If it's really about father/son relationship, maybe it's so: he tried a lot to be so much more than he is to make his father proud, that's where 'something more than life' goes. And yes, they've had their problems, their wounds, but they can just forget about it now.
Of course I'm being COMPLETELY superficial and perhaps I'm ALL wrong. But at least this thought is leading me to the understanding of the whole song... hm.
