's supply of coffee. |
