Blue Öyster Cult – I Love The Night Lyrics 16 years ago
I'm really surprised no one has mentioned cocaine here in reference to the meaning of this song.... I think the song is about coming out of relationship and cocaine use, allow me to make my case.

"That night her kiss told me it was over...
The misty gloom seems to soak up my sorrow"

- The narrator is coming out of a relationship, feeling lonely at night.

"The further I went on I felt a spreading calm
Then suddenly my eyes were bathed in a light"

- The spreading calm could refer to the warming sensation of cocaine moving through the narrators body, and "bathed in light" could refer to the hyper sensitively to light resulting from cocaine use.

"And the lovely lady in white was by my side
She said "Like me I see you're walking alone
Won't you please stay?" I couldn't look away"

- White lady (lady in white) is a very common slang term for cocaine, prevalent when this song was written. Won't you please stay/couldn't look away, both can refer to the soothing/comforting/numbing the narrator is experiencing from the drug which is relieving his relationship sorrows and depression.

"No mortal was meant to see such wonder
One look in the mirror told me so"

- The first line can refer to the surreal and mind blowing sensation of doing cocaine, especially for the first time. The narrator's look in the mirror and seeing his (drug induced) state verifies that he is experiencing something amazing and wondrous.

"Come darkness I'll see her again
Yes I'm gonna go 'cause now I know"

- He does cocaine at night (perhaps routinely now), getting to experience the comforting sensation which takes away his pain - and seeing his "white lady" again.
