This song comes across to me a little different mostly because I fit it to my current situation. The girl I've been seeing for awhile now is working through a lot of personal things, and said is really not ready for a relationship, even though I consider us in one really, but that's besides the point, shes unwilling to fully open herself up to me, holding back mostly because she has a fear of commitment.
Saying that this song comes across the same way, he has waited and waited for her to fully commit to him but is unwilling to wait anymore. He obviously loves her but is bringing the situation to an end one way or another, making her choose now to be with him or end it.
The first verse is him starting the choice with "Can we become more than just ourselves?".
The chorus explains that he's had enough of the situation as is, that he can't take it anymore, that she has nowhere left to hide and must make the choice now.
The second verse is him waiting for the answer. "Why open the door if you won't go?" shows that he knows she wants to be with him, so why won't she do so.
The bridge/third verse is him begging her to choose him: "The city as my witness, I am who I wanna be, but you could be anything. Just be anything here with me!". "If you let go then that's where time will stand." is him stating if she chooses to end it its over for good.
That's my take on it, such a good song and an amazing band. Saw them this past October, are just as good live as they are on their albums.
