the spirit of a 6½ year stairway... i can see how one would get that from it. i always saw a bit of a satirical element in it myself, though a different way. it's kindof a fit, YOU JUST DON'T GET IT, wrapped in bubble gum punk. it's a whole package put together flawlessly. i love Jessicka's voice in this song. |

i just about got into a super battle with someone cuz they insisted aqualung was a pedophiliac. i'm like mannnn you're taking this far too literally you need to get past the "frilly panties" bit and listen more closely. whenever i listened to aqualung i always thought of a homeless man back in the victorian times (think bloomers -frilly panties). i've not had opportunity to listen to the album in its entirety for over a decade, but i guess something stuck with me somewhere if that's what i pulled from it. i'll have to see about getting another copy of that album so i can meditate on its concept. |

| Emilie Autumn – Heard It All Lyrics | 16 years ago |
|
it makes me think of religion, specifically the types that like to proselytize. everyone wants to make it seem easier than it is, say that they have all the answers, that they can solve all the problems, etc. just a few of the lyrical cues that make me think this: "there's too many hands touching where i stand and i can't fall because you'll try and catch me, never let me go" -when things go less than perfect there will be someone to say just why their path is perfect and why you should follow them. "wasn't thinking to listen to me when i said..." "when you shut your mouth tell me what you hear" -they believe they're right that they won't quiet down long enough to maybe hear something different, that what they believe is easy isn't so simple. "do you think of me when i'm nowhere near" -do you really give thought to the 'fallen' when they aren't in front of you, or is that just something you use to convince me you really care? "somebody called me a paranoid angel from on the other side of the wall" -basically they've separated themselves from the rest of the world yet they continue to claim that they have all the answers to the problem, but really they're just on the other side of the wall they've built. "you don't think i know, i've heard it all and so you'll never scratch my skin" -pretty self-explanatory. no matter how they phrase it, she's heard all the lines before and isn't going to fall into it. |

wouldn't it be "go on if it makes you soar" (fly) as opposed to "go on if it makes you sore" (hurting) considering she's talking about being the one that's getting hurt. this song makes me think of the bully mentality, knocking others down to make yourself feel better. |

|
basically what i see is that in the verses she's saying she doesn't want to be his crutch, his band-aid, she doesn't want carry him, basically is not interested in being the sole solution to all his problems. the chorus, the first part, tells me that she's taken to have no concern for his boundaries because she already knows he'll allow her to overstep them. the mind the empty bottles line says to me that she's got her own issues to deal with, and she concludes by saying she can't and won't devote her life to solving his problems. i definitely agree with the co-dependency and reciprocation interps. |

i saw this thing on the history channel about the goth wars. back when they were fleeing the huns they asked the romans for asylum. the romans granted it, to an extent, only allowing the strong and healthy ones asylum while the sick, elderly and young were left behind to die. the romans had promised farmland, but when food rations were low they sent the goths out on a meaningless quest, causing their numbers to wane even more. they had intended to use the barbarian tribes to fight for their purpose, but after such a betrayal the goths wouldn't stand for it, and so they rose up and rebelled against rome, sparing no man, woman or child. that was the first goth war. i can't say for sure that's what the song is about, but whenever i listen to it, the song is called to mind. |

| Emilie Autumn – I Don't Care Much Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
this is a song from the musical "cabaret" source: http://www.geocities.com/emcee_lulu/care.html "The song is a reaction to Sally wanting to go back to the Kit Kat Klub while Cliff is trying to stop her. The Emcee is luring her in, but Cliff wants to take her ignorant, partying self away from Berlin. Cliff finally realizes that the world is falling apart, particularly in the Weimar Republic. Sally wants to pursue her "career," and can't stand the idea of being controlled by anything, unless it furthers her as a star." |

| Emilie Autumn – Swallow Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
to add, here's a quote about the label experience from ms. autumn herself, from an article with the Musical Discoveries website "But things deteriorate rapidly when another writer is flown in, another arranger is flown in, and suddenly my songs don't sound like mine anymore, and my violin is being thinned out because the producers wholeheartedly believe that the general public is "threatened" by any reference to what could be seen as "classical." Of course, I balk, and where I was once treated like a princess, I'm now dealt with as a rebellious ingrate who has to be kept in line with constant monitoring and excessive restraints." |

