I'd like to leave this
In my youth
You pick me up on the way
Send away virus

Drink sight is water
Drink sight is water
Watch him sell mugs to bikers
To make a million dollars
Place your stamp here
Send out love letters

C'mon enough said
The skin on top his hand
Has dried to red

The words, want 'em touch 'em
The nerve, why are you here now
Why are you
Why are you
You

Back off peer
I am on top of this
Back off peer
I am on top of this back off
I need to make decisions
And I want to leave yea back off
Back off peer
I want to make decisions
And I want to leave yea back off

Back off, back off
(Back off)
Back off, back off
(Back off)
Back off, back off
(Back off)
Back off, back off
(Back off)

Yeah
Banned

It starts off all sweet and calm, and is ripping your skull apart at the end... typical Chevelle... kick ass.. I'd like to think this song is about independence to one's self, "back off peer, I am on top of this- bcak off, I need to to make decisions, and I want to leave" And you know what?? Reguardless of what the song is really about, it just kicks ass anyways. farewell FSQ

Peer is someone on your level of the hierarchy. I.e. someone you know. Someone who isn't higher or lower.

"Back off peer, I am on top of it" = Stop interferring I can deal with this.

Yeah I've allways thought this song is just about peer pressure, but I don't understand the lyrics at the beggining (the soft part) all I understand is The nerve, why are you here Back off peer I am on top of this Back off peer I am on top of this back off I need to make decisions And I want to leave yea back off Banned

this song is awesome but i think its actually "i need to make decisions and i want to lead" i don't know that's what it sounds like and i think it makes more sense because leaders want to make decisions.

    My Interpretation

(I'd like to leave this in my youth) Subject person wanting to leave something behind in life, or maybe life itself when said person is young. (pick me up on your way) Not sure, but this used to be a common way to ask for a ride I think. Who is traveling idk but the subject doesnt have the means to do it themselves, apparently. (send away virus) Maybe Pete is talking now, saying "go away virus" "blow away" (Drink, sight is water) Pete is probably continuing to say "look at the world" "see the world" "experience is vital (like water)" most people have their sense of sight, which is taken for granted, and perhaps unappreciated or underused. (watch him sell mugs to bikers, to make a million dollars) Not sure, but if you look at travel mugs in 1998 -the date Peer was released, they were a bit awkward like the start of most things, even though travel mugs started in 1980 i think. Not sure a biker would be interested in one from this salesman, especially with the promotions of an initial free drink upon purchase of an establishment's mug/cup. Yet there is a scheme to do accomplish wealth by these means. I have to both admire and pity this subject. (Place your stamp here, send out love letters) Reading a bit on the history of the postage stamp I still cant be sure why someone is being told to place their stamp, and on (a) love letter(s) as well. "Lickable", or moisture-activated postage stamps came about roughly in 1850. Love letter writing isn't so hard to imagine at this time, nor is it hard to imagine someone having to be instructed on how to send one at the post office since it was new. (The skin atop his hands, has dried to red) There are many reasons why a man's hands would turn red, ruling out the palms, and that the subject is not female, it could be stress, chemical exposure, an exposure of a certain duration and/or degree of cold, even smoking or repetitive movement (maybe even the vibrating of motorcycle handles). (The words, want 'em touch 'em) Not sure if this is an observation of poor English used by the subject, or the subject himself is still being shown toiling to make his living, using basic sales pitches such as "look at the words on these cups" "Want 'em?" "They're strong, touch 'em" (The nerve, why are you here) This maybe belongs with the verse prior as it was the last one sang in the soothing melodic tone. In another song by Chevelle, Loeffler sings "You should ask for more... You child ... You martyr ... Leave!" Maybe this is food for thought for some. Don't go scraping your way off the grid, or get in that position. Humans need one another to an extent, and this being known; deserve some degree of dignity, as they dignify others; to live a miserable existence is virtually unnecessary. (Back off peer I am on top of this back off I need to make decisions And I want to leave yea back off Banned[?]) Perhaps things are out of order. Perhaps it's right where it belongs. The subject apparently wants to continue in their fruitless endeavor as a lone wolf, which probably was a metaphor the whole time.

    My Interpretation

Soooooooo yea. i think i undestand the song, let me explain: The whole song is about his conscience, but he calls it his peer, because it seems to be a part of him and the two together make a decision.

