"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

This is a hauntingly beautiful song about introspection, specifically about looking back at a relationship that started bad and ended so poorly, that the narrator wants to go back to the very beginning and tell himself to not even travel down that road. This song as a lot of strong emotion amd feeling. Hate as long as anger. Personally I can relate to this song. My own father treated me like shit since I was very young. I don't know where he is, and I don't really care. All he left me with is scars. So I can really relate. He made the feeling so strong that all the bad memories came rushing back to me and made me hate him all over again. I just have one thing about the corus though.

This is such an emotional song...whenever I listen to it I cry because it is exactly the father that i have to live with. i mean i know what he went through bc i have 2 go through it everyday. This is the best song on this cd, then Not Like You. The cd fuckin rockz!
