Blue Lyrics
But she used to be a friend of mine
Leading forward, but fell behind
Loneliness redefined
Happiness is all you know, but
I can't help but holding on, on
Quietly stuck in the moment, I'm not over you
I'll be forever lonely
Silence ain't golden, you know that it's only blue
It's only blue
Blue
Tried to take it back and change the night
Yeah, we used to set the dream alive
'Til the day it sunk and slowly died
Happiness is all you know, but
I can't help but holding on, on
Quietly stuck in the moment, I'm not over you
And I'll be forever lonely
Silence ain't golden, you know that it's only blue
It's only blue
Blue
It's only blue
“Blue” is a song about a love that is persisting in the discomfort of the person experiencing the emotion. Ed Sheeran reflects on love lost, and although he wishes his former partner find happiness, he cannot but admit his feelings are still very much there. He expresses the realization that he might never find another on this stringed instrumental by Aaron Dessner.

Ed Sheeran marked the end of his mathematical symbols music collection with “- (subtract)” earlier this year in May. In a surprising move, he announced a new project titled “Autumn Variations” while still on tour in support of the last project. The promised seventh studio album arrived on September 29 via Gingerbread Man Records, the label he founded in a partnership with Warner Music Group in 2015. No lead or promotional singles were released in support of “Autumn Variations,” although he did preview some of the songs during live performances. “Blue” is the fifth track on the tracklist, and it was written by Foy Vance and Ed Sheeran.
It hurts to bottle in feelings so maybe Ed Sheeran is right about silence not being so golden. The lyrical work on “Blue” is top notch but the performance is not quite as good. Hence, the song is probably one that would be skipped more time than replayed. I’ll score it 6/10.
