The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.
I saw your queen
Swam out below her star on sea beneath
Though I lifted up my hands to her
She never lifted me
Oh something's missing in me
I felt it deep within me
As lovers left me to bleed alone
Found something sweet
On the island with the daughters of eve
But through thick and thin they've gone away
And only left their grief
Oh, something's missing in me
I felt it deep within me
As lovers left me to bleed alone
Something's missing in me
I felt it deep within me
As lovers left me to bleed alone
Something's missing in me
Something's missing in me
Down here love wasn't meant to be
It wasn't meant to be for me
All is vanity underneath the sun (It wasn't meant to be)
All is vanity
Something's missing in me
I felt it deep within me
As lovers left me to bleed alone
Something's missing in me
I felt it deep within me
As lovers left me to bleed alone
Something's missing in me
Something's missing in me
Something's missing in me
Something's missing in me
Swam out below her star on sea beneath
Though I lifted up my hands to her
She never lifted me
Oh something's missing in me
I felt it deep within me
As lovers left me to bleed alone
Found something sweet
On the island with the daughters of eve
But through thick and thin they've gone away
And only left their grief
Oh, something's missing in me
I felt it deep within me
As lovers left me to bleed alone
Something's missing in me
I felt it deep within me
As lovers left me to bleed alone
Something's missing in me
Something's missing in me
Down here love wasn't meant to be
It wasn't meant to be for me
All is vanity underneath the sun (It wasn't meant to be)
All is vanity
Something's missing in me
I felt it deep within me
As lovers left me to bleed alone
Something's missing in me
I felt it deep within me
As lovers left me to bleed alone
Something's missing in me
Something's missing in me
Something's missing in me
Something's missing in me

In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Plastic Bag

Ed Sheeran
“Plastic Bag” is a song about searching for an escape from personal problems and hoping to find it in the lively atmosphere of a Saturday night party. Ed Sheeran tells the story of his friend and the myriad of troubles he is going through. Unable to find any solutions, this friend seeks a last resort in a party and the vanity that comes with it.
“I overthink and have trouble sleepin’ / All purpose gone and don’t have a reason / And there’s no doctor to stop this bleedin’ / So I left home and jumped in the deep end,” Ed Sheeran sings in verse one. He continues by adding that this person is feeling the weight of having disappointed his father and doesn’t have any friends to rely on in this difficult moment. In the second verse, Ed sings about the role of grief in his friend’s plight and his dwindling faith in prayer. “Saturday night is givin’ me a reason to rely on the strobe lights / The lifeline of a promise in a shot glass, and I’ll take that / If you’re givin’ out love from a plastic bag,” Ed sings on the chorus, as his friend turns to new vices in hopes of feeling better.
After reading the journal entry in the album booklet, I think this song is about how people try to find their love on Earth and feel empty and lost when they cannot find it, because it is God's love that they are missing and longing for.
This song is about Gods never ending love the queen could easly someone she looked up to but has failed her n then the island with the daughters of eve repersent women even with people of her own sex she cant find someone to stay by her side through it all and that missing feeling is the need for Gods love as Gods love will never leave us
how accurate are these lyrics? were they done by ear? i know the songs are streaming on myspace right now.
Ever since I saw the video of Lacey singing in the studio to this song, i've waited for it's release. I LOVE IT!!!!! Maybe even the best song on there!!!!!
these are the correct lyrics.
where can i see the video of her in the studio??
these are perfect lyrics
I saw it on Yuotube witch made me look it up
I think the lyrics are correct, they came straight from the record label so they should be. :)
This is my second favorite song from MM. It just flows and has amazing lyrics. Such a good song!
I'm not a record label, though sometimes I wish I were. Yes, they were all done by ear. Ahaha.
wow dude congrats, you are freaking amazing!
ahhhhhhh Love this song! The more I listen to it, the more of it I think I understand. Would I be right in thinking this song's about the unending love that God has for us that no one (no matter how close they are to us) can match? I think she's also talking about how people/friends/lovers sometimes leave you when things go pearshaped. The "I saw the queen.." bit could be about her looking up to/loving someone who did not return her affection. Either way, awwwwwwshum song :D
'i saw the queen' she could be talking about The Virgin Mary, Christians consider her the queen: Hail Holy Queen, Mother MAry, Mother of the Lord, Our Lady of Guadalupe; we(Christians) think Mary is a 'queen' in away for being the Mother of Christ
Ahh, never thought of that
But why would she then say something's missing? :S
It's a though that Mary is who she's talking about, but why would she say, "Though I lifted up my hands to her she never lifted me"?
it is catholics who consider mary a queen and hail her as such, not christians. based on everything i've heard and know about the band, i can state that flyleaf is NOT catholic, and so i'm willing to bet that the queen isnt a reference to mary. i agree with DixieJ's thoughts on who the queen is, all things considered.

