The Innocence Mission – When Mac Was Swimming Lyrics

@[ice:44600]-9 I agree, it seems like a child's birthday celebration, "nobody knows how they're loved" - the child doesn't know, because he/she is a child but this is also a nod to all of us adults - we never know how we're loved. And then the line, "the flowers that grew, the things that happened" - adult things in their lives that didn't impinge on the childhood of the kid, or something like that.
And the last line, it's a hopeful - wistful maybe - but a hopeful, positive, bright future is ahead. |

10,000 Maniacs – Among The Americans Lyrics

American high school students should all be taught this bit of the song:
"come the small black book
come the brandy cask
one strange disease
the well worded paper
signed by the drunken
hands of thieves
and suddenly
they were told to leave"
That's it, in a nutshell. All learning should stem from that x |

For me, the best Mark K song ever, and he has written some stunning and heartfelt songs. It's just this simplicity, but utter devastation that floors you. I do think the lassie in the song does kill herself and the whole thing about how you are always that one or two steps away from knowing who, what and why you are here is apparent in the lyrics. A magnificent, simple yet emotionally complex and devastating song, one of the finest ever written. |

A masterpiece. Absolutely brilliant lyrics indicating class and the sheer futility of war, while recognising the individual and personal bravery of the guys and women that did the fighting. Very moving and beautiful and a song that will stand the test of time for sure. |
