i always thought this song was "god" talking to "the devil" ex:"..i provide the puppet...you provide the strings."="god" makes man while "the devil" pulls our strings,
but viewed through a different filter it seems it may be about being infatuated ex: "temptation of indulgence" might be lust could be the man is the puppet and the woman pulls his strings.

though some of the other phrases lead me to believe it brings up the fact that we as a culture pen up our feelings so what we should act on is swept aside and when we should be expressing ourselves we simply walk away. "you provide the spleen and I'll provide the ideal" spleen meaning the confidence, the ideal is something to fight or strive for.
