You can go out dancing
And I'll write about you, dancing without you
And I'll shed a tear between my legs

When you were here, I missed you
Now that you're away, I'm out there without you
And I shed a tear between my legs

Though we live in the same city
You live in another state far away from me and all of my unfaded charms
But when the rocket ships all fall, and the bridges - they all buckle
And everybody's packing up their station wagons
There's a number you can call, like a breast that you can suckle
And we quietly will exit as it all is happening

Again, I'm afraid of one thing
Will I walk away from love knowing nothing, wearing my heart between my legs?
But when I know you're naked, lying on the bed while I'm at the piano
All I can say is I can't fake it

When the rocket ships all fall, and the bridges - they all buckle
And everybody's packing up their station wagons
There's a number you can call, like a breast that you can suckle
And we quietly will exit as it all is happening again
'Cause there's a river running underground, underneath the town towards the sea
That only I know all about
On which from this city we can flee
('Cause there's a river running underground, underneath the town towards the sea
That only I know all about
On which from this city we can flee)
On which from this city we can flee
(We can flee)

I hope I'm not the only one who noticed the subtle tribute to "The Phantom of the Opera" at the end of this song. I almost laughed out loud when I heard it.

Great song. Really catchy, but kind of hard to keep up with at the same time. So far, it's my favorite from RW's latest, but I have yet to truly figure out the lyrics ...

I think this song is about lust. He says

'Now that you're away, I'm out there without you And I shed a tear between my legs'

I took that to mean that he's sad the other person is not there but he's only sad between his legs...not in his heart. And later he says:

'I'm afraid of one thing, Will I walk away from love knowing nothing, wearing my heart between my legs?'

He's afraid he'll never find real love and that his relationships are only going to be based on lust.

Also : "Though we live in the same city, You live in another state far away from me "

They are physically close but they're not really there for each other.

One of my favorite tracks off the new cd!

This song is sooooo much better live! I was hoping he'd release it, but was disappointed because it didn't sound as funky as it did when it was live.

I thought the voice at the end of the song was Neil Tennent. It is actually Sian Phillips, but it has a definite Pet Shop Boys feel

I also loved the Phantom tribute! I literally laughed out loud in my car when it came on.

I think it's about the honesty of lust. Shedding a tear is a visceral thing to do - and he's shedding it between his legs (I'll pass the obvious semen observation).

But when I know you're naked, lying on the bed while I'm at the piano All I can say is I can't fake it

-- It's all there. They can turn to each other for one thing only, but it's something real. In my book, that's the purest form of relationships.

i thought the voice was neil tennent as well. this is such a good song! super catchy, and i love the lyrics. anyway, i just read a bulletin posted by those operating rufus's official myspace. anyone who has tickets to one of his concerts this summer can try out and record himself/herself (youtube) doing the spoken word part of this song and then later perform it onstage.

What i get from this song is that he is trying to understand someone and wants the old them back and that maybe someday "when the rocket ships all fall, and the bridges, they all buckle And everybody's packing up their station wagons"

and that maybe he is new at love but cant deny it and wants it, and maybe people were judging them and thats why he wants to leave with that person

I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

Amazing
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran tells a story of unsuccessfully trying to feel “Amazing.” This track is about the being weighed down by emotional stress despite valiant attempts to find some positivity in the situation. This track was written by Ed Sheeran from the perspective of his friend. From the track, we see this person fall deeper into the negative thoughts and slide further down the path of mental torment with every lyric.

Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
