Blame it all on my roots
I showed up in boots
And ruined your black tie affair
The last one to know
The last one to show
I was the last one you thought you'd see there
And I saw the surprise
And the fear in his eyes
When I took his glass of champagne
And I toasted you
Said "honey, we may be through"
But you'll never hear me complain

'Cause I've got friends in low places
Where the whiskey drowns
And the beer chases my blues away
And I'll be okay
I'm not big on social graces
Think I'll slip on down to the oasis
Oh, I've got friends in low places

Well, I guess I was wrong
I just don't belong
But then, I've been there before
Everything's all right
I'll just say goodnight
And I'll show myself to the door
Hey, I didn't mean
To cause a big scene
Just give me an hour and then
Well, I'll be as high as that ivory tower
That you're livin' in

'Cause I've got friends in low places
Where the whiskey drowns
And the beer chases my blues away
And I'll be okay
I'm not big on social graces
Think I'll slip on down to the oasis
Oh, I've got friends in low places

I've got friends in low places
Where the whiskey drowns
And the beer chases my blues away
And I'll be okay
I'm not big on social graces
Think I'll slip on down to the oasis
Oh, I've got friends in low places

I've got friends in low places
Where the whiskey drowns
And the beer chases my blues away
And I'll be okay
I'm not big on social graces
Think I'll slip on down to the oasis
Oh, I've got friends in low places

I've got friends in low places
Where the whiskey drowns
And the beer chases my blues away
And I'll be okay

    My Interpretation
The song is about trying to justify belligerent indignation. This cat shows up to a wedding dressed up like an extra on Hee-Haw, and then tries to make the bride, groom and guests feel bad about themselves for having made life choices that differed from his own. With all of that charm, I can't imagine why she didn't choose to marry him instead.

this song is about a man, who's former lover is getting married "black tie affair", and he shows up to plainly say, i dont need you anymore because i have friends "in low places" who he will drink away her memory with

This is a song anyone can sing along to, we used to sing this on mission trips and it would drive our preacher crazy. And like most of Garth's songs much better live, but phenomenal either way

what does he mean when he says, 'give me an hour, and i'll be as high as that ivory tower"? Does he mean high, like as in the effect of reefer?

"querillainthemidst', I'm pretty sure the part you asked about is saying like, he'll be drunk. I love this song. It's basicly my family anthem. I hear it at EVERY wedding, family reunion & everything. It's the best song I've ever heard.
