This is where our diligence has lead
The waves roll in to claim our patient steps
Can we become more than just ourselves?
And leave the sand, I wonder will I doubt

[Chorus:]
It's firefight, I won't run
They're spitting spite all through my blood
For you and me, there's nowhere left to hide
Except you and me, there's no one else alive

This is now the moment after next
All these silver eyes of the temptress
Why open the door if you won't go?
Don't ask twice if you don't wanna know

[Chorus]

Is there an answer?
If it's an honest one, honestly worth this question
There's no question
The city as my witness
I am who I wanna be, but you could be anything
Just be anything here with me
Endless quotes and with the secondhand
If you let go then that's where time will stand

[Chorus x2]

To me this is about two people that have are locked in a wicked love game. They are both in love but not together and are both angry at each other for things they've done to each other.

"This is where our diligence has led The waves roll in to claim our patient steps"

They have been in this game for a long time

"Can we become more than just ourselves? And leave the sand our want, our will, our doubt?"

Will they ever get over themselves and finally be together?

    "It's firefight, I won't run"

He is done running from everything and will stay and fight, and everything that has built up is going to come out of both of them in a passionate explosion, letting out everything the other has done that has hurt them.

"There's spit and spite all through my blood"

He is very angry and spiteful about everything she has done to him

"For you and me, there's nowhere left to hide Except you and me, there's no one else alive"

They can't hide from each other any more. No one else matters at this point it's just him and her.

"This is now the moment after next"

time is continuing to slip away and they are still not together

"Are these still the eyes of a temptress?"

She hurt him in the past. She lured him in and ripped his heart out. Would she do it again?

"Why open a door when you won't go?"

She is threatening to let go and move on, but she isn't going anywhere.

"Don't ask twice if you don't wanna know"

He is saying to her not to act like she wants to try again if she is going to let go. don't make him think she is in it to the end if she isn't going to stay to find out if they are destined for each other.

"Is there an answer? And if it's an honest one, honestly worth it's question There's no question"

He just wants her to be honest and he will forgive her

"The city as my witness I am who I wanna be, but you could be anything Just be anything and here with me"

He knows what he wants, he just wants her.

"Love is quartz and breath the second hand"

Just as quartz is what provides the small bit of power to move the second hand in a watch, their love is all that keeps him breathing.

"If you let go then that's where time will stand"

If she gives up on them and moves on he will be lost in the past. he will never be able to let her go.

This is just my interpretation and what I hear when I listen to this song. I am not saying I am right, because I don't think there is a correct interpretation of a song. How the song relates to your own life is generally how you will interpret a song and different people lead different lives and encounter different situations. This song just really seems to speak to my present situation...

This song seems to be about being with someone and the moment being right and being swallowed up in the passion, the "firefight"... Not letting the transgressions and other sins against love that happened in the past interfere (Silver eyes of temptress). The person the author is talking to is considering leaving and the author won't change/leave their feelings behind (if you let go then that's where time will stand)...

    great song

I think its about deciding whether to take the next step and go forward with a relationship...

It seems like he's wondering what she wants out of this, and he knows he wants to be in a relationship but he's unsure about what she'll say. " Can we become more than just ourselves?"

"I am who I wanna be, but you could be anything Just be anything here with me. Endless quotes and with the secondhand If you let go then that's where time will stand." To me this is saying that he knows what he wants, but she needs to make up her mind, and if she decides not to progress with the relationship "that's where time will stand" and things wont move forward.

These are the lyrics as I hear them:

This is where our diligence has lead The waves roll in to claim our patient steps Can we become more than just ourselves And leave the sand I want, or will our doubt?

It's firefight and I won't run. They're spitting spite all through my blood For you and me, there's nowhere left to hide Except you and me, there's no one else alive

This is now the moment after next. Are these still the eyes of the temptress? Why open the door if you won't go? Don't ask twice if you don't wanna know.

It's firefight and I won't run. They're spitting spite all through my blood For you and me, there's nowhere left to hide Except you and me, there's no one else alive

Is there an answer? And if it's an honest one, honestly worth it's question There's no question, The city as my witness, I am who I wanna be, but you could be anything, Just be anything here with me. Love is quartz and breadth of second hand If you let go then that's where time will stand.

It's firefight and I won't run. They're spitting spite all through my blood For you and me, there's nowhere left to hide Except you and me, there's no one else alive

These lyrics have a few mistakes, here are the correct lyrics straight from the CD booklet:

This is where our diligence has led The waves roll in to claim our patient steps Can we become more than just ourselves And leave the sand our want, our will, our doubt?

