I Love The Night Lyrics

That night her kiss told me it was over
I walked out late into the dark
The misty gloom seems to soak up my sorrow
The further I went on I felt a spreading calm
Then suddenly my eyes were bathed in a light
And the lovely lady in white was by my side
She said "Like me I see you're walking alone
Won't you please stay?" I couldn't look away

She said I love the night
The day is OK and the sun can be fun
But I live to see those rays slip away
I love the night
There's so much I can show and give to you
If you will welcome me tonight
If only you had been there my dear
We could have shared this together

No mortal was meant to know such wonder
One look in the mirror told me so
Come darkness I'll see her again
Yes I'm gonna go 'cause now I know

I love the night
The day is OK and the sun can be fun
But I live to see those rays slip away
I love the night
There's so much that I can show and give to you
If you will welcome me tonight
If only you had been there my dear
We could have shared this together

This is one of the most beautiful songs ever! its about the point in a relationship when a person knows that its over, but then has nowhere to go afterwards. So in sorrow he walks around during the night, which in its beauty has the calming effect on anyone, and he ends up meeting this girl who is in the same dillemma, she has too, been dumped by her partner, these two walk around and reminisce about the good times they had with their spuses, and how much they miss them, and they both wonder why they were really dumped, but in reality both know that they will never come back to them. So each night they walk around in the beauty of the night and grow closer to each other in the romance of the darkness. Besides this i also believe that this song is about how inevitable true love is. It can be found in the oddest places at the oddest times. If one relationship doesnt work out, then you shouldnt give up, you shouldnt do nothing but look for your true love either. you should go about your buisness casually, and then one day, one way or another, you will find the one, and then you will be eternally blessed.

always though it was about being turned into a vampire. i like your comment!

Not Valid

@mingoesbueno Oh NO absolutely NOT! I was emailing Eric Bloom on and off for awhile and asked him if I was right (of course I was) that this was yes a love song but also about vampires!!! Eric is the rhythm guitarist for BOC. Even though I am completely aware of vampire symbology -that it IS about vampires!! BOC has numerous vampire and supernatura, as well as HP Lovecraft themed songs.

Actually, I also think that mingoesbueno is correct, but Blue Oyster Cult is known for writing songs of supernatural types. I think this song tells a vampire love story. "no mortal was meant to know such wonders" and also "one look in the mirror told me so", vampires do not see their reflections. Also, "I couldn't look away" he was mesmerized by her, a vampiric-type power. Also, the song tells of them only being able to be together during the night time.

great song BOC have to be the most underatted band ever!! i love the way he uses metaphors to explain well basically everything "The misty gloom seems to soak up my sorrow" amazin line

wow! that sounds good!! it all makes sense now!! on the album spectres, which originally featured i love the night, the track was followed by "nosferatu" which is a version af a vampire!! nosferatu is a ghetto rigged story which was jacked from the original dracula stroy. if you google search nosferatu, you will find everything you need to know about it. it all adds up!

I'm really surprised no one has mentioned cocaine here in reference to the meaning of this song.... I think the song is about coming out of relationship and cocaine use, allow me to make my case.

"That night her kiss told me it was over... The misty gloom seems to soak up my sorrow"

  • The narrator is coming out of a relationship, feeling lonely at night.

"The further I went on I felt a spreading calm Then suddenly my eyes were bathed in a light"

  • The spreading calm could refer to the warming sensation of cocaine moving through the narrators body, and "bathed in light" could refer to the hyper sensitively to light resulting from cocaine use.

"And the lovely lady in white was by my side She said "Like me I see you're walking alone Won't you please stay?" I couldn't look away"

  • White lady (lady in white) is a very common slang term for cocaine, prevalent when this song was written. Won't you please stay/couldn't look away, both can refer to the soothing/comforting/numbing the narrator is experiencing from the drug which is relieving his relationship sorrows and depression.

"No mortal was meant to see such wonder One look in the mirror told me so"

  • The first line can refer to the surreal and mind blowing sensation of doing cocaine, especially for the first time. The narrator's look in the mirror and seeing his (drug induced) state verifies that he is experiencing something amazing and wondrous.

"Come darkness I'll see her again Yes I'm gonna go 'cause now I know"

  • He does cocaine at night (perhaps routinely now), getting to experience the comforting sensation which takes away his pain - and seeing his "white lady" again.

@Hyperion395 NO, NO, NO. It is NOT about cocaine. BOC, their managers and associates are all into outre subjects. HP Lovecraft, supernatural events, and yes Vampires. Which is what this song is SO OBVIOUSLY about. I am an armchair expert on vampires and I even asked Eric Bloom their rhythm guitarist - and he confirmed it. As well as confirming the HP Lovecraft references.

Hyperion 395 is correct..." But I live to see those rays slip away " Snorting Coke. "One look in the mirror told me so Come darkness I'll see her again" Looks like somebody likes the White Lady on the mirror rays slipping away bust out some powder next night... innuendos were rampant in Lyrics back then... IE: "Spill The Wine Take The Pearl" = ACID

She said the day is ok and the sun can be fun. For a vampire a sun is definatly not fun, nor is the day anywhere near OK. both those things = death for a vampire. But I dunno... Great song though, this ranks 3rd after godzilla and cities on flame with rock and roll, then comes dont fear the reaper.

Here's my guess at the song. It is supernatural, but it's not a vampire tale, as Cratios points out. I know who the Lady in White is... she's the Moon. He's walking in the night and the misty gloom covers all, and then he's bathed in white light - because the Moon has risen, and She has appeared to him in a human form to ask him to go with her.

i think the vampire theory fits. The day is ok and the sun can be fun line, i think she is basicly trying to get around the fact thats shes a vampire, by rewording it so imply she only comes out at night, not because she has to, but because she wants to. *(thats what she wants him to think) and the line "I live to see those rays, slip away" she actually does mean LIVE, because what do vampires do, feed off others.