| Emilie Autumn – Swallow Lyrics | 17 years ago |
|
given the content of the verses, i think it's about her leaving her record label. reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emilie_Autumn In the past, Autumn was signed to a major label, but as they took more and more control over her work, she left and formed her own record label, Traitor Records. ******************** the interp (this will be a bit lengthy) verses: "i'll tell the truth all of my songs are pretty much the fucking same" --it's a nasty habit of the record companies to try to force their artists in changing their sound to suit more commercial needs. ms. autumn is retaliating in frustration, how this has turned her songs into nothing but carbon copies of themselves. "i'm not a faerie but i need more than this life so i became this creature representing more to you than just another girl" --she came to them because she needed to do more with her creativity. "and if i had the chance to change my mind i wouldn't for the world" --while she's not too fond of the situation, she does acknowledge it as a stepping stone and she has no regrets "i don't want to be a legend well that's a gd lie i do to say i do this for the people i admit is hardly true" --record label attempting to keep her around "we'll make you a legend!" and any other empty promises. she throws her hands up in the air and says that's not what she wants - well it is, but she would prefer to be a legend by her own merits, rather than by spoonfeeding the same b.s. everyone else in the mainstream does. "you tell me everything's alright as though it's something you've been through you think this torment is romantic well it's not, except to you" --the record company assuring her some more, and she retaliates by saying this is something you create for your own amusement, it's not something you're forced to deal with refrain/bridge: "twenty years sinking slowly" --the record companies have been a slow decline for quite some time, and she's not interested in going down with them "can i trust you? but i don't want to" --can she trust that given time she will be allowed more creative freedom? it's not a chance she's willing to take. "low tide and high tea the oysters are waiting for me if i'm not there on time i'll send my emissary" --she's got a decision to make, and her fans (oysters) are waiting. if there's a delay because of the situation she'll let them know "if i photoshop you out of every picture i could go quietly but would that do any good" --she's attempting to make a clean break, wash her hands of it, but doubts are springing up; has the damage already been done? "will it hurt, no it won't, then what am i so afraid of? filthy victorians they made me what i'm made of the brighter the light the darker the shadow" --breaking free and doing it on your own is a big, scary step, especially when you're not so well established yet. she's pulling herself up and getting the courage to do what needs to be done, which is break away and continue on her own. "i don't need a minder i've made up my mind go away" --every empty promise and hollow statement is lost on her, she doesn't need to hear, she's set on the course. chorus: "i will swallow if it will help my sea level go down" --i will take this risk if it means more creative freedom. "but i'll come back to haunt you if i drown" --'yeah, sure, i'll be back if it doesn't work out. whatever.' |

|
okay i know i'm responding to an old post ***************** posted by Nymphelyn on 09-02-2006 @ 10:41:50 AM con‧cu‧bine –noun 1. a woman who cohabits with a man to whom she is not legally married, esp. one regarded as socially or sexually subservient; mistress. "Basically its about vampire whores." ****************************** um, no. concubine doesn't equal whore, read your definition again. a concubine is basically half a step down from wife, a whore is someone with no moral compass that will screw you for her gain. i think the song is about vampires in the literal sense, yes. i'm seeing the metaphor as embracing the darkness within ourselves, hence the concubine (binding yourself to it). i definitely see a major elizabeth balthory reference in there. the catholic church goes with the literal or metaphorical interpretation, as the catholic church is the most prominent of the christian sects, of course it would see demons and walking dead as bad. the metaphorical is of course the religion looking down on anything deviating from the books. they don't need the guilt, they know. it could also be a suicide attempt. |

