After All These Years Lyrics
Breathe in the night
That crushed a tired sunrise
Born again the day
Brings young naivety
A laptop souvenir is worth its weight
In silver a golden son
You'll be home again
And I'll be home again
Mend in my sleep
I'm boxing under water
Waddle on the wake
Waking on a summer day
After all these years
Forget about all the troubled times
And every father's pain
Casts a shadow over a broken son
You'll be whole again
And I'll be whole again
Munificent, artless and ascetic
Playing like a scared
Enthusiastic pawn
All those years
I was hurting to feel
Something more than life
That crushed a tired sunrise
Born again the day
Brings young naivety
In silver a golden son
You'll be home again
And I'll be home again
I'm boxing under water
Waddle on the wake
Waking on a summer day
Forget about all the troubled times
Casts a shadow over a broken son
You'll be whole again
And I'll be whole again
Playing like a scared
Enthusiastic pawn
I was hurting to feel
Something more than life

Munificent, artless and ascetic Playing like a scared Enthusiastic pawn I wonder if this part is about losing control and being thrown into the music business 'munificent' because he was so liberal in giving everything he had to the music business. 'ascetic' (meaning strict self-denial) perhaps having to do with his attempt to gain control through anorexia. 'playing like a scared enthusiastic pawn' another indicator of a loss of control, feeling used perhaps. I don't really know...but it is a gorgeous song..really dynamic
This song is my favourite Silverchair song... While I'm not a massive fan of the band, this song is brilliant.
I think it's basically about going through life's struggles- they got famous really fast and at such a young age, and I know myself from being a teen myself, it's hard. Particularly when it comes to how I see myself. I don't care if I'm doing damage to my body, anymore... But they were like 14 when they started getting noticed, so Daniel didn't have the chance to really mature or be comfortable within himself before critics etc. watched every step, trip and fall... It must've been really difficult for them and I admire them for pulling together.
I think it's about when you come out of a depression into an emotional high. One of those good days you think that it'll stay good from now on (of course it wont).
Definitely see the getting out of depression/recovering from the ED connection. A burden is being lifted off his shoulders, and you just want to forget about that black cloud, at least for now.
Oh. The ending to this song is absolutely beautiful.
Great on the album.. and even better in the live recording @ a Newcastle concert I found on YoutTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6HE0q5wz5Bg&NR=1 such a touching aspect to Daniel's voice.. still trying to find my personal meaning though.
If it's really about father/son relationship, maybe it's so: he tried a lot to be so much more than he is to make his father proud, that's where 'something more than life' goes. And yes, they've had their problems, their wounds, but they can just forget about it now. Of course I'm being COMPLETELY superficial and perhaps I'm ALL wrong. But at least this thought is leading me to the understanding of the whole song... hm.
this song is beautiful, it's a different sound to SC and i like it!@ my fave part is Breathe in the night That crushed a tired sunrise Born again the day Brings you naivety a song of pain and how time may still not heal all wounds...i love it
This is such a beautiful song. 'All those years I was hurting to feel Something more than life' But i am not so sure of what the song is actually on about. I mean, love maybe? That last part definately makes it seem so...but i dunno.
