The Night Will Only Know Lyrics
That night will live forever
Their first time to lie together
They were finally where desire dared them to go
Both belonging to another
But longing to be lovers
Promising each other that the night will only know.
Parked on some old backstreet
They laid down in the backseat
And fell into the fire down below
But they would pay for their deceving
For a deadly web was weaving
Why they picked that spot that evening
Lord, the night will only know.
Well within the innuendos
Just outside the steamy windows
The night was shattered by a woman's scream
Motionless and frightened
The grip of fate had tightened
And with trembling hands they wiped away the steam.
They saw a woman pleading
Stumbling, begging, and retreating
'Til she became the victim of a foe
And they watched her fall in silence
To save their own alliance
But the reason for the violence
Just the night will only know
And every paper ran the story
She was stripped of all her glory
And they told exactly how the woman died
Abandoned and forsaken
Too many pills were taken
And they ruled the woman's death a suicide.
Bound by their behavior
They could have been her savior
Now guilt becomes an endless debt they owe
But another crime was committed
And it's never been admitted
Have the guilty been acquitted
Lord, the night will only know.
Their first time to lie together
They were finally where desire dared them to go
Both belonging to another
But longing to be lovers
Promising each other that the night will only know.
They laid down in the backseat
And fell into the fire down below
But they would pay for their deceving
For a deadly web was weaving
Why they picked that spot that evening
Lord, the night will only know.
Just outside the steamy windows
The night was shattered by a woman's scream

And with trembling hands they wiped away the steam.

Thank you for answering my question. Now to answer yours:
"What I want to know is what
"But another crime was committed And it's never been admitted Have the guilty been acquitted Lord, the night will only know."
is referring to."
I think what this means is that the "crime" was that the couple in the car were being adulterous. Adultry is oftne considered a crime in addtion to the fact that they were an accessory to murder because they lied by omission and also because they didn nothing to help the person being murdered.
'That night will live forever Their first time to lie together They were finally where desire dared them to go Both belonging to another But longing to be lovers Promising each other that the night will only know.'

Obviously stating that the charachters will remember the night forever, firstly this is because it is their first time going to have sex with each other. THey are both married but have been longing to be together for a long time and now they finally are they have decided that it will forever be their own secret.

'Parked on some old...
'Parked on some old backstreet They laid down in the backseat And fell into the fire down below But they would pay for their deceving For a deadly web was weaving Why they picked that spot that evening Lord, the night will only know'
They have decided to have their affair in the car parked away from public view. The spot wasn't planned it was random but little did they know it would haunt them.
'Well within the innuendos Just outside the steamy windows The night was shattered by a woman's scream Motionless and frightened The grip of fate had tightened And with trembling hands they wiped away the steam.'
Whilst having a good bit of fun they've heard a woman screaming outside which has obviously shocked them and they've had to carefully look to see what happened.
'They saw a woman pleading Stumbling, begging, and retreating 'Til she became the victim of a foe And they watched her fall in silence To save their own alliance But the reason for the violence Just the night will only know'
Obviously they have just witnessed a woman being tortured and murdered. They have done nothing to intervien mainly because they know that by doing so they will have to admit their own adultery. They have no idea why this has happened either but they do not want to find out to save themself from being caught.
'And every paper ran the story She was stripped of all her glory And they told exactly how the woman died Abandoned and forsaken Too many pills were taken And they ruled the woman's death a suicide.'
This is the interesting part, obviously after the womans murder has been made to look like suicide through drugs she is made out to be just a nohoper in the press. The question is why? It indicates that perhaps the murdered was someone of importance, perhaps a police chief or someone in government who could perhaps been with a hooker or similar. Not to important though as the song is more about the affair than the murder.
'Bound by their behavior They could have been her savior Now guilt becomes an endless debt they owe But another crime was committed And it's never been admitted Have the guilty been acquitted Lord, the night will only know.'
The couple could have saved the poor womans name, but they didn't and the reason was puerly to hide their own 'crime' the affair that they do not want exposed to keep their own little life storm free.So the cheating couple must pay with guilt forever to hide their secret.
'And every paper ran the story She was stripped of all her glory And they told exactly how the woman died Abandoned and forsaken Too many pills were taken And they ruled the woman's death a suicide.'

