Silent In The Morning Lyrics
My glance is always darting, when I stroll the avenue
Avoiding all the obstacles that terrorize my view
If you are here with me, I trust you to lead the way
When you're not I follow you, and always go astray
You're silent in the morning, suspended in the trees
Lunch time comes you've found your voice, it brings me to my knees
The volume just increases, the resounding echoes grow
Till once again I bask in morning stillness, I love so
The target that I shoot for seems to move with every breath
I tighten all my arteries and make one last request
Divine creation hears me, and he squashes me with fear
I think that this exact thing happened to me, just last year
Chorus:
Silent in the morning
You found your voice that brings me to
Silent in the morning
You found your voice that brings me to
Silent in the morning
You found your voice that brings me to my knees
I will not dismiss you, shelter you, speak with you
Smile at you, trust in me, laugh and brush you off, and I'd agree

I have a strong belief that this song is about heroin addiction. I have been affected by addiction and have truly found some songs completely blatantly obvious when listening to them the "second time around". Meaning, before I was touched by this sickness, I was clueless. I myself am not an addict, but I have personally watched addiction destroy loved ones lives. After years of struggles and support of loved ones with this illness, I have been hardened and see a different side to some things.
Anyway, here goes my INTERPRETATION/opinion...
My glance is always darting, when I stroll the avenue Avoiding all the obstacles that terrorize my view If you are here with me, I trust you to lead the way When you're not I follow you, and always go astray
-An addict looking for fix. Trusting only in the drug to fix everything going wrong within.
You're silent in the morning, suspended in the trees Lunch time comes you've found your voice, it brings me to my knees The volume just increases, the resounding echoes grow Till once again I bask in morning stillness, I love so
-This speaks of how every day is a fresh start, a new outlook (with the cravings waiting/looming). By noon the cravings come back, and are debilitating. The cycle continues, once again basking in the morning peace that sleep and a new day brings.
The target that I shoot for seems to move with every breath I tighten all my arteries and make one last request Divine creation hears me, and he squashes me with fear
I will not dismiss you, shelter you, speak with you Smile at you, trust in me, laugh and brush you off, and I'd agree
Maybe.

@jake111823 Wow, thanks for chiming in. It's been so long since I wrote this.

As I stated, this is my interpretation. And as Trey mentions in the link (which is awesome and appreciated), often himself and Tom Marshall have differing ideas on what a song means. Would love to hear what Tom has to say on his podcast some day.

I always thought this song was about going to a phish show. Waking up and being amongst the trees in some cases and it being relatively quiet while everyone is still a little hung over and what not and then as the day proceeds it gradually gets louder. The whole thing about the obstaces and darting people might be about walking around possibly under the influence trying not to fall over or something.
This song could easily be about tripping but all I feel is love and all it brings with it. I think it highlights the ebb and flow of both the inner self and the outer reality. My personal take - is a love that is waded in other things - but you ever realize how the morning itself brings such clarity - even if scary? This song personally makes me thing of my love who I am leaving and knows it but still there is nothing more comforting in the morning than how close and cuddlied we are and how difficult it is to find people of this nature -- people who like to really hear things and listen to their dreams and listen to each other, who know how to listen to the silence as well.
like many phish songs it is relationship oriented definetely not tripping
I agree with carroll76. It's about addiction, or at least my experiences of loved ones' addictions. I disagree on a few points...
My glance is always darting, when I stroll the avenue Avoiding all the obstacles that terrorize my view If you are here with me, I trust you to lead the way When you're not I follow you, and always go astray
---- An addict needing a fix. Obstacles could be loved ones, a nagging sense of wanting to recover, the law, finances...anything that might prevent the addict from obtaining what he wants. "You" is the drug/addiction. The user either has some on hand and trusts it's what he needs, but when the user doesn't have it, he seeks it out, despite any good intentions.
You're silent in the morning, suspended in the trees Lunch time comes you've found your voice, it brings me to my knees The volume just increases, the resounding echoes grow Till once again I bask in morning stillness, I love so
---- The user wakes each morning without the overwhelming cravings. It's suspended in the trees (like a kite?) -- it's far away, unreachable, it doesn't seem like it can affect you. It almost feels normal for a little bit and a sense of being able to overcome brings peace and stillness. As the day goes along, the cravings return and intensify, and the addict gives in. The next morning starts the same cycle.
The target that I shoot for seems to move with every breath I tighten all my arteries and make one last request Divine creation hears me, and he squashes me with fear I think that this exact thing happened to me just last year
---- The user wants to stop using, but recovery is elusive. Tightening arteries doesn't necessarily mean heroin, but possibly any strong emotional event that leads to high blood pressure. The user makes a plea to his higher power, and is answered that he most confront his addiction -- which is incredible fearful for the addict. To top it off, he's had this realization before.
I will not dismiss you, shelter you, speak with you Smile at you, trust in me, laugh and brush you off, and I'd agree
--- When the user realizes he must confront his addiction, he also realizes he will not: -------- Deny his addiction -------- Continue giving it safe harbor -------- Give it any power by speaking to it -- justifying actions -------- Derive happiness from it -------- Trust himself during early recovery -------- Pretend it's not a big deal
Still, the theory about the dog is pretty convincing and fits as well.
@jayemine Right on jayemine. You put it far more eloquently than I.

This song is amazing, hands down, it cripples you
I always assumed that this entire album was about the fall of a relationship from the point of first realizing it's doomed.....this song being the final "freedom" one feels when finally single again...(your voice brings me to my knees aka fingernails on the blackboard).
pretty sure i have read somewhere that this song was about trey's dog, marley.
This whole album is about a rift growing between a guy and his girlfriend, most of it takes place within a dream he's having. Silent in the morning is most likely about 2 things. Either it's about the morning after having sex with his girlfriend, or it's about him awakening from the dream that is the album, and due to the realisation he had, he's silent in the morning.
lucid dreams.
not relationships. phish isnt superficial. dig deeper you drones.
