Video Kid Lyrics
Next phase, next craze, next nothing new.
Got the pretty boy beat him up black and blue.
Broke the sissy boy's teeny toy heart in two.
Turned him into a video kid like you.
I know you're just pretending.
There's no window for escape.
I know you see right through me.
There's no promise left to break.
Shot the pretty boy killed him on commodore.
Need a new game, need a new something more.
Got a new face got a new way to score.
Got a voice like something I've heard before.
The message misleading.
We're lying, we're cheating.
We're only repeating.
The motions preceding.
Got the pretty boy beat him up black and blue.
Broke the sissy boy's teeny toy heart in two.
Turned him into a video kid like you.
There's no window for escape.
I know you see right through me.
There's no promise left to break.
Need a new game, need a new something more.
Got a new face got a new way to score.
Got a voice like something I've heard before.
We're lying, we're cheating.
We're only repeating.

The song is about Windows Vista. No, really. I'll explain.
Next phase, next craze, next nothing new.
Got the pretty boy, beat him up black and blue
Broke the sissy boy's teeny toy heart in two
Turned him in to a video kid like you
Windows Vista: "next nothing new". It's XP (the pretty boy, because XP was the first Windows with excessive eye candy) with the color scheme changed around (including lots of black and blue). The 16-bit support (the sissy boy, because of its lack of power) has been taken out of the 64-bit version. The task of having 16-bit applications run was turned in (i.e. handed over) to a "video kid" (a geek, or, if it's a pars pro toto, the geek community) who will probably make an emulator to keep the old DOS games going. (maybe the bleeping noises at the beginning of the song allude to them)
I know you're just pretending
There's no window for escape
I know you see right through me
There's no promise left to break
Though Windows Vista has a new UI, with translucent ("see through") windows, if you look beneath the surface it becomes obvious that it's still Windows (it's pretending to be something new). In spite of the new UI, almost none of the features that were planned at the beginning actually made it in. ("There's no promise left to break.")
Shot the pretty boy, killed him on commodore
Need a new game, need a new something more
Windows Vista no longer works on older hardware ("older" being five years back). There are also lots of compatibility problems with older software ("need a new game"). If it does run, it will be slow, and hardware upgrades a necessity ("need a new something more").
Got a new face, got a new way to score
The new user interface
Got a voice like something I've heard before
The Windows core is the same as it was.
The message misleading
We're lying, we're cheating
We're only repeating
The motions preceding
Microsoft admits: Vista is nothing new.

I believe that this song reffers to a woman who uses men as 'toys' and sees them as nothing more.
-She is done 'playing' around with this dude obviously (The shooting thing is clearly metaphorical)
Need a new game, need a new something more. Got a new face got a new way to score.
Got a voice like something I've heard before.
The message misleading.

This song rules.
Excellent song, very catchy and by a really cool band who I am hopefully seeing in july! They're quite unique sounding and this is probably my favourite song.
It's a generalization about the vacuousness and disposability of pop culture.
Exercising that kind of control, the song highlights firm grasp of power and conformity that media has on youth.
The language and imagery used is very tongue in cheek.
its about people that are ready to sell themselves to the media... "We're lying, we're cheating" people who would do everything for fame "Got a new face got a new way to score"
Hmm..think maybe their possible talking about themselves?
I don't think so.. but maybe by saying "we" they mean people in general. We don't even realize we're being fake. For us, it's normal. Maybe she says they are no different... and that eveyone is bound to fall into this trap sooner or later...
Well, I think it is more of two people more than media when I listen to it... I see it as this person is a very good actor or actress...and sucking in innocent people. They take away their innocence and that basically "kills" them. Maybe the person doing this thinks its a game because each one he converts is a conquest. Who this person is, I don't know, but some kind of figure robbing us of our innocence we possess when we see what the world is truly about.
I got to thinking about it, and I thought maybe this was about child abuse ( "beat him up black and blue" ), and further more, kiddie porn. It's more likely about the media and celebrities, but I like to think there's a more creative story being told than more of that old rot.
Perhaps she's telling the story of someone who was forced into the world of child pornography when they were young, and in turn, as an adult, repeated those horrors to another child, or children; "Turn him into a video kid like you...", "We're only repeating, the motions preceeding..." See?
All that stuff about lying could be cover-up for the wretched things they're doing.
I don't know, I just wanted to try to view it from a different angle. I'm not trying to sound like a pervert or anything, but just read it again and think about it differently. It seems to fit.
