I'm not really a big fan of the music in this song, as it sounds a little weak to me. However, the lyrics do give a certain impression which I find interesting. The band Skinny Puppy has a similar style of writing lyrics, whereby words are seemingly plucked at random but actually contribute to an overall feeling. |

I thought it was about American culture in general. To me the song puts forward the idea that America has gone from being a country of innovation, equality and progress to being a country of xenophobia, litigation and decadence. Dunno if I agree with that opinion, but, to me, that seems to be what's being said in this song. |

This is a great song, very restrained. I love the last stanza especially. I've always appreciated a more minimalist sound. |

| Gary Numan – Dance Lyrics

|
What a simple, sad song. I'm not really sure if it's about anything particular - my guess is that Gary simply put these words together because he thought they sounded beautiful. However, a few of the lines seem to have some meaning.
The first is 'I could walk out and just impress myself', which to me suggests that Gary has decided that he no longer needs to perform on stage to impress thousands of fans; this album was of course released soon after Gary had announced his retirement from live music.
'I dream of rumours like a favourite pastime' - this suggests how hurt Gary was by the harsh critiques to which he was subjected by the British press, and how obsessed he later became with chasing commercial success.
The line 'This celebration makes me crawl away and hide' to me reflects his rejection of celebrity and, again, his retirement from the stage.
This is a really amazing song. In fact, the whole Dance album is my favourite effort from Numan. Although it is strange that the title track of the album is one of the few that doesn't contain the word 'dance'. |

I agree with captain hook. The instruments are what makes this song for me, as the lyrics seem pretty disjointed when you actually listen to them. It's not as hardcore as much of their previous work, but that doesn't stop this song being incredible. |

This song is very good, and probably one of Skinny Puppy's most accessible. I think it says 'mind exploding you fucking liar' though. That's just how it sounds to me. |

Hahaha I love this song! I'm listening to the original right now. There's also a 1995 remix that you can get hold of which is just as good. The Metal Rhythm version just makes me want to dance! |

I've never heard the song, but I stumbled across it at random thanks to the 'latest comment' thing. I just thought I'd say that 'conversate' is, as far as I know, a word that can be used freely in America without reproach, but an English audience would find the word cumbersome and unnecessary. We'd just stick with converse. It's an americanism (I'm not sure if that's a widely used term in America though).
A similar example would be the word 'lyricalist' used by circa survive green on page one of the comments list for this song. In England, we'd just use 'lyricist.' It seems as though American English speakers have a tendency to fill words out, if you see what I mean. |

This song is incredible. It's probably my favourite from the Exile album. The beat is slick, the guitar is dramatic, and that last verse is one of the angriest things I've ever heard. |

Oh, and I should probably explain that when the protagonist of this song is asked if he has any 'form', he is being asked whether he has a criminal record. I just thought it might be hard to work out for those who don't live in England. |

'You end on reel one'... of course! That's what he says there! I always thought it was 'You random real one' but I knew that didn't make any sense. Thank you karl for enlightening me!
Also, isn't this an odd song? The drums sound so unbalanced. And the synth parts are equally unsettling. The whole thing sounds like it's coming unhinged and could go hatstand at the drop of a hat (see what I did there?). The music matches with the lyrics too, they both give the impression of a man who's going quietly mad. |

I think it's possible that the song was intended just to be a metaphor for being lonely and then realising that a very large number of people are as lonely as you are. But I agree with Wings223... it's a little more fun to imagine it and think about a man who is actually on a desert island.
And I'm still laughing at the comment about Sting's habit of saying 'yos'. |

This song will always remind me of washing up, because that's what I was doing when I first heard it. Every time I hear it I get that hot, clean feeling in my hands. It's kind of like a Proustian rush, except really annoying. I want to just enjoy the song, not think about cleaning plates when I hear it! |

| Ian Dury And The Blockheads – Razzle in my Pocket Lyrics
| 18 years ago
|
I love this song, probably my second favorite of Dury's after 'My Old Man.' This song just captures exactly what childhood was like. Spending the holidays misbehaving, taking small victories in the world of adults, and blagging your way out of trouble. 'With the Razzle in my pocket as the second prize' is a line that, to me, just sums up how small your life is when you're a kid, but that at the time you thought everything was so big and important.
Oh and on a more intellectual note, has anyone noticed the strange rhyme scheme? It's two groups of fourteen lines, sort of like a pair of sonnets, but the rhyme scheme is nothing like the sonnets I was taught about when I was a kid. Still, Ian Dury is one great songwriter to come up with this. Definitely one of my favorite songs! |

I agree with those of you who said that Stipe seems pleased that these people are dreamers. That's just the impression I get from his voice though, and these things tend to be quite subjective. I don't know about Tony Joe White, but this song always reminds me of Johnny Cash, who 'shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die.' |

This song kinda reminds me of 'We Take Mystery To Bed.' I don't really know why, it's just the way the music goes... I keep expecting him to say 'Confiscate letters like D.E.B.' This is a pretty good one actually, the drums are very unorthodox, especially for a Numan song, but that contributes to the interesting nature of it. I wouldn't say it's one of the better tracks though, as most of the tracks on the album are really good (Oceans and Random weren't up to much, I thought). |

I'm pretty certain it's about a homosexual relationship. 'Jo the waiter held me close behind the door marked gentlemen,' 'he's very touching and so close to me.' I think if this song had been released instead of 'She's Got Claws', Numan might have continued to flourish in the music business. I've got nothing against 'She's Got Claws', but this song is a lot more danceable (if that is a word), and seems as though it would have better suited the pop-music market. Oh, and the drum break at the start is intense, I wish I could play that! |

The drumbeat in this song is superb. The spoken parts fit really well too, and I like the little touches on the piano. I really like the line 'I'm told it's called the great American lie,' that's unusually political for Numan. I suppose he's making the comment that, here in England, Christianity isn't really a defining feature in people's lives anymore, whereas in America there are many people who would consider themselves Christian. In general though I think the song is describing this nightmare world that is a theme on the Sacrifice album. Numan is writing from the point of view of a man who is haunted by God in his dreams. |

I thought it was 'little girls playing big boys games.' That's just the way I hear it though, I am very frequently wrong about this sort of thing. Isn't the guitar part cheesy in this song? Still, Gary's made worse songs than this. I think it's quite good, in a quirky sort of way. I think it's about a relationship but I've got no idea what he's actually trying to say with this song. |

| Neurosis – Enemy Of The Sun Lyrics

I think it's about the environment. As I see it, this song presents the image of what the world will be like after it's been polluted to bits. 'The sun bathes my wounds with a veil of rage' - this is describing the effects of global warming, I think. And of course it mentions the 'disrespect' shown to the environment by mankind. '...with pride and glass in our throats... they run as we laugh.' These two segments suggest that this future mankind is still defiant, denying the truth of climate change until the very last moment. Dunno about the 'Harvest their return' parts though, their meaning eludes me. |

A truly great vocal. Usually I can't stand to hear women sing but Helen Tiller's voice is so plaintive and chilling. And the piano's good too! I guess as far as a meaning behind the lyrics, this one's pretty obvious: she was emotionally hurt by a ruthless man. He just moved on to the next girl but she is convinced that one day he will succumb to guilt and be buried under the weight of his past misdeeds. Well that's the impression I got anyway. |

Wow, Pangui, that's a really original way of looking at it. I'd never have thought of the song in that way, but now you say it, it does make sense. I thought it was about being a small cog in the big machine of society... being just one person among millions of others, who are all the same. I thought the fisherman was like some sort of leader, one person who stands out from the rest, but my interpretation was a little vague. I think yours is better lol. |
