i think the pony is how she feels about the guy and finally she's come up with the truth (pony) and told them how she feels. She's known him for a while but never told him exactly how she feels. I think this part:

And I still didn’t know that I was waiting
For a girl on a slow pony home''
Is from the guys perspective or at least what she wants the guy to say. It's almost as if this part was meant to have been sung by steve tannen but for some reason he didn't.
