If There Is a God Lyrics

If there is a God,
I know he likes to rock
He likes his loud guitars
and his Spiders from Mars

And if there is a God,
I know she's watching me
She says, "she likes what she sees,
but there's trouble on the breeze."

Who are you this time?
Are you one of us flying blind?
Because I'm down here throwing stones,
while you're so far from home

And if there is a God
I know they're on TV
they're the spies with bedroom eyes
that cower in our skies

Who are you this time?
Are you one of us flying blind?
Because I'm down here throwing stones,
while you're so far from home

It's been a live song for awhile...I got to see Mr. Corgan perform it acoustically. Very beautiful, indeed. This song to me is not so much questioning the existant of God but questioning if he cares...wondering if he's the caring and compassionate father that religion paints him as, or the cold and impersonal being that the harshness of reality suggests.

what's this what's this? A little reference to one of the masters of style-change? Imagine the surprise when i suddenly realised that "the spiders from mars" line originally comes from David Bowie's years as Ziggy (I've only recently begun to dig through his music). Quite a coincidence too, because just a week or 2 ago i stumbled across a vid of billy and david performing on david's 50th birthday! it, indeed, is a little like Joan Osborne's song. Though her song is more a "what if" song, while this song is more asking about where god is on earth, and if he has as much trouble living modern life as we do?

Are you sure the lyrics are right? When I've heard this (over and over!) I hear "I know HE likes to rock" and "I know SHEs watching me". i remember the first time I heard it I expected it to only speak of the male side of god and was amazed when it addressed god as male and female. I will have to go and listen to it again.

To me this is more a song of seeking god and not knowing where to start. Perhaps pertaining to the multitude of religions and the multitude of ideas about god. Wanting to be shown a little direction and knowing that its a personal journey at the same time. "Throwing stones" for the attention of god, but perhaps god is "one of us" - within ourselves, not distant.

Yes the lyrics are wrong. If you listen to the piano solo version where you can hear Billy singing a lot clearer you can here him sing 'He', 'She' and then 'They'. I'm going to submit a correction.

Kahlan, you are correct as far as the lyrics for this song on MACHINA II. But this song has been around for awhile and played live numerous times, with slightly different lyrics. So, that's why they didn't seem "correct" when you saw them here. Alas, I feel as though the MACHINA II lyrics are the best as well - the mention of both male and female aspects of God really brings something else out of the song.

I think this song is just beautiful... I love the way that Billy sings it... I always cry when I listen to this song...

i got a live version of this apparently with billy singing while radiohead played the music...which was nice. (but I guess cant confirm that)

this song, i think, is basically everything god could be: male, female, they, watching us/omniscient, one of us, from mars, and in us. all of the ways that all people view god. this is saying that god doesn’t just exist only in churches or only in religion, its also saying that god could be our own creation or our conscience.
the first line is amazing though, its bordering on campfire singalong / brilliance. :)

damn...thats just what i wouldve said if i had been thinking about it first..thanks for your awesome comment!
