Head > Heels Lyrics

She came in the bedroom
Looking like a photograph
Turned to face the window
Moonlight traced the contours of her back
Only she can see me
Shed the skin that guards the man
Sheltered by the ceiling
This is the start and end of everything

And we'll go it alone
'Cause no one will understand
Oh, it just feels like flying
Here within the confines of your bed
How beautiful we blend

Crashing in head then heels
Crashing in head then heels
Crashing in head then heels

Unrequited love songs
Longing words we used to sing
Faith was in the first one
We opened up our hearts to let them in
Now all these scars are keloid
Reminding us and cautioning
Rebuild what was destroyed
Turn it, then the chapter can begin

And we'll go it alone
'Cause no one will understand
How this just feels like flying
Here within the confines of your bed
How beautiful we blend

And together we soar
High over the old wasteland
We escaped the fire
Planted roots when there was nothing left
How beautiful we blend

Crashing in head then heels
Crashing in head then heels
Crashing in head then heels
Crashing in head then heels

Crashing in head then heels
Crashing in head then heels
Crashing in head then heels
Crashing in head then heels

“Autumn Variations” is the title of Ed Sheeran’s somewhat surprising seventh studio album. The wait for this album was short, with the gap between the announcement and release being only one month. No singles were released in support of the album though attendees of his ‘Mathematics Tour’ were treated to previews in the last days of the tour. Fourteen tracks were listed on the final cut of “Autumn Variations” and the album is closed by this track titled “Head > Heels.” It was written by Ed Sheeran and Aaron Dessner and produced by the latter.

Anyone who wants to make a case for Ed Sheeran as a songwriter has so many great examples to pick from, including “Head > Heels.” The poetic lyrics are the standout but the performance is at a pretty high level too. I’ll score it 8/10.