It's firefight and I won't run. There's spit and spite all through my blood For you and me, there's nowhere left to hide Except you and me, there's no one else alive

This is now the moment after next. Are these still the eyes of the temptress? Why open the door when you won't go? Don't ask twice if you don't want to know.

It's firefight and I won't run. There's spit and spite all through my blood For you and me, there's nowhere left to hide Except you and me, there's no one else alive

Is there an answer? And if it's an honest one, honestly worth its question There's no question, The city as my witness, I am who I want to be, Because you could be anything, Just be anything and with me Love is quartz and breath the second hand If you let go then that's where time will stand.

I see this song being through the eyes of a guy who is secretly dating a girl and their secret has come out.

"I won't run" He won't leave her, he's goin to fight for their relationship.

"For you and me, there's nowhere left to hide Except you and me, there's no one else alive" There's not safe place for them anymore, their secret is out. No one else's opinion matters to him but her's.

"Why open the door when you won't go? Don't ask twice if you don't want to know." She's feeling guilty for being with him and is willing to give up on the relationship. She asks him if he wants to stay with her.

"Is there an answer? And if it's an honest one, honestly worth its question There's no question" He says he loves her so much that it's not even a question.

"The city as my witness, I am who I want to be, Because you could be anything, Just be anything and with me" It doesn't matter what society thinks, he's going to stay true to who he is. With or without her.

It's interesting that this song works even if Jim is the one who did wrong in the relationship. It might even work better, because when he says "Except you and me, there's no one else alive", he's assuring the one he hurt so badly that he's finished looking for thrills or excitement with anyone else. This song plays really well into the overall concept of that record, I think, and it's really beautiful.

This song comes across to me a little different mostly because I fit it to my current situation. The girl I've been seeing for awhile now is working through a lot of personal things, and said is really not ready for a relationship, even though I consider us in one really, but that's besides the point, shes unwilling to fully open herself up to me, holding back mostly because she has a fear of commitment.

Saying that this song comes across the same way, he has waited and waited for her to fully commit to him but is unwilling to wait anymore. He obviously loves her but is bringing the situation to an end one way or another, making her choose now to be with him or end it.

The first verse is him starting the choice with "Can we become more than just ourselves?".

The chorus explains that he's had enough of the situation as is, that he can't take it anymore, that she has nowhere left to hide and must make the choice now.

The second verse is him waiting for the answer. "Why open the door if you won't go?" shows that he knows she wants to be with him, so why won't she do so.

The bridge/third verse is him begging her to choose him: "The city as my witness, I am who I wanna be, but you could be anything. Just be anything here with me!". "If you let go then that's where time will stand." is him stating if she chooses to end it its over for good.

That's my take on it, such a good song and an amazing band. Saw them this past October, are just as good live as they are on their albums.

I Can't Go To Sleep

This song is written as the perspective of the boys in the street, as a whole, and what path they are going to choose as they get older and grow into men. (This is why the music video takes place in an orphanage.) The seen, and unseen collective suffering is imbedded in the boys’ mind, consciously or subconsciously, and is haunting them. Which path will the boys choose? Issac Hayes is the voice of reason, maybe God, the angel on his shoulder, or the voice of his forefathers from beyond the grave who can see the big picture and are pleading with the boys not to continue the violence and pattern of killing their brothers, but to rise above. The most beautiful song and has so many levels. Racism towards African Americans in America would not exist if everyone sat down and listened to this song and understood the history behind the words. The power, fear, pleading in RZA and Ghostface voices are genuine and powerful. Issac Hayes’ strong voice makes the perfect strong father figure, who is possibly from beyond the grave.

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Just A Little Lovin'
Dusty Springfield
I don't think it's necessarily about sex. It's about wanting to start the day with some love and affection. Maybe a warm cuddle. I'm not alone in interpreting it that way! For example: "'Just a Little Lovin’ is a timeless country song originally recorded by Eddy Arnold in 1954. The song, written by Eddie Miller and Jimmy Campbell, explores the delicate nuances of love and showcases Arnold’s emotive vocals. It delves into the universal theme of love and how even the smallest gesture of affection can have a profound impact on our lives." https://oldtimemusic.com/the-meaning-behind-the-song-just-a-little-lovin-by-eddy-arnold/

How would you describe the feeling of being in love? For Ed Sheeran, the word is “Magical.” in HIS three-minute album opener, he makes an attempt to capture the beauty and delicacy of true love with words. He describes the magic of it all over a bright Pop song produced by Aaron Dessner.