I believe this portion of the song refers to the woman that was in the car and that her guilt became over whelming, as a result she committed suicide.

"What i have to wonder is the woman that found them... just coincidence or was that maybe the guy's wife and they just tried to make it look like suicide?"
There are four people in the song. The people having sex in the car, who are cheating on their respective spouses. Then there's the murderer and the victim. I think those two were in a relationship, and she cheated on him, so he kills her and makes it look like a suicide. That connection isn't really stated, but it fits thematically I think. The people having the affair in the car don't come forward so the murderer is never caught.
What I want to know is what
"But another crime was committed And it's never been admitted Have the guilty been acquitted Lord, the night will only know."
is referring to.
Mu take on it was that there was a couple making out in the backseat of a car, they heard the scream and looked out to see a woman being raped. They didn’t report it and left her there. The woman survived but committed suicide later not being able to deal with the aftermath (abandoned and forsaken, too many pills were taken). The man who raped her was never found guilty of the crime and got away with it because the couple did not come forward.
"That night will live forever Their first time to lie together They were finally where desire dared them to go Both belonging to another But longing to be lovers Promising each other that the night will only know"
They're both adults, married to other people, and this is the start of their affair.
"But they would pay for their deceiving For a deadly web was weaving Why they picked that spot that evening Lord, the night will only know"
There's karma and fate here. The spot they picked at random turned out to be significant.
"And they watched her fall in silence To save their own alliance"
They watched the woman be assaulted, probably raped, and did nothing, said nothing, because they didn't want anyone to find out about their affair.
"Abandoned and forsaken Too many pills were taken"
I think she was raped, and died by suicide. I agree with earlier comments that murder in a back alley is not going to look like suicide by pills.
"Bound by their behavior They could have been her savior Now guilt becomes the endless debt they owe But another crime was committed And it's never been admitted Have the guilty been acquitted Lord, the night will only know"
Their bad decision, their sin, through luck or fate or whatever, could have led to something good. They only witnessed the crime because of their affair. They could have saved her, but instead of choosing to help, before or after the crime, they committed another crime. Not a legal one, but a moral one. They kept quiet, and placed their reputations above the other woman's life. They have to live the rest of their lives with that guilt.
[Edit: clarity]
Nobody has comminted on this song? This is a GREAT SONG, but realy not sure how to take it.
I agree with Ratanx on almost everything. I think that they were adults. The song says "both belonging to another" which to me says they were both married !
What i have to wonder is the woman that found them... just coincidence or was that maybe the guy's wife and they just tried to make it look like suicide?
First off I LOVE this song! Huge Garth fan (even named our daughter Brooke), and this is one of my all time favorites! Always been confused by the lyrics regarding the woman in the alley though... Song states:
They saw a woman bleeding Stumbling, begging, and retreating 'Til she became the victim of her foe
How does this end up being confused as a a suicide? Particularly one where, "Too many pills were taken"? This line has never made sense to me...Am I missing something that someone else could help clarify??

