I've got a friend with a melody that will kill
She will eat you alive
Like cyanide it's poison
She'll eat you alive
Don't you battle we'll kill you
We'll rip you up and tear you in two
Don't you battle we'll kill you
We'll rip you up and tear you in two
Don't you battle we'll kill you
We'll rip you up and tear you in two

Only in the sound of the voices I scream

I'm an angel don't tell me what I did
You saw me standin' on my own mountain
? not to put it longer
Tears are not worth their weight
Your love faded is over ?
Your another one in a long long time
Wrestling people for peace
Wrestling people for peace

Only in the sound of the voices I scream (x3)

I make room for everyone
I make room for everyone
I need to take a break

If you had to go where I was not looking out
It won't happen anymore but look what I found
I was always talking too much
Only in the sound of the voices I scream
Only in the sound of the voices I scream

I've always deemed this a feminist anthem. keep reading and challenge any assumptions such statements likely prompt, please The lyrics posted consistently contain several typos, first and foremost being "I've got a friend with a MALADY that will kill . . . " It's pretty clear why some may interpret multiple personality disorder from such an introductory statement, but honestly, who doesn't possess or contain within them multiple "personalities" i.e. facets or potentials of self? I feel from this song the expressing, if not a "healthier" means of releasing powerfully destructive and agro emotions. I deem it "feminist" mosty on the bases of: 1) all female ensemble (blatant), 2) the lyrics "I make room for everyone . . . I need to take a break," encompasses the typically "feminine" attributes of nurturing, caretaking and self-lessness, 3) "we'll kill you, rip you up and tear you in two" reflecting natural examples of vicious feminine brutality (notably amongst aracnids, mantis, lioness and Wuornos, to name a few). I feel this song emphasises having reached a "boiling point," primarily from a feminine perspective. "Sex" aside, everyone has a cap for the amount of shit they'll take, and ideally, expressing and addressing those tensions prior to reaching a full blow out, "keeps it healthy", while in the scope of our life experiences we are constantly "discovering" where those boundaries lie.

Schizophrenia and Dissociative identity disorder, hands down. There's two or more personalities going on here - take a look.

"I've got a friend with a melody that will kill She'll eat you alive Like cyanide is poison, she'll eat you alive" Personality one (P1), possibly the 'person' herself, speaking of P2, an agressive personality.

"Don't you battle, we'll kill you Rip you up and tear you in two" All personalities speaking to P1.

"Only in the sound of the voices I scream" Schizophrenia.

"I heard my name, now I'm gone, tell me what I did You saw me standing on my lone mountain Dare me to play, not to put it off 'Cause the tears are not worth the wait" Probably P1 after a personality switch, speaking of somebody totally different speaking to her about what 'she' has done, possibly as P2

"Your loveliness is so worth it You're another one in a long long time Wrestling people for peace" Either one of the personalities (P3) or the same totally different person speaking of or to 'her'.

"Only in the sound of the voices I scream"

"I make room for everyone I make room for everyone I need to take a break!" What do you think?

"Do you wanna look in my mind Open up and see what you find Holdin' on to just what I wanted Hiding like a force it was..." Still here. 'She' is just trying to keep it together.

"Just behind the door, when I wasn't not looking out For nothing anymore, but ooh look what I found I was always talking too much But only in the sound of the voices I scream"

"Only in the sound of the voices I scream"

A funny story about this song: When the band was writing this album they rented a house in Joshua Tree for several weeks. One night the cops showed up (the girls were super freaked bc they had a bong right out in the middle of the floor). The officer told them someone had made a noise complaint that the music the band was playing was making them actually nauseous and sick. So after the cop left the girls were like "well fuck yea this song is going on the album if it actually made someone sick!!"

Think it is a mistake to try to draw too concrete a meaning(s) out of this incredible song. The focus is heavily on its vibe/energy/rhythm... not on telling a coherent story or one reductive message. The words are definitely important. But what meanings there are would seem to be personal to the band members that composed each of the three different verses independently. Even the individual lines appear to break free of any singular theme.

But that's what makes it such a great meta-song for the band. What brings it all together is each member's shared focus on the collective sound-image and the self-reflective idea of the band itself. Brought together, the parts form one tone poem that describes the energy that Warpaint represents far better than any simple story or clever lyric ever could. All the words and verses reinforce that tone and vibe in some way.

Jenny described the song as being like their hip-hop style anthem. It is a sound manifesto. The words play on how insidious and addictive their music is and how they're not here to make you comfortable. Their tone pierces the skin and kills. They don't need to justify anything beyond their music... because that speaks aggressively for itself. They don't care who you are or what you're into... they'll poison you without prejudice.

The main chorus is an enigmatic reflection of that Warpaint sound in words.

Mountain Song
Jane's Addiction
Jane's Addiction vocalist Perry Farrell gives Adam Reader some heartfelt insight into Jane’s Addiction's hard rock manifesto "Mountain Song", which was the second single from their revolutionary album Nothing's Shocking. Mountain song was first recorded in 1986 and appeared on the soundtrack to the film Dudes starring Jon Cryer. The version on Nothing's Shocking was re-recorded in 1988. "'Mountain Song' was actually about... I hate to say it but... drugs. Climbing this mountain and getting as high as you can, and then coming down that mountain," reveals Farrell. "What it feels to descend from the mountain top... not easy at all. The ascension is tough but exhilarating. Getting down is... it's a real bummer. Drugs is not for everybody obviously. For me, I wanted to experience the heights, and the lows come along with it." "There's a part - 'Cash in now honey, cash in Miss Smith.' Miss Smith is my Mother; our last name was Smith. Cashing in when she cashed in her life. So... she decided that, to her... at that time, she was desperate. Life wasn't worth it for her, that was her opinion. Some people think, never take your life, and some people find that their life isn't worth living. She was in love with my Dad, and my Dad was not faithful to her, and it broke her heart. She was very desperate and she did something that I know she regrets."
