Dark Lyrics
I've been waiting here
Waiting for faith
And the word to fall.
Now the darkness comes
And I'll pray for
The end of us all.
Don't let the dark into me
We killed the angels that warned us of you
Don't let the dark into me
We raised the tower of Babel for you
Don't let the dark into me
We let the children build temples for you
Don't let the dark into me
Don't let the vengeance of Heaven be you
So pray to me, I'm the Lord's new disease,
Look down into the face of God.
Bow down and cry, I'm the black Messiah,
The one true divinity.
Kneel before my altar and drink the wine of slaughter,
Who said I'd save anyone?
So bleed for me, I need hostility
To lead the faithful and the blind.
Don't let the light shine on me
I am the poison that feeds life to you
Don't let the light shine on me
I am the demon that waits inside you
Don't let the light shine on me
I am the ghost that reminds death of you
Don't let the light shine on me
I am the darkness that crawls into you
Waiting for faith
And the word to fall.
Now the darkness comes
And I'll pray for
The end of us all.
We killed the angels that warned us of you
Don't let the dark into me
We raised the tower of Babel for you
Don't let the dark into me
We let the children build temples for you
Don't let the dark into me
Don't let the vengeance of Heaven be you
Look down into the face of God.
Bow down and cry, I'm the black Messiah,
The one true divinity.
Kneel before my altar and drink the wine of slaughter,
Who said I'd save anyone?
So bleed for me, I need hostility
To lead the faithful and the blind.
I am the poison that feeds life to you
Don't let the light shine on me
I am the demon that waits inside you
Don't let the light shine on me
I am the ghost that reminds death of you
Don't let the light shine on me
I am the darkness that crawls into you

A truly excellent song. I think if atheists had hymns, Gary Numan would write them. That line 'Kneel before my altar and drink the wine of slaughter' is probably the best rhyme I've ever heard. There isn't a line wasted in this song, and it's definitely one of my favorites.
No, this song wasn't inspired by "Dark City", it was just put onto its soundtrack.
"Dark" is in the middle part of the loose concept album "Exile" wherein a man sees a vision in a dream that shows him the truth of "God". Basically that "God" and "The Devil" are actually one and the same. In "Dark", the main character now gets the message that "God" ("The black Messiah, The one true divinity") knows The Secret is out and is coming for him.
Religious people often talk about the "Light" of God shining on them or in them. Here Gary's character refers instead to God's "Dark" spreading and shining into the ones that have bought into The Lie, and he wants no part of it.
Never seen this film, but i think this song may be inspired by 'Dark City'? I heard it's a 'visually stunning' 80's sci-fi. Gary's favourite.
"Dark City" was actually a 90s movie. It's great if you haven't seen it - it very obviously visually inspired movies like "The Matrix".
This song...on a less religious and more human level, I've always seen it as being about the innate darkness of man. The alternating choruses fear the dark and the light in turn - I see this as a comment on how man fears his own ability to harm, but is enthralled by his power.