by LyvingDeadDoll on 10-12-2007 @ 07:04:58 AM "I feel like it's about depression or something like BPD." out of pure curiosity, i'm wondering why bi-polar disorder came to mind? i agree, though, i definitely get a depression vibe from. ''it's all coming back to me" perhaps a spot of post trauma memories? "it's hard to forget what they say to me" -it's in ones nature to take things personally and internalize things when in a depressed state. "all this meaningless direction feels like it pulls me away" -feeling pulled down "breeze is just an unfamiliar sound, to me" -breeze is a soft wind. it's unusual when you feel like you're in the middle of a storm. i think the rest was summed up by lyvingdeaddoll: ''it's about just feeling like the weight of the world is crushing you.'' |

| The Birthday Massacre – Under The Stairs Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
perhaps she's talking to an abuser who delights too much in harming her. and she's telling him he won't be so happy when he goes too far. when she's dead he won't be able to hurt her anymore. "you're too young for your age, i feel sorry for you 'cause it's such a shame" --the abuse, the bully mentality, it's an immature way of thinking and living. "nothing here has changed maybe you should go and find someone else to blame" --the abuse is perhaps his way of dealing with a life that hasn't gone his way, and she's saying it's time to move on 'cause what he's doing isn't fixing it. maybe under the stairs is where he keeps her, or where she hides from him. "no one cares if i'm dead" is a common thought in the abused, which tends to be why they don't leave, because they don't believe they have anywhere to go or that anyone cares. |

| The Birthday Massacre – Red Stars Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
it reminds me of those people that cut to be cool. when i was in school i met too many people like that, and i still meet people like that, who cut themselves because it's a cool thing to do, and that ''coolness" takes away from the people who cut due to the fact that they have emotional issues and in their desperation use it as a coping mechanism. kids who cut to look cool serve the purpose to reinforce the belief that self injury is an action to get attention, rather than a cry for help. red star = scars, self injury steal it = taking away from the emotion behind it can't let go/conceal it = first part would be the making of the ''red star" while the second part is of course the action of hiding it, as is a common thing with self injurers ''You give it. We take it You build it. We break it. You suddenly erase it. You feel it. We fake it." makes me think of how the ''we" is seeing the "you" suffering, and taking it to make it their own. "you feel it we fake it" - you're hurting, we're using that to look cool. "you suddenly erase it" makes me think of the isolation the person is feeling. the verses really tip me off more than anything, especially "Best of cruel intentions Binding what they fail to mention" -the way the imitators take away from the people really feeling it. they do it to be cool, but in reality it is cruel. what they fail to mention is that they aren't really feeling this whereas someone else is. "No truth, all pretension Raise your hand to get attention" -showing off the scars "Wasted education Celebrating imitation" - letting the important things go in favour of the sheep mentality i.e. concerning yourself more with being cool and following the crowd, rather than letting yourself grow as a person. "Misplaced admiration Speaking for a generation" --self injury is not a thing to admire, yet people still do and still see it as cool. i see it more in high school kids than anyone. **** i'm picturing someone meeting them and showing off their cuts and scars as though it's the cool thing to do. it's how a lot of the showing off is done, and it tends to get under the skin of the people who si as a coping mechanism. |

| The Birthday Massacre – Falling Down Lyrics | 18 years ago |

i don't think it's necessarily a romantic relationship, but there's a relationship that's been broken due to deception, like eyelinerlove pointed out. --- ''Your hands are always reaching out of favor. Your kind are only good for bad behavior. Your mouth was never one to trust. You're always speaking out, Falling far behind, Falling out of line." --that makes me think of deception, especially the ''your kind are only good for bad behaviour/your mouth was never one to trust/falling out of line" part, like this person lies a lot, or enjoys starting trouble way too much. Despite your lack of pride. You wore your imperfections well. Dignified. Spend your time alone. Trace your footsteps home. ''Farewell, This blackened eye. Your learned your lessons falling down. Far behind, and tracing footsteps home. -- ''Farewell, This bitter tongue. You spoke your lessons falling down, talking out, And breaking silence." --the speaker has taken to naming them bitter tongue and blackened eye basically because of the way they've hurt others. probably a manner of bullying, the type that causes trouble and knocks people down as a means of nullifying their own shortcomings. i mostly get that impression from this line: ''Despite your lack of pride. You wore your imperfections well. Dignified." ''Despite the harm you've done, You swallowed your rejection well. Amplified. Sing your song alone. Trace your footsteps home." -- ''You learned your lessons/You spoke your lessons falling down" --most likely it all came back to the dishonest person and she's saying that they took it rather well, which isn't common for those types. -- that's just my impression |

