Sharing secrets with another world
Rubbing shoulders with some unknown lovers
Making waves through the universe
Starting wars with anonymous brothers
Trip switch, trip switch
Make a wish and I'll count to three
Press the button and we'll both be happy
Sending signals is a dirty trick
I get my love in a digital package
Trip switch, trip switch

What we do when the power's out
What do we do when the lights go down?
What we do when the power's out
What do we do when the lights go?
Down, down, down, down, down, when the lights go
Down, down, down, down, down, lights go

Yeah, gimme data 'cause I need a hit
How I love stratospheric numbers
Information, I've been craving it
Gimme yours, then gimme all the others
Trip switch, trip switch

What we do when the power's out
What do we do when the lights go down?
What we do when the power's out
What do we do when the lights go?
Down, down, down, down, down, when the lights go
Down, down, down, down, down, when the lights go

They put out the lights, they put out the lights
They put out the lights

What we do when the power's out
What do we do when the lights go down?
What we do when the power's out
What do we do when the lights go?
Down, down, down, down, down
Hey, when the lights go

What we do when the power's out
What do we do when the lights go?
What we do when the power's out
What do we do when the lights go?
Down, down, down, down, down
Down, down, down, down, down, when the lights go down

    My Interpretation

To me, this song is a criticism of the so-called Internet Age.

Verse 1 & 2: We're willing to release any variety of information about ourselves online. We are willing to cultivate a sort of Internet-based sex life with complete strangers and we get into ferocious arguments with other strangers. We seek happiness with the press of a computer key, getting enjoyment from the little blurbs of information in the packets we get through our internet connections.

Verse 3: We're addicted to our data connections. Information is being beamed directly into our homes and into our phones and laptops when we're out. Just as we are willing to put our own information out there, we voraciously take in the information put out by everyone else.

Chorus: This seems to be posing an open question to the listener: what will we do if (or quite possibly when) the grid goes down and we can't satiate our electronic addiction?

    Question

So what do we do? How do we fix this?
