Birdless Lyrics
Something will shine in the backyard.
Blue lanterns. Or Saint Gerard,
Who was lost in the snow.
Something will shine on the ground.
My Father will bend His ear to the ground.
When we are lost in Carlisle,
When we are birdless,
Flowerless in the spring
And we cannot sing.
Oh Father John in the driveway,
When we walk out he will bless us,
With his hands on our heads.
All down the sidewalk there are these
Chalk ballerinas the neighbours
Drew with arms to the sky.
When we are lost in Carlisle,
When we are birdless,
Flowerless in the spring
And we cannot sing.
Where are we going tomorrow,
Where are we going?
Oh I can only say we will be found.
Something will shine in the backyard.
Blue lanterns. Or Saint Gerard.
Who was lost in the snow.
Blue lanterns. Or Saint Gerard,
Who was lost in the snow.
My Father will bend His ear to the ground.
When we are birdless,
Flowerless in the spring
And we cannot sing.
When we walk out he will bless us,
With his hands on our heads.
Chalk ballerinas the neighbours
Drew with arms to the sky.
When we are birdless,
Flowerless in the spring
And we cannot sing.
Where are we going?
Oh I can only say we will be found.
Blue lanterns. Or Saint Gerard.
Who was lost in the snow.

I'm pretty sure this song is referring to having difficulty having children. Saint Gerard is the patron saint of children. "Saint Gerard. Who was lost in the snow." "When we are birdless, Flowerless in the spring" is also pretty clear.
I can relate to this tune a little too well. It's longing is tangible.
And, oddly, Carlisle (I assume this is Carlisle, PA) was always a place I only ended up in when lost.
@dealingwith Lovely post and I hope all this time later you are ok. It's a beautiful song, I have been listening to it regularly for years and it remains a wonderful, beautiful, poignant song. Take care x

My go to emotional song. It's just pure poetry and profound. I'll be listening to this on my death bed, absolutely. Beautiful xx
