I think it's more like she got together with the guy and didn't realize how much he really meant to her until the slow pony of truth arrived.
I dunno if anyone else noticed, but the part about the window is a really nice metaphor. Just when you get it clean, you notice all the fingerprints and smudges left. And no matter how many times you try to get them off, they stay around. So, no matter how hard she tries to forget him, his fingerprint is still on her window.
Now that she's alone again, she notices how chaotic the world is, and wishes he'd come back. The pony has arrived; she knows she loves him now.
