Medicine Lyrics

Pick it up, pick it all up.
And start again.
You've got a second chance,
You could go home.
Escape it all.
It's just irrelevant.

It's just medicine.
It's just medicine.

You could still be,
What you want to,
What you said you were,
When I met you.

You've got a warm heart,
You've got a beautiful brain.
But it's disintegrating,
From all the medicine.
From all the medicine.
From all the medicine.
Medicine.

You could still be,
What you want to be,
What you said you were,
When you met me.

You could still be,
What you want to.
What you said you were,
When I met you.
When you met me.
When I met you.

maybe i'm reading too much of my own situation into this, but it always seemed to me like this song was about anti-depressants.

a warm heart & beautiful brain, but they're disintegrating from all the medicine. one of the main side-effects of anti-depressants can be feeling emotionally numb, and feeling like yr not quite as sharp, mentally.

I definitely get this same feeling.

This song is clearly using the term "Medicine" as any unhealthy way of coping with an issue. Be it physical, emotional, or mental. This song is to remind you that whether or not how destroyed you are that it is just medicine. The real pain of the issue usually does much less damage then what we do to ourselves to escape the problem. Reminding us we're human beings with a solid heart, brain, and potential. That the dreams we make are attainable with a clear head, that underneath all the problems we've had pressed on us by others and ourselves there is still a beautiful soul just waiting for a little recognition.

Er... I believe these are the correct lyrics:

Pick it up, pick it all up. And start again. You've got a second chance, You could go home. Escape it all. It's just irrelevant.

It's just medicine. It's just medicine.

You could still be, What you want to, What you said you were When I met you. You've got a warm heart, You've got a beautiful brain, But it's disintegrating From all the medicine. From all the medicine. From all the medicine. Medicine.

You could still be, What you want to be, What you said you were, When you met me.

You could still be, What you want to, What you said you were, When I met you, When you met me, When I met you.

Ooh, ooh, ooh... Medicine, ooh, ahh..

Lyric Correction

Yeah, they are what I submitted but songmeanings obviously has some automated thing and has just decided to submit the lyrics to a totally different song. :/ Good job. They've done it with a few other daughter songs too.

I don't want to sound to messed up saying this but idk this song could be about suicide.

"Pick it up, pick it all up. And start again. You've got a second chance, You could go home. Escape it all. It's just irrelevant."

This is right before he is about to kill himself, he's thinking he does have another option, he can go home, he has a second chance, he can start again.

"It's just medicine. It's just medicine."

That's him just thinking to himself. He has decided he is going to kill himself, he is going to take all the panadol in front of him and overdose. And hey, after all, it is just medicine.

"You could still be, What you want to, What you said you were When I met you."

He's taken all of the panadol now. It would take a day or so for all the paracetamol to be taken up by his body, and for the effects to be irreversible before he dies. However he still has the chance to save himself. He could go to hospital and get his stomach pumped or get all the panadol removed before it breaks down. The guy still has a chance to be who he always wanted to be, to be who he was when he met her.

"You've got a warm heart, You've got a beautiful brain, But it's disintegrating From all the medicine. From all the medicine. From all the medicine. Medicine."

It's sad because this guy was really sweet and caring and had a beautiful personality. He had so much potential and hope in his life ahead of him. But that's all slowly fading as the panadol starts working inside his body and it becomes too late to turn back.

My Interpretation

@Tybrah I agree with you, but I perceive the word "medicine" as an analogyn of like therapy and good affirmations from people. Like "It's just medicine" would mean that what the people are telling you is lies to try and make you feel better.

@Tybrah I am with you. You got this thing said so right. I was just listening this song at lake and thinking about suicide, how it won't gonna effect anything in the world, especially when I'm not too much sad when I'm dying. You are right.

This is a sweet song. And as sweet and lovely as it is, it is definitely, clearly about drug addiction. In case there was any doubt, the line about brain disintegrating (not emotional numbness, as caused by anti-depressants) I think makes it crystal.

I don't even think she is necessarily involved with this person...the intent behind this song is too benevolent for that. How many lovers urge their lover to leave and go home (not come home but go home) ? I think this is just a friend, just someone she loves who is incredibly disappointed in how things have turned out.

My Interpretation

I think that is reading VERY far into it.

It could be cough syrup (codeine or dextromethorphan), as those disintegrate the brain.

@HearDat 100% and I'm surprised this isn't the most upvoted take. Seems completely obvious to me, but maybe it's not as clear if you've never been through addiction or known someone who has.

I think this song is also about trying to escape something. But i do not think any of us knows exactly what the medicine is. It could be physical, like alcohol or drugs, or mental, like a feeling of depression. However, I think this ambiguity was purposeful by daughter so that we could all relate. Either way, this is my interpretation.

"Pick it up, Pick it all up. And start again." -I think this part is talking about the person having just commited whatever act is their "Medicine", and this person is feelingtired and depressed and cannot escape this loop of using the medicine, feeling better, then feeling worse again and wanting more.

"You've got a second chance, you could go home. Escape it all, it's just irrelevant. It's just medicine." -I think this part is the singer talking to the user of the medicine and saying he should go home and reconnect with his roots, and escape this problem.

"You could still be, what you want to, what you said you were. When I met you." -I think the user of the medicine declined her offer, but this is the singer trying to convince them. Saying that they could have a bright future, and have success.

"You've got a warm heart, You've got a beautiful brain, But it's disintegrating." -This is her still trying to convince him, saying that the person still has so much opportunity to be great, but if the person doesn't seize the opportunity now, he will disintegrate(be stuck like this forever).

Then the rest is just repeats of what was already said.

My Interpretation

@RemyCiel this is exactly what I got from it

It's been too many years since she has been in love. She knows him better than he knows himself. He could pick it up and start over with her, but it's irrelevant to him. His Medicine may be literal(drugs alcohol pills) But i think she means his demons- his habits. He strays from what he knows will cure him which is her love & chases after his demons. Just a thought.

My Interpretation

That's how I thought of it. It's like she's watching his heart control him and break himself apart though he's such wonderful person to her.

Beautiful song!

Sounds like she's singing to a friend or loved one who has problem with alcohol. Someone who's down on life and feels like they can't get anywhere so they take in their "medicine" to feel better. And she's telling them they don't need the booze to be beautiful and a wonderful person because they are that without the alcohol.

Cover art for Medicine lyrics by Daughter

I like how medicine could just be a euphemism for whatever a person thinks will help them when they feel as if they are desperate (running away from your problems, self harming, drinking..taking drugs...so on)

BEAUTIFUL SONG/SINGING