The word is pleading not bleeding so the killer having never touched her was able to make it look like a suicide via the pills
That night will live forever Their first time to lie together They were finally where desire dared them to go Both belonging to another But longing to be lovers
TELLS ME THEY WERE PROBABLY BOTH MARRIED AND SLIPPED OFF TO HAVE AN AFFAIR
Promising each other that the night will only know Parked on some old backstreet They laid down in the back seat And fell into the fire down below But they would pay for their deceiving For a deadly web was weaving Why they picked that spot that evening
THE SPOT BEING MENTIONED IS IMPORTANT. THAT SUGGESTS TO ME THEY DON'T KNOW THE VICTIM.
Lord, the night will only know Well within the innuendos Just outside the steamy windows The night was shattered by a woman's scream Motionless and frightened The grip of fate had tightened And with trembling hands they wiped away the steam
NO INTERPRETATION NEEDED HERE
They saw a woman pleading Stumbling, begging and retreating' Til she became the victim of her foe
IS THE FOE ANOTHER HUMAN OR THE INCREDIBLY SCREWED UP THING SHE SAW (HER CAR, HUSBAND, ECT...?)
And they watched her fall in silence To save their own alliance But the reason for the violence
MAYBE SHE HURT HERSELF? SCARFED DOWN PAIN PILLS AND OTHER SELF-DESTRUCTION
Just the night will only know And every paper ran the story She was stripped of all her glory And the told exactly how the woman died Abandoned and forsaken Too many pills were taken And they ruled the woman's death a suicide
MAYBE IT WAS A SUICIDE? MAYBE HER HUSBAND'S INFEDILITY DROVE HER CRAZY AND SHE HURT HERSELF? (I'VE KNOWN OF DEPLOYED MEMBERS COMMITTING SUICIDE OVERSEAS WHEN THEY FIND OUT THEIR SPOUSE BACK HOME IS CHEATING)
Bound by their behavior They could have been her savior Now guilt becomes the endless debt they owe
MAYBE IT WOULD HAVE NEVER HAPPENED IF THEY HADN'T HAD THE AFFAIR?
But another crime was committed And it's never been admitted Have the guilty been acquitted Lord, the night will only know
ALL PREVIOUS EXPLANATIONS, IF INDEED CORRECT, MAKE THIS LAST ONE OBVIOUS.
That night will live forever Their first time to lie together They were finally where desire dared them to go Both belonging to another But longing to be lovers Promising each other that the night will only know ++ THEY ARE BOTH CHEATING. THEY ARE PROBABLY ADULTS. HINT: THE NIGHT WILL LIVE FOREVER, BUT NOT ALL OF THE FOLLOWING PEOPLE++
Parked on some old backstreet They laid down in the back seat And fell into the fire down below ++ NO INTERPRETATION NEEDED++
But they would pay for their deceiving For a deadly web was weaving ++ THE DEBT FOR THEIR DECEIVING THAT THEY WILL PAY WILL BE STATED LATER. BUT IT‘S A DEADLY ONE++
Why they picked that spot that evening Lord, the night will only know Well within the innuendos Just outside the steamy windows The night was shattered by a woman's scream Motionless and frightened The grip of fate had tightened And with trembling hands they wiped away the steam ++ OUTSIDE A WOMAN IS SCREAMING. THE LOVERS ARE AFRAIGHT TO GET CAUGHT++
They saw a woman pleading Stumbling, begging and retreating' Til she became the victim of her foe And they watched her fall in silence To save their own alliance But the reason for the violence Just the night will only know ++ NOONE KNOWS WHY THE WOMAN WAS KILLED. BUT THERE WAS VIOLENCE. DO WE CALL A SUICIDE VIOLENCE? I DOUBT SO. SO IN MY VIEW THE WOMAN OUTSIDE WAS KILLED WITH A WEAPON TO BEAT TO DEATH. THE LOVERS IN THE CAR COULD HAVE HELPED HER. IF THEY WOULD LET HER INSIDE, OR HONKED SO OTHERS WOULD BE ALARMED++
And every paper ran the story She was stripped of all her glory And they told exactly how the woman died ++ WHO IS „THEY“? I THINK THE LOVERS TOLD THE STORY. AFTER THE MURDER IT WAS OBVIOUSLY NO LONGER POSSIBLE TO HIDE THAT THEY BOTH WERE THERE ++
Abandoned and forsaken Too many pills were taken And they ruled the woman's death a suicide ++THAT REFERS TO THE WONAN IN THE CAR. ONE OF THE LOVERS. THAT WAS ABBANDONED BY HER PARTNER AND THE LOVER OF THAT NIGHT BECAUSE THE MEMORY IS TOO PAINFUL AND IMPOSSIBLE TO BUILD A RELATIONSHIP UPON ++
Bound by their behavior They could have been her savior Now guilt becomes the endless debt they owe. ++ OBVIOUS AS STATED ABOVE++
But another crime was committed And it's never been admitted Have the guilty been acquitted ++ THE SECOND CRIME WAS THE ABSENCE OF HELP. IN GERMANY YOU CAN GET IN JAIL IF YOU DONT HELP PEOPLE IN A DEATH-NEAR SITUATION. I GUESS IT‘S THE SAME IN THE STATES++
Lord, the night will only know
++COMMENTS WELCOME++
