I could almost agree with you, except for the key lines:

But both the girl and boy were glad
Cause one kid had it worse than that

That does ascribe some meaning to the last verse.

Peter Wolf – Tragedy Lyrics 11 years ago
Peter Wolf is obscure. This has to be one of his best songs and one of the best songs that nearly everybody has not heard. This song is about heartbreak and regret (like many of his songs) and the use of a country singer's vocals to counter Peter's is just fantastic in this song.

Lady A – Need You Now Lyrics 14 years ago
To amend what I said before, actually the internal rhymes in the "A"'s in the first verse are actually internal rhymes with the A's in the second verse. That is, "memories" and "whiskey" sound similar, as do "come" and "phone." I think that particular internal rhyme was done to make what the woman is thinking seem quite similar to what the man is thinking, even though they are supposed to be saying it independently of one another.

AABB / CCC / AABB / CCC / D / CCCCC

There are also quite a few internal rhymes. All the A's and all the C's (except the last two) have an internal rhyme.

Kate Earl – Melody Lyrics 14 years ago
I play songs back to back until i got to bed

wake up by myself inside an empty room
theres no body next to mine to oooh

There is a rather depressing element to this song. The song almost seems like the theme song for the iPod generation, especially considering that it was released as a free iTunes single. Taken within that context, it seems to be about people who relate to music but can't relate to real live human beings. In other words, the "iPod Generation." I can envision somebody bopping along to their computer or iPod while listening to this song. Sort of like an iPod commercial on TV.

Taken outside this context though, I think Kate Earl was singing about music filling a particular void in her life. Whether this is a lack of a love life or something else entirely as in "There's no body next to mine," I don't know. I believe she is happily married in real life, but I've seen very little about her personal life posted online anywhere.

The lyrics claim he says "no I don't wanna fall in love," but I swear the "don't" part is not in the song. I have listened to it closely many times and I don't recognize a "don't" in there. If he is saying "no I wanna fall in love," that would change the meaning of the song. Is the "don't" really there?

Shinedown – Second Chance Lyrics 15 years ago
They should have just named this song "Halley's Comet," then I would be able to find it more easily. That's the most distinctive phrase in this song anyway. I hear that, and I go, what? Why is he singing about Halley's Comet? I searched the song by "Second Chance," and a zillion entries come up, and Shinedown's song is way down the list. Apparently, there are too many songs named "second chance." Yeah, "Halley's Comet" would have been better.

Jordin Sparks – One Step At A Time Lyrics 15 years ago
I first heard this song in my car. For some reason they dub in some rhythmic shaking/thumping sounds in this song at times and it sounds like my wheel hit a pothole. I keep getting nervous about my car when I hear this song, even though by now I know it's just the song.

I know that has nothing to do with the meaning of this song, but I think the meaning is quite positive and straightforward and doesn't really need any analysis.

Katy Perry – I Kissed a Girl Lyrics 15 years ago
For those of you who don't understand why this song is offensive to some:

Compare the lyrics of this song to the lyrics of her other song "Ur so gay" on this same album and you will start to see why people are offended. In and of itself, this song is fairly benign, but coupled with that other song "Ur so gay," yes, it's offensive.

Basically, Ur so Gay is a song about how offensive to Katy a man is who expresses gay or "metrosexual" tendencies. So the double standard is blatant.

And the music video for "I kissed a girl" speaks for itself.

Someone here mentioned that Katy never actually kissed a girl. That makes the song offensive on yet another level, because she's not writing a song from her personal experience - she's writing a song to appeal to popular tastes. Which is precisely what whoring is.

Despite it all though, I love this song because it's so catchy and Katy is hot (see album art). And I agree, you girls are so magical with your soft skin, kissable red lips, and you're hard to resist. So there.

And men don't actually like real lesbians. We like bi-curious women or our idealized version of what we think lesbians do as shown to us in porn videos. Which I think Katy Perry's video is actually satirizing. I hope...

Katy Perry – If You Can Afford Me Lyrics 15 years ago
A cursory listen to this song makes it sound like she's setting herself up to be a whore. That she only cares about a man for what he can spend on her. But after reading the lyrics and listening closer, she is saying that the currency she is looking for is a good heart. Still, with the album art that comes with the CD, you'd think she's whoring herself out...

