Someone to Hate

The concept behind the song is that I will gladly be someone to hate, if it’s for reasons pertaining to my beliefs. I’m comfortable being a target under those circumstances. I don’t like to sit on the fence, so the song is about standing my ground and taking whatever heat comes from that. - Ryan Clark

The "I" he uses in this song is just the personification of "The cry for the falling of time". In other words, the 'one to hate' is not a person. It's a "Figure for the falling of time". The war-like lyrics so prevelent throughout this song is most likely metaphorical, not a literal war with "storms of lead" and "weapons washed in blood", but instead a metaphorical war that will come with the ending of time, when the Lord comes back and proves to the world that he is the way, truth, and light. This entire song is like a letter from "the cry for the falling of time" to the "Advocates of Hell" saying basically that the time for your deceptive reign is reaching it's end, and when that end comes, there will be no opposition. The last four lines I actually had help interpreting because they stumped me, but in the end we interpreted them to mean that we were all born in sin, but we were all given the knowledge of good and evil. I think its about fighting for your beliefs in Jesus. The song speaks of spitting on the idols of false gods and that the enemies time is up and your going out to kill them. This is all spiritually though or could be physically. I think of the crusades some times hearing this song. People will hate you, everyone who isn't a Christian, but you will carry on fighting the enemies of Jesus. "Born into the lust within our eyes Taught to write the scriptures for our lives We inherit the lies" Sounds like some sort of Mormonism thing to me idk. They are born into believing this false branch of Christianity. Forced to fallow along or be banished, so they inherit the lies. So except for that last part I think its pretty much saying to stand up for your beliefs and fight the enemies of Christ, even though you'll take some heat for doing it.

These are pretty biblical lyrics that seem to relate with the bible's revelation. It states fairly clearly it's about someone who is proud to be "someone to hate" because they stand for their faith and don't give into evil and false idols. It also seems to say they will preach their faith to others no matter what, even with constant persecution. The verse where they say "I will carry the weight" reflects this nicely, since many Christians say they will "carry the weight" like how Jesus carried the weight of the cross.

"I will carry my decree into a storm of lead" seems to say that they will preach their faith even in a "storm of lead", which is commonly a metaphor for a battlefield or storm of bullets firing. In violent areas of the Middle East Christians can easily get shot for their faith.

"All you advocates of Hell, you corruptors of free will The culling is nigh, better get your fill"

This one seems to be significant in the meaning of the song since it says people who enjoy or are advocates of sin will endure the horrors of "the culling". "Culling" means to select a large population of people, or to reduce a population by slaughtering them. This relates to the tribulation in the bible where most of the population of Earth (the population that is not raptured) will suffer and be slaughtered.

Looking at the line "I am someone to hate." who is "I Am."? Jesus is. Jesus is popularly portrayed as a a warm fuzzy icon of progressive tolerance. He is not. This Jesus is the one who will charge Megiddo valley and single-handedly slaughter so many millions of people the valley will flow with blood up to a horses neck. So His weapons are indeed washed in blood as he carries his decree of final judgement into a storm of lead. The lead, btw, matters not to the one who has conquered death. This also explains the first verse. Jesus is not only a figure for the closing of time, but he is also the divine antagonist to sin and deceit. Jesus is not some precious moments hippie, Jesus is a warrior who went to the cross to fight his enemy, one we had no hope of defeating. He went as our champion. Read the description of Jesus given in Revelation 1. Does that sound like a tree hugging, soft spoken, overly tolerant guy? Or does that sound like a patient warrior ready to unleash wrath on His enemies? Tolkien had it right, Jesus is Aslan, a wild and powerful lion who will devour the enemy. This song is about the real Jesus.
