Waitress Lyrics

Come on baby, leave some change behind
She was a bitch, but I don't care
She brought our food out on time
And wore a funky barette in her hair

Come on baby, leave some change behind
She was a bitch, but good enough to leave some change
Everybody's good enough for some change
The girl's got family
She needs cash to buy aspirin for her pain
Everybody's good enough for some change

We all get the flu, we all get AIDS
We've got to stick together
After all, everybody's good enough for some change
Some fucking change!

Well obviously this is like a guy out with his girlfriend and she doesn't want to leave a tip. But the guy is like, "Come on, just give her some money." Basically he's saying we all should all look out for eachother. But I note tension between the couple too. That's why the guy says "some fucking change!" in a pissed off way. And he said everbody's good enough for some change, maybe looking at the girlfriend and thinking, "even YOU are good enough for some change", although he's probably not sure why really. I know I could be way off, but that's just what I think of when I hear it. ps...I LOVE LIVE!!!!!!!!!!!

Not the interpretation I would have come up with, but all in all... I like it! It works for me, which is one of the beautiful things about Live's music. So much room to make each song your own.

I think he's saying no matter how much of a bitch she was, you should leave her a tip because she needs it.

In the larger scheme, it could mean we should get past our pettiness and help each other out a little more often, by simple acts of kindness, because we all have bad days, we all get sick, etc. Put yourself in someone's shoes sometimes, try to see beyond the bad and look for good stuff (she was a bitch but brought out our food on time).

You are absolutely right. This song is very literal and straight-forward. I don't like it when people over-analyze a lyric when there is absolutely no call to do so. Waitresses need money even when they're having a crappy day, full stop.

Has anybody ever thought that the word "change" might not necessarily mean money? It might mean that everyone, no matter how bad a person they seem to be, has always got some good in them and they can turn themselves around... Whether the voice in the song means his girl, because she doesn't give a tip, or the waitress, because she's tired of her job.

People treat waitresses like shit. My pet peeve is when the food is cooked poorly (by the cook), and they take out their anger on the waitress (not leaving some change for her). Everybody's good enough for some change. Some change from the way people treat them. Also, the waitress was a bitch... and he thought maybe she feels sick from the flu. Maybe she's sick from AIDS. Now I feel like crying..... great song :)

I love this song so much...it is so catchy that I once listened to this song over and over for an hour!

Personally, Helena....i dont think you could be any more wrong, i in no way see a couple thing here and by change he isnt saying "leave this lady change" plain and simple....change in this song does mean we can all use some extra pocket change, but it also is a metaphor for actual change, a change in where were going with our lives, or a change with our current situation, and everyone deserves and/or needs some change even people like bill gates sitting atop his vast mountain of computer product monopoly

I believe (and please don't take offence, this is NOT directed at anyone in particular), that we ALL have our good and bad days and sometimes, if we can get away with ignoring decent mutual respect for others (ie. Service providers, people with little recourse to retaliation etc.) we may tend to take our frustrations out on people whom we have absolutely no idea how they may be feeling at that time, nor thier personal situation/s! This song speaks VOLUMES of the modern human "condition" and self centred feelings we choose to succumb to in our own moments of fear and weakness, instead venting at some of the very people who are not able to afford the services they render to us! I have made this error many a time before and (not always) on occasion, have returned to my "victim" and apologised for my poor display of temper and lack of humanity! I can only hope that my efforts to undo my wrongs have made a difference in the lives of the people I have offended! After all, isn't forgiveness as close to love as any other human emotion!?

@Johnathan Christie Footnote, I realise that failing to leave a tip is NOT directly confrontational, but nonetheless, a passive aggressive way of saying "you are not good enough"!, unless you at least explain that you cannot afford a tip at the time! Just my own observation.

Oh, and I prefer take-out now too, or making my own food, which often tastes better.

The whole ritual of being served in American restaurants is overrated and over-expensive. Anyway, I digress, but yeah... give me some fucking change, and next time I eat it will be Mexican or Chinese take-out :-P

Yes, the "change" is a loaded term in this song. But I always thought this was a song about a guy waiting for his waitress to give him some change so he could leave a tip and leave the restaurant! At least when I scream (in my thoughts only) "GIVE ME SOME FUCKING CHANGE!", it is usually because the waitress took my money and is taking forever to give it back. Which is why, nowadays, I both rarely eat out and just take my credit card to the host station so I don't have to deal with this awkward aspect of eating out :-P
