The other night I dreamt I was back in college
There were boys in robes and sandals
They were singing songs to Krishna
Burning candles they would trade for money
You agreed to buy one cause you felt guilty
One turned into Sr. Margaret
I said "If you can change your shape that easily
Can you take the form of my dead father?
Because I think he would've liked to meet my wife"
And I know for a fact he would have liked my wife

Then last night I was somewhere near Virginia
Rebuking satan with ironic faithfulness"
And satan turned to me: Have you thought much about that cry?

Eloi, Eloi
Have you thought much about that cry?
Have you thought much about that cry?
Have you thought much about that cry?
Have you thought much about that cry?
Have you thought much about that cry?

Eloi, Eloi
Eloi, Eloi
Lama sabachthani
Eloi, Eloi
Eloi, Eloi
Elliot Eloi Eloi

There is no way this is what he says

"Then last night I was in Maryland With the singing and praying band Joining in "Satan Get Behind Me" With ironic faithfulness And a man looked almost exactly like Elliot And Satan turned to me, "Have you thought much about that cry?""

I think it's pretty clearly: "Then last night I somewhere near Virginia Rebuking Satan With ironic faithfulness The Satan turned to me, "Have you thought much about that cry?""

    Song Fact

Aaron Weiss' response, in an interview for RS Russia, to the question: What’s your most unusual experience of writing a song?

“For a song called Dorothy (on our newest album) where a lot of our songs I’ve really had to slave over every word, and it’s meticulous of like trying to find the exact phrasing for each line.

"That song, Dorothy, came about almost effortlessly. It was literally just based on a dream that I had. And I woke up, and the dream fit almost exactly to the instrumentation that was already present.

"That was struggling beyond words with… well before the words to that song… I mean they couldn’t come up with anything. I thought this song they just is just not gonna make it. Because I have no way to connect to it, I don’t understand it musically. I don’t connect to it. So I was ready to just give up on it.

“And then I had a dream about my Dad and woke up and the words fit perfectly on to the song.

“So that was really a relief. Because the song turned out to be, if not the most important one, maybe right up there with the most important songs on the record. Or even that we’ve ever written.

“And it came about so effortlessly that I had a very fond memory of that one.

“I didn’t even feel like I wrote it. I just felt like it was breathing, in a sense, that was effortless.”

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.