i just thought of something, and i think it makes more sense than what i originally wrote. i'm thinking of about 6½ years ago when i went to an open casket funeral for a friend. i remember how very different and unreal she looked, like a mannequin in that casket. it made me think when he's saying ''hey skin like a doll you're no friend of the family" he's rejecting this thing that looks like her but in fact isn't. the second verse ''takes her hand, kisses her cheek. she's a doll oh yeah she's his spitting image" perhaps the father saying goodbye, or a brother. she's no longer her, just a body, a doll, lying there. |

| Nine Inch Nails – Zero-Sum Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
in the context of the album, i think this is the point where trent's recognising a destroyed world, and shamed that we had done this to the world ourselves. the power-greedy in the storyline actually believed they could rule the world and mold it into what they wanted. the people that followed did so without openly questioning what it is they were advocating. the ones who stood by are just as guilty for doing nothing to stop. imo the ''zeros and ones" represents the aforementioned people. the 0/1 being a reference to binary code, basically they just allowed themselves to be part of the machine (bystanders and fighters) or built the machine (the government of the story). |

| Nine Inch Nails – Big Man with a Gun Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
Admano: ''Most of you people are idiots. [diatribe]" --i do realise this an old post i'm responding to. nevertheless: fuck you snob. as mrselfdestruct pointed out, it changes depending on the context you take it in. there are a few of the songs on TDS that could be taken out of the context of the album (e.g. march of the pigs, heresy, hurt, to name a few) and big man with a gun is one of them. in its own context it's definitely trent taking a stab at the people who use force and intimidation to prove they're big shots. glorification of violence. in the context of the album i see it as the character breaking to the point where he wants to either 1. gain some manner of control by any means 2. spread the misery. perhaps both. i realise it's ironic but i invariably skip this song. takes me to bad places. i do know he and tori met around that time and wonder if maybe her experience was part of the inspiration as well. i remember reading something about him saying little earthquakes had a permanent spot in his cd player for a long time. |

| Nine Inch Nails – And All That Could Have Been Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
i love this song, the music is beautiful and the way he sings it is just heartbreaking. the song makes think of someone who's very depressed to the point where he's completely lost himself and the world around him. at this point he just wants to go away. he's pushed everyone away and now he's alone. people had tried to help him but he didn't allow it to happen (i know you tried to rescue me//didn't let anyone get in) and later on in the song it is suggested he did this because he felt he didn't deserve the help (i am tainted//and happiness and peace of mind were never meant for me). there's that pang of regret as he realises that he's hurt someone who meant the world to him. things could've been different had he chosen not to push them away. |
|
| Nine Inch Nails – Hurt Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
this will be long... there's a deep depression in that song, the sadness is chilling. the song is basically despair. to break it down: ***** ''i hurt myself today to see if i still feel i focus on the pain the only thing that's real" --i always took this as self-mutilation. pretty self explanatory. a depressive state tends to come with a sense of detachment and in desperation it's not uncommon to cause physical harm in order to prove to the self that you're real, that you're still there. ''the needle tears a hole, the old familiar sting" --can be taken two ways: the sharp object that he's hurting himself with (not necessarily a reference to heroin, just a sharp object) or the proverbial injection of whatever has gotten him to this point. ''try to kill it all away, but i remember everything" --he's trying to let go of everything. what's hurting, what's making him feel low. but it's continuing to drag him down. can't forget it. ''what have i become? my sweetest friend everyone i know goes away in the end" --things seem to always turn out the same. in the end it's only him. he feels alone. (more on that in a bit) ''you could have it all - my empire of dirt" --this makes me think of perspectives and expectations. people are looking at him like he's got so much, like life's so great. but in reality it doesn't mean anything. ''i will let you down, i will make you hurt" --more on expectations. no-one's perfect, everybody falls. he's no exception. ''i wear this crown of shit upon my liar's chair" --more on perspectives. seen as this great thing, but in reality he's the king of nothing. the liar's chair perhaps signifying the way he attempts to present himself as okay when he's not. ''full of broken thoughts i cannot repair" --the depression again. he doesn't want to feel this, but he can't make it stop. ''beneath the stains of time, the feelings disappear" --sinking deeper into the depression, until nothing's left but the sorrow, the numbness. ''you are someone else, i am still right here" --along with the bridge (everyone i know goes away) the depression makes you feel so alone. like the last person on earth, and everyone else is just a ghost. you're left with only you, feeling this way, while everyone slips away. nature of the beast. ''if i could start again a million miles away i would keep myself i would find a way" --basically the wish to go back and fix where things got broken so he wouldn't have to be lost in the despair. to do it all over again, right this time. ***** it all goes hand in hand, the entire album. i think the song ''the downward spiral" was more a thought process rather than an action, and ''hurt" was the actual action. the entire album is the systematic breakdown, falling. you'd have to look at it all as a whole before breaking it down. each song is a development leading up to the end. |