I'd like to leave this In my youth (He would like to live his life like he was when he was young, when he didnt have a conscience. When you little you dont know right from wrong, you cant blame a 4 yr old for doing a bad thing, he knows no better) Pick me up on your way (here is interesting. He is saying that his conscience picks him up when he is older and leads him, as in when we get older we understand right from wrong and from that point on can NEVER really do bad things because we know its bad and we get that feeling that kills us when we do a bad deed and dont fix it. So our conscience in a way controls us, picks us up and takes us on ITS way.) Send away virus (also very interesting. Our conscience sends away viruses. that little nagging in the back of our head when we do bad is our conscience's firewall against bad deeds. Repeatedly making the wrong choice kills our conscience, some people kill innocent people and dont bat an eye, they have killed their conscience, so to keep this from happening, our conscience sends away viruses with this guilt.) Drink sight is water Drink sight is water (ummmm idk) Watch him sell mugs to bikers To make a million dollars Place you stamp here Send out love letters (tells of a man who is doing anything to get by like selling mugs to bikers, but most importantly, it is an honest living) C'mon enough said The skin on top his hands Has dried to red The words, want them touch them The nerve, why are you here (this is where it gets good. he is talking of a man who makes an honest living with manuel labor, his hands are red from hard work. cmon enough said is shutup conscience i hear your words, i wish i could feel you. the NERVE of our conscience to tell us we are doing the right thing when it is us, not our conscience that suffers. Hes hands are red in pain, not his conscience, yet its telling him hes doing the right thing? this is the intro to the angry part of the song.) (right here it breaks, this is the point at which he is fed up with his conscience, his peer, so he gets angry. acoustic, sweet melody with smooth voice, then later edgy guitar riffs, drums, screeming) Back off peer I am on top of this Back off peer I am on top of this back off I need to make decisions And I want to leave yea back off Banned (BACK OFF CONSCIENCE. lol he is breaking down, im tired of my conscience, it is soo much easier to live life without one, but you force compassion on me, and because of that look where i am in life, and YOU have the nerve to stick around? im fed up. at this point he decides to push his conscience back, drop a hard, honest life, and live a life of ease by doing bad things and not being pestered)

So the song is about: a story of a man fed up with busting his ass for others and getting nothing in return. he wants to be bad from now on but cant do it with his conscience controlling him. or it could be about anyone really who decides its time for a little me time, tells their conscience to back off while they do a selfish deed and dont want the nagging feeling later.

ok so this is probably one of my favorite songs by chevelle. I see many different meanings in different parts of the song. Im going to try to bring them back together at the end though.

I'd like to leave this In my youth Pick me up on your way Send away virus Drink sight is water Drink sight is water

This seams to be about alcoholism. The virus is alcoholism. Drink, sight is water is how i read it with the comma. Drink being a command. switch it around water is sight. Stop drinking and drink water.

Watch him sell mugs to bikers To make a million dollars Place you stamp here Send out love letters The skin on top his hands Has dried to red

This seems like the effects of alcoholism. Selling mugs at a cheap stand on the street, working at the post office. Saying to a customer, "place you(r) stamp here." Both are crappy jobs that maybe an alcoholism could get. Maybe I'm stretching the lyrics though. The skin turns red due to manual labor jobs.

The words, want them touch them The nerve, why are you here Back off peer I am on top of this Back off peer I am on top of this back off I need to make decisions And I want to leave yea back off Banned

"the words, want them touch them" Seems like the words a friend might say that you need to get your life turned around. He doesn't want their help, back off peer. I know what I'm doing. "And I want to leave yea back off" Seems like what someone might say to a friend that is trying to not let them drive home drunk, being a highschooler that is what comes to mind. Banned....I'm not really sure and am going to stretch this. Banned from being friends, banned from the world.

I read these lyrics for maybe 5 minutes and this is what I came up with. I could be going totally down the wrong direction with alcoholism but that seems right to me. Comment please.

Standing On The Edge Of Summer
Thursday
In regards to the meaning of this song: Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.” That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.

Dreamwalker
Silent Planet
I think much like another song “Anti-Matter” (that's also on the same album as this song), this one is also is inspired by a horrifying van crash the band experienced on Nov 3, 2022. This, much like the other track, sounds like it's an extension what they shared while huddled in the wreckage, as they helped frontman Garrett Russell stem the bleeding from his head wound while he was under the temporary effects of a concussion. The track speaks of where the mind goes at the most desperate & desolate of times, when it just about slips away to all but disconnect itself, and the aftermath.

Gentle Hour
Yo La Tengo
This song was originally written by a guy called Peter Gutteridge. He was one of the founders of the "Dunedin Sound" a musical scene in the south of New Zealand in the early 80s. From there it was covered by "The Clean" one of the early bands of that scene (he had originally been a member of in it's early days, writing a couple of their best early songs). The Dunedin sound, and the Clean became popular on american college radio in the mid to late 80s. I guess Yo La Tengo heard that version. Great version of a great song,

American Town
Ed Sheeran
Ed Sheeran shares a short story of reconnecting with an old flame on “American Town.” The track is about a holiday Ed Sheeran spends with his countrywoman who resides in America. The two are back together after a long period apart, and get around to enjoying a bunch of fun activities while rekindling the flames of their romance.

Page
Ed Sheeran
There aren’t many things that’ll hurt more than giving love a chance against your better judgement only to have your heart crushed yet again. Ed Sheeran tells such a story on “Page.” On this track, he is devastated to have lost his lover and even more saddened by the feeling that he may never move on from this.
