When Mac Was Swimming Lyrics
When Mac was swimming I was running late,
walking around New Orleans looking for a birthday cake.
It was a great surprise to him so many people came.
Nobody knows, darling.
Nobody knows how they are loved.
Don't worry, my darling, the sun's coming up.
Let's get up early now, dive clear into the day.
Let's get out of the car with open arms,
not wait to be embraced.
The flowers that grew, the things that happened
since the day you came.
Nobody knows, darling.Nobody knows how they are loved.
Don't worry, my darling, the sun's coming up.
walking around New Orleans looking for a birthday cake.
It was a great surprise to him so many people came.
Nobody knows, darling.
Nobody knows how they are loved.
Don't worry, my darling, the sun's coming up.
Let's get out of the car with open arms,
not wait to be embraced.
The flowers that grew, the things that happened
since the day you came.
Nobody knows, darling.Nobody knows how they are loved.
Don't worry, my darling, the sun's coming up.

it is pretty self explanitory. the song is about how people don't think about how they are appreciated, and can be surprised at how many people care...and would be at their funeral if they died.
Don Peris of The Innocence Mission is a friend of mine and I asked him about this song. His wife writes most of the lyrics. She had opened up an email that had been addressed to the wrong person, and it had talked about being late for Mac's birthday part. That email inspired the song. But I also agree that it shows how people do not realize how much others care for them.
one of my favorites... I love "Let's get up early now, dive clear into the day. Let's get out of the car with open arms, not wait to be embraced." Reminds me of just being SO happy to see someone that you love....we don't know how much we mean to someone.
Um...okay, but what is it about? Even the guy that knows Don didn't find out...?
It sounds to me like a song to/about a child, celebrating a birthday. The parent is running around trying to get the birthday party in order, and the child is just enjoying life in in the way only a child does, nearly oblivious to how much he means to the people that care for him.

Wonderful and sweet. If my daughter ever gets married, this will be our dance, if I have a say.
@ice-9 I agree, it seems like a child's birthday celebration, "nobody knows how they're loved" - the child doesn't know, because he/she is a child but this is also a nod to all of us adults - we never know how we're loved. And then the line, "the flowers that grew, the things that happened" - adult things in their lives that didn't impinge on the childhood of the kid, or something like that.

And the last line, it's a hopeful - wistful maybe - but a hopeful, positive, bright future is ahead.
