This seems to me either to be a really sweet song about a girl... or a song about a girl drownding herself... i kinda hope the former...

the girl addressed sounds like emily dickinson a little. she spent her life inside and wrote a poem about whether or not she was loved and also one about how she can feel the ocean and the beach even though she never actually saw the sea.

I feel like you are right, ElegantMule, that she is a sad girl who drowns herself in the sea. Even if this isn't the song's meaning, it's an incredibly sad and beautiful composition.

For me, the best Mark K song ever, and he has written some stunning and heartfelt songs. It's just this simplicity, but utter devastation that floors you. I do think the lassie in the song does kill herself and the whole thing about how you are always that one or two steps away from knowing who, what and why you are here is apparent in the lyrics. A magnificent, simple yet emotionally complex and devastating song, one of the finest ever written.
