In regards to the meaning of this song:
Before a live performance on the EP Five Stories Falling, Geoff states “It’s about the last time I went to visit my grandmother in Columbus, and I saw that she was dying and it was the last time I was going to see her. It is about realizing how young you are, but how quickly you can go.”
That’s the thing about Geoff and his sublime poetry, you think it’s about one thing, but really it’s about something entirely different. But the lyrics are still universal and omnipresent, ubiquitous, even. So relatable. That’s one thing I love about this band. I also love their live performances, raw energy and Geoff’s beautiful, imperfectly perfect vocals. His voice soothes my aching soul.
And when my mom says she likes my clothes
I always have to get changed
And when my nan says my hair looks nice
It's based on a magazine page
And I'll ruin my body if I want to
Don't tell me how to dress; I didn't ask you
And I'll be a cute boy if I want to
Or I'll be a cute girl with ugly tattoos
And I'll ruin my body if I want to
Maybe I'll have a kid, maybe just two
And if my boy wants to be a girl
My girl will be so sweet
And if my girl wants to be a boy
I hope he's not discreet
If my boy wants to be a girl
I hope that she's so sweet
And I'll ruin my body if I want to
Don't tell me how to dress; I didn't ask you
And I'll be a cute boy if I want to
Or I'll be a cute girl with ugly tattoos
