Five, Eight, and Ten Lyrics
The humble and righteous and meek
Are teaching me who's will to seek
But who really knows how to speak
About these things
Questions of where can he go
When he is feeling so low
And kicking himself just to show
How he still bleeds
And I want to know the difference between
What sparkles and what is gold
I wonder how many eyes
Are fixed like a vulture's on me
Now I wonder if I can even move or breathe
Without disappointing someone
And I know what they call themselves
But I don't remember inviting them
To put me on this pedastal
And make me feel so naked
Afraid to look down
Afraid to turn around
I bring it on myself
I know I bring it on myself
And I want to know the difference between
What sparkles and what is gold
I walked along beside the purple mountains beneath the orange sky
Imagined what it all might look like with these planks out of my eyes
I wondered if the big white horse was coming down tonight
I wanted to taste that victory but my mouth was dry
There is only tonight and the light that bleeds from your heart
Makes me want to try and start again
Are teaching me who's will to seek
But who really knows how to speak
About these things
When he is feeling so low
And kicking himself just to show
How he still bleeds
What sparkles and what is gold
Are fixed like a vulture's on me
Now I wonder if I can even move or breathe
Without disappointing someone
But I don't remember inviting them
To put me on this pedastal
And make me feel so naked
Afraid to turn around
I know I bring it on myself
What sparkles and what is gold
Imagined what it all might look like with these planks out of my eyes
I wondered if the big white horse was coming down tonight
I wanted to taste that victory but my mouth was dry
Makes me want to try and start again

I think the plank in the eye line is a reference to Jesus' advice not to concentrate on a speck of dust in someone else's eyes when you have an entire plank of wood in your own.
I've always took the big white horse coming down as a reference to that kids show in which a boy has a white toy horse (or pegasus?) that comes to life at night. Anyone remember that?
@Lyburnum OMG I made this comment 12 years ago. That's ancient.

God damn this song gets pretty badass halfway through.
"I bring it on myself I know I bring it on myself"
yeah, Mineral Owns!! "I wanted to taste that victory but my mouth was dry" =~
Absolutely incredible. Esp. the line "And kicking himself just to show how he still bleeds". Anyone an idea for what the title means?
Actually, when he is talking about the big white horse coming tonight, i believe he is referring to Christ's second coming because in the book of Revelations it says that He will come back on a big white horse.
I just posted a comment but it didn't seem to work..but if i am repeating myself...forgive me?
Yeah, the plank in his eye line does refer to the verse in Luke. The big white horse is actually a reference to what it says in the book of Revelations about Christ coming for the second time on a big white horse. Seems that the writer of this song is saying that he wants to see Christ come back and feel oh so great about it and taste the victory for God and all His people but then he says "but my mouth was dry" - and i think he means that maybe he has become complacent, or lost his christian passion, or hope...or fire..or he has been just so discouraged and tore down by other people in the church. Mainly, i think the song is about people in churches that judge you, and watch your every move and make sure that you are the perfect christian and not a hypocrite when really, they are a hypocrite themselves..or they just don't know what they're doing.
is mineral a christian band? do they have a website? can someone PM me or IM me about it since i probably won't check back here?
as much as i think a lot of the time mineral is a "christian band", i think that simpson question's God just as much in his songs as he praises him. I do think it is kind of a commentary on the church and how sometimes people look down on you for not living perfect christian lives. mainly -- i think that this song is a struggle between believing in God and believing in the institution of religion.
however -- i do think you could take the religious references out of the song and just take it as society looking down on people and every decision they make.
i think that this song is about hypocrisy and how one's relationship with god is between the two of them and that it has nothing to do with others.
Some info on the song title. The numbers come from revelations. There is a series of numbers in the Bible's Revelations: 17:9-14, that goes as follows... 7,7,1,7,5,1,1,8,7,10, 10,1,1,600... notice that the fifth, eight, and tenth numbers are five, eight, and ten, respectively. 5, 8, and 10 add up to 23, which is said to be the number of death, but I don't think that is relevant to this song. 5 is grace (which chris sings of again and again), 8 is new birth, 10 is divine perfection. the last lines "try and start again" seems to reference the new birth. and yet another allusion to the Bible and Revelations, along with the plank and the white horse. just some random rambling observations... make of it what you will.
Mineral is not a Christian band, but their lyrics are christian... Mineral purpose is not worship or something, it is just what comes from the inside.
"And I want to know the difference between What sparkles and what is gold
I wonder how many eyes Are fixed like a vulture's on me"
I guess this song is about hypocrisy. But I like to interpret these lines in a different way: a person found what's gold and then other persons look at him like vultures, because they don't have true gold in their lifes because of their selfishness and envy. These lines touch me so fundamentally...
By the way, anyone feels that Chris Simpson belongs to Catholic Church? "The humble and righteous and meek" - it's so Catholic...
