In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
Setting sun deals hands of gold
There's velvet eyes in Mexico
Just a fall away and all she said was true
Speak in tongues, speak in lies
Drooling livers, born to die
It's a wonder that those guns don't point at you
Oh, oh
Oh, oh
(Keep sayin') go on, (keep sayin') go on
(Keep sayin') you won't (live forever)
(Keep sayin') go on, (keep sayin') go on
(Keep sayin') you won't (live forever)
Point and shoot, I know just what you mean
In a world that's full of shit and gasoline, babe
One dog's dead, one's on the phone, just leave a lung or leave it alone
It's that same old song again, I hate it 'cause it's true
Oh, oh
Ooh, ooh
(Keep sayin') go on, (keep sayin') go on
(Keep sayin') you won't (live forever)
(Keep sayin') go on, (keep sayin') go on
(Keep sayin') you won't (live forever)
There's velvet eyes in Mexico
Just a fall away and all she said was true
Speak in tongues, speak in lies
Drooling livers, born to die
It's a wonder that those guns don't point at you
Oh, oh
Oh, oh
(Keep sayin') go on, (keep sayin') go on
(Keep sayin') you won't (live forever)
(Keep sayin') go on, (keep sayin') go on
(Keep sayin') you won't (live forever)
Point and shoot, I know just what you mean
In a world that's full of shit and gasoline, babe
One dog's dead, one's on the phone, just leave a lung or leave it alone
It's that same old song again, I hate it 'cause it's true
Oh, oh
Ooh, ooh
(Keep sayin') go on, (keep sayin') go on
(Keep sayin') you won't (live forever)
(Keep sayin') go on, (keep sayin') go on
(Keep sayin') you won't (live forever)

Fast Car

"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
The Night We Met
Lord Huron
Lord Huron
This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. I believe that the relationship started poorly because of the lines:
"Take me back to the night we met:When the night was full of terrors: And your eyes were filled with tears: When you had not touched me yet"
So, the first night was not a great start, but the narrator pursued the relationship and eventually both overcame the rough start to fall in love with each other:
"I had all and then most of you"
Like many relationships that turn sour, it was not a quick decline, but a gradual one where the narrator and their partner fall out of love and gradually grow apart
"Some and now none of you"
Losing someone who was once everything in your world, who you could confide in, tell your secrets to, share all the most intimate parts of your life, to being strangers with that person is probably one of the most painful experiences a person can go through. So Painful, the narrator wants to go back in time and tell himself to not even pursue the relationship.
This was the perfect song for "13 Reasons Why"

Magical

How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
josh - "This is a song about being stuck in a Mexican jail for two weeks"
sometimes has these extra lyrics at the end when they play it live -
It's you that's around me And it's all you, ohh
by the way - check out thefade.net
It's annoying how this is one of their best songs and it's still only got 4 posts, when their new singles have got loads. I agree with Nick Oliveri, the new album's not as good as any of their old stuff. Anyway, I think the line "It's that same on song again" is wrong and it's "It's that same old song again."
@Leif_Erikson those lyrics sound right to me. I love your username! You like Interpol?
"Setting sun deals hands of gold" *- sounds like someone got a goooood deal on some cocaine.
"There's velvet eyes in Mexico" *- ever seen someone's eyes after a week long coke bender?
"Just a fall away And all she said was true" *- must have been told it was good shi..stuff.
"Speak in tongues, speak in lies" *- ever talked to someone after they have been on a week long coke bender? They talk gibberish and will tell you the most unreal stories.
"Drooling livers, born to die" *- The liver processes toxins and chemicals out of the body... excessive usage will "pickle" your liver to death. Sounds like he is implying his liver is jonesing too.
"It's a wonder that those guns don't point at you" *- Sounds like it is referring to either a cartel or police organization... or possibly 'guns' refers to I.V. syringes.
[chorus:] "Keep sayin, go on, keep sayin, go on, keep sayin, you will live forever" *- Sounds like he is trying to convince himself that the junk won't kill him eventually.
"Point and shoot, I know just what you mean" *- Possibly I.V. use?
"In a world that's full of shit and gasoline, baby" *- Shit could refer to the slang term for drugs in general... gasoline is the solvent used when extracting chemicals from coca leaf.
"One dog's dead one's on the phone" *- I always thought 'dog' was slang for someone's friend. Sounds like one of his friends had a not so good time and the other is wondering where the shit is...
"Just leave a lung or leave it alone" *- There is a high cost when strung out on something like coke... mentally, socially, emotionally, and physically... this likely means that the cost will be too high.
"It's that same on song again I hate it cause it's true" *- Regardless of how much you dislike being dependent upon something, when the monkey is on your back it is hard to keep that little bastard fed.
[repeat chorus]
Just my take on things, but again, who really knows what the hell the artists are talking about when they write songs.
take care, piggy pig.
@napoleonpigg
@napoleonpigg. Same "on" song again was typo. Took me 6 years to fix it.
....makes you wonder what the hell he did to get arrested in mexico and held for two weeks....
I don't have a clue what the lyrics mean but this song is fucking incredible. One of my all time favorites for sure.
You're a dumbfuck, negative. In the DVD, he talks about a lady selling crucifix's that told him that he was gonna be in for trouble. He told her something like you only live once. he got arrested later and he was in the back of the cop car while the cops were beating up some other schmucks. He felt sick and gave them fake gold chains for freedom.
Hmmm...well I don't know but Mexicola..someone beat me by saying about the coke thing and well I heard that speaking in tongues could mean orgasm..(go to Eagles of death metal-speaking in tongues look at comments)
Who knows, but ace song!
Isn't mexicola a drink? Like tequila and coke?
Anyway, knowing Josh Homme's lyrics it's probably about a lot of things. It could be about being in a jail for two weeks, but then again, they could just be saying that because it sounds cool. Anyway, it's a brilliant song.
This "you only live once" stuff is very Josh...
I just wonder what trouble he was getting into. I still don't get most of the song, like the dogs and livers. Fuck! The songs are all so ambiguous, makes you think of lots of things. Thats what I like the most about their music.
This song is about mortality and excess and the rock'n roll lifestyle.
"Setting sun deals hands of gold" Gambling reference. Or refernce to the role of chance in life.
"Speak in tongues, speak in lies" The music industry is not the most honest.
"Drooling livers, born to die" Alcohol damages your liver. Josh and Nick don't mind a drop.
"Keep sayin, go on, keep sayin, go on, keep sayin, you will live forever" Delude yourself that you can survive the excess of the lifestyle.
"One dog's dead one's on the phone" His doctor or a record company exec?
"Just leave a lung or leave it alone" Smoking damages lungs and they smoke.
"It's that same on song again I hate it cause it's true"
He hates hearing about the damage he is doing to himself.