Peter Gabriel – I Don't Remember Lyrics 16 years ago
Interesting song from Peter Gabriel. His songs tend to fall into two categories:

Emotional songs that often tell the story of people in despair (this type of song, "Don't Give Up," "Solsbury Hill," "Mercy Street," etc.) and often make you think or say something about humanity.

Songs about sex ("Sledgehammer," "Steam")

So to say this song is about a refugee is interesting, but I wonder what he is really trying to say in this song. Maybe I am reading too much into this, but it certainly isn't one of his sex songs.

Tears for Fears – Everybody Wants to Rule the World Lyrics 16 years ago
You fools who claim there is a homosexual message in this song... WTF?!

Just because a group consists of two men doesn't mean that they are homosexuals. And since when were Curt and Roland "open homosexuals," as one poster states? Read the biographies of TFF or either person, you fools, before you post such a thing.

Are Walter Becker and Donald Fagen from Steely Dan gay because they are songwriting partners? How about Daryl Hall and John Oates? (OK bad example there, their mode of dress was a little "ambiguous" back in the day... but you get the idea). Now let's get back to the song people.

It's great that I see many interpretations of this song, all of which hold water. It could be about nuclear war and World War 3, or it could be about how individual desires and manipulation of them cause war. These interpretations are two sides of the same coin actually. This song really is timeless and holds such water due to its flexibility of interpretation and application.

James Blunt – I'll Take Everything Lyrics 16 years ago
Loose Tongue, I am not sure what is Communist or Marxist in this song. To me, this song is (a rather bleak) call to make the most of one's life. I am agnostic, but this song does not even bother me. He is calling on a Holy Spirit to guide him, and I understand that when people feel desperate or have unanswered questions, they will turn to God to guide them. I completely understand.

You could say that there is a bit of nihilism in his emphasis that we all turn to dust. Really, he says that our BODIES turn to dust, not ourselves. Again, I am agnostic, so I am conflicted regarding feelings about whether there is a soul that is separate from the body. That is the main reason I am not atheist! But this song is deep and beautiful to me and makes me think. Isn't that what good music is all about?

Tears for Fears – Break It Down Again Lyrics 16 years ago
"...so you have to be gay to write a song about gay rights?"

Technically, no, but how many songs about women's rights do you know that are penned by men? Exactly. Songs about women's rights, a woman defending herself from a man, etc. are nearly always penned by women. (Mainly, Tori Amos :-P)

Think about it. But no I don't really see the gay rights interpretation, that was my point. It does make sense that he is writing about Curt, but I guess the gay rights interpretation could spring up by writing a song about another man.

Although I see where you are coming from, frogballs, and pretty much agree with your assessment of the song, I would not say that most musicians are uneducated. That is of course offensive to musicians and poets everywhere, but just isn't true. A lot of the great lyricists are very world-wise, if not formally educated. Formal education has a way of crushing creativity, which is why so many good lyricists and poets have maintained their creativity BECAUSE they did not pursue higher education.

That being said, this song is NOT very profound :-)

Lily Allen – Not Big Lyrics 16 years ago
Also, concerning "Knock 'Em Out":

I know this might technically be the wrong place to write about it, but the subject has already been brought up here so here goes. It takes a LOT of courage for a man to ask a woman out at a bar. She should be flattered that he got up the nerve to, unless he is absolutely wasted. He thought that you were more attractive than other women there. Take it as a damn complement, even if you are not interested, rather than embarrassing the hell out of him.

Again, Lily, your integrity is lacking.

submissions
Lily Allen – Not Big Lyrics 16 years ago
"OMG, stollhardy, nothing about "Knock 'Em Out" is slutty at all! It's about how girls are constantly propositioned by guys even when we aren't asking for it!"

There are worse things in the world than being asked out. Lots of women twenty years older than Lily would kill to have her "problem" of always being asked out. It's more like take the songs TOGETHER: I mean, would you complain about being propositioned all the time if you didn't hang out at bars all the time? And why WOULD you hang out at bars all the time? That's the question.

If I took her lyrics literally, it would mean that she hangs out at bars all the time, meets guys, and bashes them publicly when they can't perform.

She's not just a slut, she's an asshole. Sorry, Lily, grow up.

