Eulogy Lyrics

Today/
all the sources would agree/
that the day of their death was a cold dark day/
Scuttled/
ships have blocked the sea/
and the pallid light of morning melts into an ashy gray/

Chorus
And goodbye to everything/
sayonara everyone/
they are tired/
write the eulogy/
And I saw them as they passed/
it was like a millstone cast/
far into the deep blue sea/

No one/
understood a word they said/
hailed them all as kings up upon a pedestal/
Their names/
scribbled on a parchment piece/
would sink like any ship listing fast from ruptured hull/

Bridge
The murky sea is black/
dismal and so deep/
millstones rocket through the dark/
into it’s icy keep/
A resting place for broken ships/
a cemetery for the humble/
no one’s here to make you stumble/

If Jesus Christ is true/
then I am mostly lies/
if Jesus Christ is Love/
then I have failed to try/
if Jesus Christ is Life/
then please just let me die/
let...this...die...

this is an awesome song! reese has been blessed with such an awesome voice!! I'm not sure what it means, but i know in the Bible it says that if anyone causes someone to sin, they'd be better off being thrown into the sea wit ha millstone (you know..those stone they use to grind grain or whatever at mills? those things are freaking huge!!) tied around their neck. pretty deep.

this song is about how as a band Five Iron has become more than they hoped for, they're planning to break up soon and go on with their lives but even the rumor of such a thing has really stirred their fans. They feel like noone understands the message they've been preaching, and that as a band they are put too high on a pedastool, but when they're done, when they stop making music what imprint will they have on the fans? the last few lines almost sound suicidal but they aren't Reese feels that if he caused his fans to worship him then he should be the one thrown into the sea with the millstones.

yeah....i read on their website that Reese wrote it about how everyone idolizes their band so much and how he wishes it would stop...or not necessarily stop but die down.

Great song w/ great vocals in the chorus. I read bout them breaking up on their website. They pray each year, seeking what God wants for them. This year they felt God was leading them to seperate. It's a great testimony to see that a band is more concerned w/ what God wants for them, than what they or anyone else wants of them.

good call on the meaning of this song. It just occured to me while thinking about the name of their latest release (cheeses of nazareth) that the name of that album and this song kind of tie in together. like Reese frustratedly mocking the fans who feel that five irons legacy will be their silly songs "no one understood a word they said, held them all as kings up upon a pedistal" like everytime he writes such brilliant lyrics they go unnoticed or taken at face value, or misheard almost like "cheeses of nazareth". I think the fact the album is supposed to be entirely silly songs (dont own it yet, so i might be wrong) is a kind or tongue in cheek bitterness towards those who have been telling the band to make more silly songs (for those who dont know, there was an uproar from many "fans" who wrote emails, came on message boards, and talked to the band in person saying their last two albums werent good due to lack of silly songs and extra tracks) and I can't help but feel that if I walked up to Reese and said "Oh man I just got cheeses and that album is great, you guys are the funniest band ever" it would make him sad and think less of me.

yeah, i love this song so much. for the longest time, i used it as a lullaby. there is such an air of finality and things finishing in the song, i thought 'twas a great way to end my day; by falling asleep to it. then one night, i realize a deeper meaning in the bridge: "A resting place for broken ships, a cemetery for the humble, noone's here to make you stumble..." i think that reese is comparing our souls to ships. and when you become saved, 'tis like you're dying. i always liked the idea that i was buried in a "cemetery for the humble." the first step to admitting that you need a savior is humility and becoming humble. and then the most passionate part of the song, when reese sings, "If Jesus Christ is truth, then I am mostly lies. If Jesus Christ is love, then I have failed to try. If Jesus Christ is life, then please, just let me die! LET...THIS...DIE!" i always feel that that phrase is referring to submitting your life to Christ; completely and wholly becoming humble and dying to yourself. there is probably a duel meaning, since some of the previous posts have claimed that reese stated that this song is about how FIF's fans hold them up on a pedestol. and i can see how that might be a part of the song, but the overall impression that i derive from it is in the bridge and last verse.

I never understood the part:

If Jesus Christ is true/ then I am mostly lies/ if Jesus Christ is Love/ then I have failed to try/ if Jesus Christ is Life/ then please just let me die/ let...this...die...

What does this exactly mean? I probably sound dumb to those who know what it means but when they say that, it doesn't sound very religious. "If jesus christ is love then i have failed to try" Does he not want us to love Jesus? "If Jesus Christ is true, then I am mostly lies" This sounds very hypocritical, like if Jesus is true, then everything he's been preaching is a lie. I'm probably completely off-base, but what is it supposed to be?

"If Jesus Christ is true, then I am mostly lies" he hasn't been living a life towards God. he's been lying and not truthful. "if Jesus Christ is Love, then I have failed to try" He hasn't been loving everyone with all of his heart and ability. Jesus loved everything. "If Jesus Christ is life, then please just let me die" He feels he doesn't deserve to be with God since His actions contradict his love of God.

This song is basically him confessing his wrongs. you have to submit yourself to God. You can't go on in your life alone.

This is how I view it,

For me this is one of the most powerful song they have to ever move me, and feel like I was hit by a truck, and want to die..

"if Jesus Christ is Life/ then please just let me die/ let...this...die..."

If I die, I may be able to be with him, this body just makes me so apart from HIM...I'm so sad now.

I want to die now, and escape every little things that surround me. and just be with HIM instead.