makes me think extension of ''virginia" like ms. virginia laid herself down and betrayed the land, she can't remember her name.. | Tori Amos – Sweet Dreams Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
delirium wasn't based on tori, though neil has acknowledged they are a lot alike. neil and tori met , back in 1991, shortly before little earthquakes was released. at this time a game of you had been published, as well as a few other shorts that included del, and her character had already been established and developed. the story, according to how tori told it: she had read the doll's house and loved it, wanted to incorporated in a song, so she wrote in ''tear in your hand." a mutual friend had given the demo to neil saying something to the effect of ''this is from a friend of mine, it's really good. don't sue her." neil loved the demo and gave tori a call, saying she should take it to a record company, which was interesting timing since she had actually been wrapping up the album. and thus they met. in ''brief lives" neil made the addition of the song in the comic before publication, and they've been bouncing ideas off each other since. neil, however, did base the tree in his novel ''stardust" off of tori (hence the line in horses ''will you find me if neil makes me a tree") and there's some speculation that door from ''neverwhere" is based on tori as well (though as far as i know that's never been confirmed). endless nights was penned after the sandman series ended, and i wouldn't doubt that neil did use a couple tori songs for inspiration. as for ''sweet dreams" i love the song. i always took it as corruption as well as putting someone in their place i.e. someone who sees the world with judgmental eyes whilst denying the ugliness within themselves. i also love the alternate version as well (2nd verse is different) and it would go along with urbangriever's interpretation. --john jim joe hanging on to the politician jane's a pretty thing but so is the rap about the dream you got for the american but the lie lie lie you tell for the bigger businessman-- they got the earth in a sling they got the world on her knees they even got the zipper between their teeth |

| Evans Blue – A Cross and a Girl Named Blessed Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
this song has grown to be one of my favourites. listening to it i've come to think he's talking to/about the same person. ''there's a pretty girl somewhere with a pretty name//but i can never let you know how much this means" --somewhere in there is the girl he fell in love with, but she's grown so embittered he can't even reach her anymore. goes along with the love/hate bit ''she says i love you... say i hate you for tonight" --they're acknowledging that the love is still there, though they both know it isn't. contradiction is showing they're starting to accept that the love is lost. "she wears a butterfly on her wrist..." ''i wear god's name upon my wrist..." --the love in the relationship as opposed to- "...but she might as well cut its head off" ''...but she might as well tear my skin off" --the deterioration of said love to the hostility. ''i swear we'll end this war, we both know it wasn't worth fighting for" --this is him acknowledging that there will be no effort in saving the relationship because there's nothing there to save. ''...the wrong direction..." --she's saying that if he chooses to do this he'll be making a bad choice. his rebuttal is that she needs to consider that she's made bad decisions herself. which in itself goes along with ''...the ghost inside" --i'm actually seeing this as depression and/or self injury. we've all got demons to deal with and it seems instead of controlling them she's allowing them to control her. that's what i'm getting from it. |