also, i realise that it is fully possible for a catholic to be christian, i want to avoid going into detail about the difference between the two, but /only catholics/ consider mary the queen, so the statement "Christians consider her the queen" is quite inaccurate.
This is my favorite song from the new album.
And people, don't interpret their songs in the "Christian way" just because the band members are Christians. It's like what Lacey quoted P.O.D. for, "If I'm a plumber, and I'm a Christian.. does that make me a Christian plumber?"
I think the reason people automatically assume it is about Christianity is because the refer to Jesus or God in almost all of their songs...
lacey did say something about how you cant be Christian and only make some of your life that way, it has to be all of it and not just how you want it to be.. and she was saying that about her songs though in some form of way their songs can all be made Christian
She also said that if you're a Christian, it affects everything about you. I think people have a way of thinking that Christian bands make only worship songs. I really think the true meaning of a Christian band is that they refuse to write anything that would contradict their faith. If you are a Christian you will act Christ like. If you are a plumber you do your job. It's not like you carry a bible instead of tools, but if there is a way to shed the light of Christ while you do your job. So many Christian artists nowadays just make God their way of getting paid. I read somewhere that the Gospel Music awards (or whatever it is called) held a benefit concert. Tickets were $1000 dollars apiece. Flyleaf may not be a Christian band in the ccm sense, but I think they've proven themselves more than Christian by their lyrical content. Did they become a band to spread a Christian message? Probably not, but I think they are doing what God calls them to do and that is being Christians.
Like unsamani said above, Lacey said they are christians and that is the central focus of their lives. Their faith can't help but have an influence on their songs and lyrics. Especially on Memento Mori, almost EVERY song of that album has a christian conotation to it. So, I would think it's appropriate to say that this song has a christian meaning as well.

"I found something sweet
On the island with the daughters of Eve."..

Eve, biblical figure who is one of the most noted for being a sinner and falling into temptation. Meaning, dwelling in indulgences and living as a sinner keeps you caged and eventually heartbroken in the end when it's all gone and there is no pleasure anymore. There is no one to turn to, and what's left is to turn your heart to God which enables you to live freely, not depending on indulgences and fake promises.
Lacey is talking about how one sees love.. Or how a person once thought love was about, to say the least.
And all those wondrous thoughts you had about love leading you to paradise and an ideal world, broke down to false hopes. And no matter what you do, no matter where you go, you always feel something inside you that's missing.
Okay, I agreee with you so far but what do you think the "something" is?
It could be anything really. But for me, it is love, affection, belongingness.. et cetera. That's why this song speaks to me so much, because it is exactly how I feel. :)
I really love this song.
I believe that over all it's about love lost. I think it gives examples of family, friends, and lovers lost. Like the queen being a mother figure who wasn't really around or the daughters of eve being friends that have just faded out of the narrator's life. In the end the narrator just gives up on love.
THat's just whaty I think:3 and how i relate to the song...
i think it means that she felt that she missed some love, and that people will let your down one day ,and that God won't let your down our leave you ,he will love you for ever with a incredibel love he has for you
I know this could be a wrong interpretation but im basing it off how it relates to me. I pretty much agree with everyone else but when she says
"I saw the queen Swam out below her star on sea beneath Though I lifted up my hands to her She never lifted me"
I think of it as confiding into Mary the mother of God. ( I once heard a priest say if God didn't answer his prayer he would go to Mary to ask her since she was more motherly? or something like that)
And basically she asked Mary for a kind of love on earth.(thats what i did)
For "Oh something's missing in me I felt it deep within me As lovers left me to bleed alone"
And for that part i pretty much agree with it i interpret it as A: Even when we find love, theres still that feeling of something missing you like a longing( thats God) B: Just the fact that she wants find an actual love(as in a realtionship) but no-one right really came? I agree more with A
well now that i actually break it down i see that i think everyone was right except at the queen part i think she's talking about Mary.
