Slip away, your vanity is gone, I'm falling out of place
We all fall down, the pain goes on
We bear through the war and turn the lost away
We all fall down, the pain goes on

And I'll be the fire that dries the flood

As I fight for one last prayer, I keep holding on
No love to believe in
As I drag the Devil down, I will stand alone
No longer defeated

Stripped away, we rise above it all, forgotten and betrayed
We all fall down, the pain goes on
No better than before, still broken and afraid
We all fall down, the pain goes on

And I'll be the cloud that hides the sun

As I fight for one last prayer, I keep holding on
No love to believe in
As I drag the Devil down, I will stand alone
No longer defeated

I'm falling to pieces, (Pained and used)
I know what I needed, it's not you
It's not you

As I fight for one last prayer, I keep holding on
No love to believe in
As I drag the Devil down, I will stand alone
No longer defeated

No longer defeated
No longer defeated

This is clear cut. The person refuses to give in and give up. This person is willing to fight until his last breath. Mix Until the End, Into the Nothing, Failure, and Never Again and you get Defeated! What a way to end this album!! Before dawn of course!

    My Interpretation

Slip away, your vanity is gone, I'm falling out of place (I think he dated someone who was vain. She changed and she doesn’t find him attractive anymore. Usually vain people care more about the sex than the person inside. With her vanity gone, she no longer is attracted to him and moved on) We all fall down, the pain goes on (People feel broken every once and a while and they live through the pain) We bear through the war and turn the lost away (People sometimes look the other way when someone needs help) We all fall down, the pain goes on (They fall and the pain in continuous)

And I'll be the fire that dries the flood (He’ll be the one to make her tears go away. Or he’ll be the one to dry up his own flood of tears)

As I fight for one last prayer, I keep holding on (He’s holding on and fighting to get her back) No love to believe in (There’s no reason for him to believe that she still loves him) As I drag the Devil down, I will stand alone (He wrestles with his demons inside his mind. He fights alone) No longer defeated (but they won’t win)

Stripped away, we rise above it all, forgotten and betrayed (I think this is referring to them now. They both overcame a lot of bull crap. They were betrayed by people and forgotten) We all fall down, the pain goes on (Everyone takes a fall during their life and the pain is constant) No better than before, still broken and afraid (Even though they rose above it, they’re no better than before. They both are still broken people who have to deal with their fears) We all fall down, the pain goes on (It happens to everyone. The pain lives on)

And I'll be the cloud that hides the sun (He’ll be the darkness hiding the light. He’ll hide the truth from her if it means that she will take him back or love him)

    chorus- see above

I'm falling to pieces, (Pained and used) (he feels ripped to shreds. It was almost abusive. She abused him because she used him only for sex. “Pained and used” It’s very painful to him and he still feels like he wants her. He knows he was only used by her.) I know what I needed, it's not you (He needed love, not someone who was going to use him for sexual favors) It's not you (not her)

    (chorus) see above

No longer defeated No longer defeated (either he wins her back or he stops loving her “no longer defeated”)

And I'll be the fire that dries the flood> the lyricist is saying he will be the one to fix their problems, but he also says....

And I'll be the cloud that hides the sun> which is him saying I'm also going to be the one who causes you other unintentional problems, aside from your problems I'm fixing.

It reads like a bitter sweet song about love and struggles. He fell out of place in her life. There was some chemistry but they weren't right for each other. She was completely wrong for him.

"No love to believe in" > I interpret it as she doesn't care about him like she used to.

He recovers from what he was going through, alone, and wins in the end.

This song can mean anything really, just depending on whatever is going on in your life.

    Song Meaning

I believe this song is about a guy who goes on a killing spree. He's tired of being hurt and pushed around so he resorts to violence to become powerful. Yet at the same time he identifies with how painful and difficult life can be, as he says "we" like he is referring to all of humanity. He rises up and becomes evil enough to "drag the devil down," like he's so villainous he's deeper in Hell than the devil himself. He justifies his actions by saying he had no love in his life, only hate, and that's why he responded with hate. He says he doesn't need people because for his whole life he was striving for acceptance and then finally decided to take things into his own hands. He's "no longer defeated" because he sees everyday life as a war, a competition, and he wins because he has killed anyone who challenged him.

    Disturbing.

Light Up The Sky
Van Halen
The song lyrics were written by the band Van Halen, as they were asked to write a song for the 1979 movie "Over the Edge" starring Matt Dillon. The movie (and the lyrics, although more obliquely) are about bored, rebellious youth with nothing better to do than get into trouble. If you see the movie, these lyrics will make more sense. It's a great movie if you grew up in the 70s/80s you'll definitely remember some of these characters from your own life. Fun fact, after writing the song, Van Halen decided not to let the movie use it.

Fast Car
Tracy Chapman
"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him. There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

No Surprises
Radiohead
Same ideas expressed in Fitter, Happier are expressed in this song. We're told to strive for some sort of ideal life, which includes getting a good job, being kind to everyone, finding a partner, getting married, having a couple kids, living in a quiet neighborhood in a nice big house, etc. But in Fitter, Happier the narrator(?) realizes that it's incredibly robotic to live this life. People are being used by those in power "like a pig in a cage on antibiotics"--being pacified with things like new phones and cool gadgets and houses while being sucked dry. On No Surprises, the narrator is realizing how this life is killing him slowly. In the video, his helmet is slowly filling up with water, drowning him. But he's so complacent with it. This is a good summary of the song. This boring, "perfect" life foisted upon us by some higher powers (not spiritual, but political, economic, etc. politicians and businessmen, perhaps) is not the way to live. But there is seemingly no way out but death. He'd rather die peacefully right now than live in this cage. While our lives are often shielded, we're in our own protective bubbles, or protective helmets like the one Thom wears, if we look a little harder we can see all the corruption, lies, manipulation, etc. that is going on in the world, often run by huge yet nearly invisible organizations, corporations, and 'leaders'. It's a very hopeless song because it reflects real life.

Head > Heels
Ed Sheeran
“Head > Heels” is a track that aims to capture what it feels like to experience romance that exceeds expectations. Ed Sheeran dedicates his album outro to a lover who has blessed him with a unique experience that he seeks to describe through the song’s nuanced lyrics.
