It's about the cycle of narcissicm."Behold the man, a living example", contrasted with "the hand the feeds is the hand that beats me fiercely in the face". The song is about someone being held by an abuser, either a parent or a partner, and pretty much forced to worship them. "all those things I've loved" once he realizes how fucked up his Stockholm Syndrome was, he starts questioning all the sentimentalities and memories he accrued either growing up under the parent or being in a presumable long term relationship with someone.

After he starts questioning "what have I done" for a while he himself will end up becoming a narcissist. He will build himself an effigy and no longer mope in mediocre hell, perhaps perpetuating the same cycle that got himself into the situation onto someone else. Behold his likeness, sacred profane.