| Toadies – Little Sin Lyrics | 18 years ago |

| Toadies – Jigsaw Girl Lyrics | 18 years ago |
|
hmmm, i'm not understanding how the conclusion that she was cut up got reached. i'm inclined to agree with Destructingbeauty, she left him ("before your love petered out.") and he's holding onto her stuff. --love letters --blouse --lock of hair --photograph these are the pieces in the ''jigsaw girl" and he puts them together so he can keep her close. ''once i bring you back again" --when they're together again. they're heavy into the obsession bit, but i'm not seeing anyone getting cut up in the song. simply the fact that he refuses to move on. |

i always took it to be more literal. life can be pretty overwhelming sometimes and we all deal with it in different ways. a lot of people are looked down upon for their escapism, be it indulgence or fantasy. they're often seen as crazy and tend to be avoided. there's a bit of that sneer at being condescended. i remember when i lost my mind//there was something so pleasant about that place//even your emotions had an echo//in so much space --going crazy in order to survive in a crazy world i.e. finding that escape and when you’re out there, without care//yeah i was out of touch//but it wasn’t because i didn’t know enough//i just knew too much --the real world in all its unpleasantness. he's seen/experienced things that he would like to wish never happened. does that make me crazy//possibly --he's conceding himself to others' views. this tone is more content; he enjoys the escape and it's what keeps him moving on and now that you are having the time of your life//well think twice//that’s my only advice come on now, who do you, ...who do you think you are?//hahaha, bless your soul//you really think you’re in control? --a rebuttal to all the people who treat him as anathema. his coping mechanisms are viewed as crazy and he's basically saying you've got your demons just the same ''you really think you're in control?" i think you're crazy//just like me --you have your view i have mine, but we both have our vices my heroes are at the heart//to the life I wanna live//and all i remember, is thinking//i wanna be like them mmhmm//ever since I was little//ever since i was little it looked like fun//and as no coincidence i’ve come//and i can die when i’m done --more escapism. heros are those in the world around us that make it worth living in. whether it's the guy in the comic, teacher, etc. it's a spirit you aspire to. however it happens we all end up the same so we all have to cope. Maybe I’m crazy Maybe you’re crazy Maybe we’re crazy Probably --we've all got things to cope with, and we all do it in different ways. the moral of this story ''normal" and ''crazy" are very arbitrary terms. |

i love this song it is by far my favourite one of theirs. the guitars are very haunting. a lot of interesting interpretations, i tend to agree with the people that mention it could be about a loss. the frustration and sadness along with the guitars does kind of make me think of a friend i lost . it does have a very ''gloomy sunday" feel to it, though a little more aggressive. breakdown: in the middle of a house, in the middle of nowhere bodies glide from room to room: --this makes me think of depression, how you just go through the motions. where you are and what you do doesn't really matter, you're just here and you're doing this. i hate these walls, they speak to me: --he's tormented by the loss. perhaps because he feels guilty about what happened. ''hey skin like a doll you're no friend of the family": --makes me think of a suicide note. when i went through my own depression i called myself 'the puppet' because that's how i felt. perhaps there was a suicide note and that is what it said (or boiled down to) catch that light, it falls in subtle patterns crowds in and tells them when their time is up and when it's over: --oracles. he's a bit traumitised from the loss, and trying to look for meaning and sense in everything around him. takes her hand, and he kisses her cheek she's a doll oh yeah, she's his spitting image: --daddy, brother, boyfriend, friend, whatever. i'm seeing this as the person who took control of the girl and drove her over the edge. the ''she's a doll/she's his spitting image" makes me think of control. like she's no longer her own person, she's who ''he" made her. when you're gone you're still a part of me: he still loves this person, she's still someone very important in his life, even if she is no longer there. he's feeling this loss in a bad way. NOW IT'S OVER: --the way screams this at the end tells me one of two things he's going from inaction to action, either joining this person or looking to do something to the person that pushed her or he's conceding to the fact that she's gone. ---that's just my thoughts. i'm thinking it could be about a close friend, or maybe even a relative. |