Mika – Big Girl (You Are Beautiful) Lyrics 16 years ago
"Oh and dudes get off his dick. Just cause he's cutesy and emotional doesn't mean he's gay."

Straight men are not flamboyant, sing constantly in falsetto, etc. TRUST me. He is beyond just cutesy and emotional. Plus, out of all his songs, I hear zero sexualization in any of his lyrics, or speaking of women in a romantic context, which just about any songwriter who is straight does, at least in some of their songs. I mean, look at REM - Michael Stipe didn't necessarily seem gay, but he NEVER wrote about love. And Stipe finally admitted that he WAS gay, and that he has always struggled with it. So he was a closet case!

It's obvious. It sounds like a song written more toward his female friends to give them a confidence boost, rather than someone who has a sexual or romantic interest in big women. But it just does not sound sincere in any event.

Oh, and I prefer take-out now too, or making my own food, which often tastes better.

The whole ritual of being served in American restaurants is overrated and over-expensive. Anyway, I digress, but yeah... give me some fucking change, and next time I eat it will be Mexican or Chinese take-out :-P

Live – Waitress Lyrics 16 years ago
Yes, the "change" is a loaded term in this song. But I always thought this was a song about a guy waiting for his waitress to give him some change so he could leave a tip and leave the restaurant! At least when I scream (in my thoughts only) "GIVE ME SOME FUCKING CHANGE!", it is usually because the waitress took my money and is taking forever to give it back. Which is why, nowadays, I both rarely eat out and just take my credit card to the host station so I don't have to deal with this awkward aspect of eating out :-P

Live – White, Discussion Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is a slow burn to a boil. The lyrics are great too and go along so well with the music - they aren't about anything concrete or a definite subject matter, but just do a great job to convey the mood of fighting, war, and possibly, the end of the world. The song title "White, discussion" is a bit of a mystery. Any thoughts on that, and the comma?

An interesting note is that the album cover to "Throwing Copper" is a painting by Peter Howson. I did a bit of research about him and his art works are quite in line with Live's music - full of angst, apocalyptic imagery, and religious themes. If you think the album cover is and Ed Kowalski's lyrics are intriguing, I would suggest checking out Peter Howson's works too - it's shocking, great stuff.

Tom Petty – House In The Woods Lyrics 16 years ago
What's he going to do but make love with his girl, if he ain't got a neighbor for 9 or 10 miles, right? That's pretty much all this song really means.

The beauty in the song really is the instrumentation and the solos. The song is a bit tedious (some more improv and flourishes would make this song a killer track), but for some reason I can't get enough of it.

Oh and I thought it sounded more like a Heartbreakers song, not a Petty solo. Sure enough, in the album credits, it's Benmont Tench on piano an Mike Campbell on guitars. I guess that Tom petty is playing Petty royalty games with his band members, eh?

Vienna Teng – Whatever You Want Lyrics 16 years ago
"she is a dress
wearing a face
in the doorway
opening her arms out to you"

That is my personal favorite excerpt in the song. Great imagery. Now that I think about it, LoveLark, the poetry in this song is real great too. A line like "no detectable ambitions/a model of efficiency, far as you can see" is a great example of an internal rhyme between "AMBITION" and "EFFICIENC-y" with the full word efficiency rhyming with "SEE." There are probably numerous other examples that can be picked apart but just a casual look at the lyrics does amaze me. The song's lyrics are also easy to understand and the language is still grammatically correct :-)

Mika – Big Girl (You Are Beautiful) Lyrics 16 years ago
Tigerstripes,

I think that, when he says "big girls," he does indeed mean BIG girls. Look at the album liner notes and the picture for this song. Now he probably didn't draw it, but he finalized it, so he sure does mean BIG girls.

I mean, comparing a big girl to a big balloon? That isn't just "more flesh on their bones than Nicole Ritchie." And while "curves in all the right places" is positive, the big balloon bit just plain isn't. Plus I do think he's really just aiming for a feel-good vibe on this song; I do not think these lyrics are very sincere for someone who REALLY likes a girl big.

Personally, I think he's gay, and this song is just one sign out of many on this album. And yes, that always seems to follow Mika around whenever he is talked about, but that's OK. And of course it's fine to be gay, but to talk about what "real men" want in a girl -- it really isn't his place.
