Slow Pony Home Lyrics

It’s the second September I have known you
Four years or so ago, I rode a pony, called him “Truth”
We didn`t know the way so it took us till today to get here

And all that time, I felt just fine
I held so many people in my suitcase heart
That I had to let the whole thing go
It was taken by the wind and snow
And I still didn’t know that I was waiting
For a girl on a slow pony home

I can remember when I first saw you
You said in my photograph I looked more far away
I laughed and smiled and didn’t say “I am a bit afraid to be here.”

Setting free the anchor and looking past the shore
It’s a sea of horses on ships with no sails, no motors, no oars

Now we’re cleaning the windows between us two
Funny, you do it once, and then again, and pretty soon
the fingerprints and dust...
But I’ve begun to trust the view here.

This song seems to be about letting go of something in the past and starting something new with someone else. For some reason I get this feeling that this song is actually about steve tannen and deb talan meeting and then writing music together.

"I can remember when I first saw you You said in my photograph I looked more far away I laughed and smiled and didn’t say “I am a bit afraid to be here.”

I may be wrong, but I do know that they were intimidated of eachother at first. Eitherway, I like this song. Hey, what do you think?

I think you may be on to something, Holmes....

I really think this song is about letting so many people in that broke your heart and trust, and after so many times you've become so cynical and it's hard to trust agan. And then about slowly trusting again..."setting free the anchor and looking past the shore" Is about trying to forget about the past, testing your standards of trust, and learning to trust again.

"Its the second September I have known you Four years or so ago, I rode a pony, called him Truth We didn`t know the way so it took us till today to get here"

I think that the "pony" is a symbol for love. She'd known the guy for 2 years, but 2 years prior to that she was riding the "pony" (aka. love) with someone else who hurt her so much that she had to learn to love again.

"And all that time, I felt just fine I held so many people in my suitcase heart That I had to let the whole thing go It was taken by the wind and snow And I still didnt know that I was waiting For a girl on a slow pony home"

The whole time that she was single she thought she was fine, surrounded by friends and family that she carried in her "suitcase heart", to block out the pain of feeling alone. However, she realised it wasn't enough, she wanted love and she was waiting for herself "a girl on a slow pony home" to realise that.

"I can remember when I first saw you You said in my photograph I looked more far away I laughed and smiled and didnt say I am a bit afraid to be here."

She remembers when she first saw the guy. I thought perhaps they'd met on the internet and all he'd seen was a photograph in which she "looked more far away". She "laughs and smiles" because it's the first time she's had intentions of being with someone since her relationship before.

"Setting free the anchor and looking past the shore Its a sea of horses on ships with no sails, no motors, no oars"

She's letting her boat sail, she's not directing it especially, just letting it be free. She's letting her heart take her where it decides to, with no need for "sails, motors" or "oars".

"Now were cleaning the windows between us two Funny, you do it once, and then again, and pretty soon the fingerprints and dust... But Ive begun to trust the view here."

I think then that the song takes a shift in time. She was reflecting before and now it's the present. The last verse is a scene of a moment that they now share, something mundane like "cleaning the windows", but it is in this moment that she realises that she's "begun to trust the view here". She's ready to fall in love.

Sorry that my interpretation was so stupidly long! :)

i like to think that this song more talks about truth than intimidation

"Four years or so ago, I rode a pony, called him 'Truth'"

it's like the whole song, she's waiting for a slow pony named truth. i think what she's trying to say is that truth is very slow sometimes, but it may be worth waiting for.

i find other parts in the song that to me emphasize truth and trust, but the most obvious is "And I still didn’t know that I was waiting For a girl on a slow pony home"

I think she's describing a relationship thats developed really slowly - ''Four years or so ago, I rode a pony.....We didn`t know the way so it took us till today to get here''. "I've held so many people in my suitcase heart'' -she's had small things with other people but all along really loved him/her and now the relationship is finally ready to go. I say her cos at one point she says 'i didn't know i was waiting for a girl.....''. This song might be about two women in love but i doubt it cos i don't think the singer is and it doesn't appear to be a dominant theme.

Maybe it is about the two singers. I like to think It's about to people that met at a party but it took them ages to hook up because they both had really complicated love lives.

I love the part "i am abit afraid to be hear" - absolutely beautiful voice the way it wavers as if she's still afraid

No actually! haha i think the pony is how she feels about the guy and finally she's come up with the truth (pony) and told them how she feels. She's known him for a while but never told him exactly how she feels. I think this part:

''And all that time, I felt just fine I held so many people in my suitcase heart That I had to let the whole thing go It was taken by the wind and snow And I still didn’t know that I was waiting For a girl on a slow pony home''

Is from the guys perspective or at least what she wants the guy to say. It's almost as if this part was meant to have been sung by steve tannen but for some reason he didn't.

I think it's more like she got together with the guy and didn't realize how much he really meant to her until the slow pony of truth arrived. I dunno if anyone else noticed, but the part about the window is a really nice metaphor. Just when you get it clean, you notice all the fingerprints and smudges left. And no matter how many times you try to get them off, they stay around. So, no matter how hard she tries to forget him, his fingerprint is still on her window. Now that she's alone again, she notices how chaotic the world is, and wishes he'd come back. The pony has arrived; she knows she loves him now.

I think what she means by "I still didnt know I was waiting for a girl on a slow pony home" is that she was waiting for HERSELF to come around to realize the truth, that she loved this guy, and that it took four years. I cant make sense of the bridge though, the part about the horses on boats with no sails, motors or oars, basically no mode of propelling themselves. And why horses? Is it significant that she is not talking about slow ponies anymore?

man, last time I fell in love I was "a bit afraid to be [t]here" too. what a feeling. it's been so long, but I can still put myself there and feel it. love is a hard thing to find, so sad when it dies...
