Rainbow Sleeves Lyrics

You used to dream yourself away each night

To places that you've never been.

On wings made of wishes that you whispered to yourself

Back when every night the moon and you would slip away to places

Where you knew that you would never get the blues.

Well, now, whiskey gives you wings to carry each one of your dreams

And the moon does not belong to you

But I believe that your heart keeps young dreams, I've been told

To keep them there for growing old

And a heart that has been broken will be stronger when it mends.

Don't let the blues stop you singing

Darling, you've only got a broken wing

Hey, you just hang onto my rainbow

Hang on to my rainbow

Hang on to my rainbow...sleeves.

When my father passed away when I was fifteen years old, his best friend brought me to his house and set a gallon jug of wine in front of me and played this song and said, "Just cry it out, kid". This songs took me through so many poignant moments in my life and I'm so glad it exists.

I loved Kimmortal's quote about this one being there in poignant moments and being glad it exists. Me too. Absolutely! Just after high school (1985), my parent's basement became the hangout for my friends and me. Some of us drank more than we should (try and tell an alcoholic they've had enough for the night when you are at THEIR house). This song always reminds me of those times when she sang the line 'And a heart that has been broken/Will be/Stronger when it mends. I would practically demand silence and one night a friend went on a rant and said whoever can say that has never truly been in love? I'm a bit older now. Sober. This song will ALWAYS demand my full attention. I introduce people to it and blow their minds. My favorite lyric now? 'Don't let the blues stop you singing/Darling, you've only got a broken wing.

A beautiful, beautiful, poetic song I have been listening to all my life and will do so until I die. It's just the most moving, delicate, heart-rending song, an absolute masterpiece x
